Droid Bionic Not Released Before Tiered Data Plans!

Ok so I don't know where to post this, I've looked. Anywayz since getting to know you all through this forum, and trusting you all in this one, decided to ask you all. I have a family plan 1400 min and we got that deal that only lasts for a year on unlimited data for $10 a piece (we get $20 credit for each our two phones) well apparantly that ends Jan. of 2012. So for 1400 min, unlimited text, and unlimited data we pay 140.00 plus taxes of course. Well when our plan expires it'll go up $40 bucks. I was wondering if there are and apps that can replace our texting that can do pics, video, and regular texts so we can drop the unlimited texting and come out close to what we pay now. Just don't want overages, and it to be a pain in the arse for friends to text us. Any suggestions?
I need to do this before tiered so to get my husband unlimited data and not screw mine up.
Thanks ahead o time.

P.S. we don't use a lot of texting but we might now that we have android! Yay

Look into Google Talk. It'll do chatting and I believe has video now. And that is over data, not texting.

I know about google talk, I thought it didn't do video and pics, and can I text to others from google talk?

Where can I get more info about this. I read a post about it. I'll look more into this, if anyone else has other apps let me know thanks!:)

I've only used Google Talk for chatting. I had only heard about videos. So don't know for sure. You can chat with others with Google Talk, not text. But if whomever you text also has Google Talk, it amounts to the basically the same thing. For some reason, I was under the impression that most of the people you text'd had Google Talk. Of course, if they don't, then you're stuck with texting AFAIK.

Sux! Yeah not all have smartphones, guess I could drop to lowest tier messaging for both phones and use goole for those that do have it? Smartphone plans are really expensive!
Thnx

Much as I wish to, I cannot wait for the Bionic. My original Droid broke two weeks out of warranty. Verizon and Motorola refused to fix it for less than $200, demanding I purchase a new phone at full price. Consequently, I refused, and no longer have a data plan.

Fortunately, the Charge looks to be a solid phone. Certainly more than the Xperia Play, which is somewhat crippled by its lack of horsepower and memory. If the Bionic shows up on July 4, great. Otherwise, it's off to Samsung. Probably a wise choice to be honest, since so many of Motorola's phones had faulty touchscreens.

If that July 28th date is correct, it's even more annoying. My "new every two" date is July 27. I suppose I could sign up for a data plan now, and eat the first month to stay on unlimited.

To those who think 2 Gb is enough, it is *if* you don't use Netflix or similar video services, and if you do most of your Marketplace purchases through WiFi. If not, just one movie, or downloading one of EA's huge games, will eat the majority of your quota.

Check out Google Voice. I use that for texting. It sadly isn't able to send video or pics, but its free, and that is what I cared about. It's free, goes through your data, and you get to choose your own number.

I suggest this to everyone in your predicament, Buy a used BlackBerry Curve on eBay for $40 now and get back on the data plan. Then wait for your NE2 and use it on the Bionic then.

Thought now it is getting close to 7/8 so you may want to do it quick and spring for next day shipping.

pretty sure the blackberry plan is seperate from the smartphone plan and will not lock you in.

Source please? I switched from BB Tour to DX without anything changing, pretty sure data is data to the VZW computers now.

maybe im wrong but i certainly remember reading that the blackberry plan is different from the smartphone data.

that could have changed now though.

If this quote from syracuse.com is correct, grandfathered data plans won't matter much, as they expire upon contract renewal.

Verizon says more details will be announced in July, but existing customers with unlimited data will still be able to keep their plans. The tiered pricing will only apply to new subscribers and customers renewing after July 7.

Vzw said existing customers with unlimited will be grandfathered even when upgrading.

Does anyone know the difference between a, "renewal," and an, "upgrade?"

I think the difference is that a renewal would be for people that are running verizon now, not under contract, but would be signing a new contract after the 7th. Upgrades are only for people that are still in contract, I believe.

Someone used the example of someone being out of contract on verizon, or just having a month to month, but still having unlimited with a 3G phone, and Verizon wouldn't allow you to keep unlimited if you decided to upgrade after the 7th.

This is the first time I have heard that Renewing will force you into tiered data plans. THAT Concerns me a great deal. Everything we have been told has lead us to believe that if you are an existing customer and have unlimited 3G now, that when you "upgrade" your phone to lets say the Bionic on August 4th, you would keep your unlimited data. But heres the deal, when you "upgrade" your phone you are signing or "renewing" your current contract for an additional 2 years... So what is the Truth??????

I currently have the OG Droid, unlimited Data plan. My contract expires on November 7th 2011, my last NE2 is active on July 7th, On August 4th I want to "upgrade" to the Bionic, I am still under contract... But I will be "renewing" my contract for an additional 2 years. Am I grandfathered, or will I get "Tiered"???

Now I am concerned again...

renewal would be when your contract ends and you sign a new one without changing anything...keep your same phone and plan, just renewing the contract.
Upgrade would be some kind of change-going from regular phone to smartphone, 3g to 4g, Old smartphone to new smatphone. That kind of thing.

Not anymore. When I went to take my charge back and restart my Storm 2 last week my friend at VZ told me they took out the distinction in their systems a few weeks ago so it is Solely smartphone data with no difference between smartphones. I was origionally told too that there was a distinction but not anymore.
