No my main line is an SGII which is currently running GB 2.3.4, the phone I'm attempting this on is the original Epic 4G.

Before attempting this update I was showing Firmware verion 2.2.1 Build number Froyo.DK28.

Thats your problem.. DK28 was an unofficial build (Leak)..

You will need to Odin to Froyo EC05 and then you can apply the update.

See instruction for this in the OP of this thread.

Thanks. Just to clarify, I always save my contacts to "PHONE". Will they still be saved/come back after I restore?

I had my Epic synced with my gmail, and it always downloaded my emails.

That could be a problem....

You may indeed loose your contacts if something goes wrong unless you synced them every once in a while to your Gmail...

If you goto your Gmail account online via computer/web does it have most/all of your contacts?

FYI, in the future make sure your contacts are saved to Google/Gmail... Then they will be on your phone and also safe on your Gmail account.

Paul627g - your patience with us users and wisdom regarding our Epic 4G's is immensely appreciated!

I'll be attempting my update tonight when I get home from work. I'm hoping for smooth sailing, but from reading through this thread I know that may not happen! If it doesn't, I know exactly where to find help!

Thanks again!

No problem... Yep its one of those 50/50 deals... I can't really say this is Samsungs/Sprint's fault.. I think its just an issue where for some reason the update regardless of manual or OTA is not properly clearing out the device during the update and leaving some garbage behind causing the boot looping conflict...

Just make sure your contacts/gmail/calendar are synced with your GMail before attempting.

Thanks for the help, I'll post again with an update after following the instructions.

Okay everyone, just wanted to share a quick summary of what happened.

I did the manual update, and my phone got stuck in a boot loop. Thanks to Paul627g I was advised to do a factory reset, which did fix my phone.

At first sight, I realized that I lost all of my contacts. Though, after 10 minutes of adding my gmail account, my contacts were synced back (magically) and I have the most important things back.

Overall, GB is really nice and fast. I love the new UI designs and it is very smooth and fluent. Everything seems to be working find, and I'm enjoying it very much!

+1 to Sprint, Samsung, and the people who helped me :).

I've flashed quite a few ROMs, so I've got everything saved to my Google account so I don't have to worry about it.

I'll post again after I attempt my update.

Thanks!

I'm going to go ahead with the manual update. The 50/50 chance of something going wrong isn't very promising, but hopefully it goes without any problems. I'm not familiar with the use of the recovery software.

Anyways, before I started, I wanted to verify file size information. The file I downloaded from the link on the main AC site was approximately 80MB zipped. Now the same file size is down to 9.5MB zipped. Just want to make sure that there should be a difference in file size before applying the update to the phone.

File I have (same as AC main page) is 84,472 KB.

As long as you downloaded it from AC main page or this thread you should be fine....

Don't extract it, or anything just follow the instructions.

This is not working out. I've turned the phone off, and then held down the volume switch (left side of the phone) and have also pressed and held the camera button while pushing the power button. I've done this three times now, and each time the phone just turns on as normal. What is the trick to pushing all three of these buttons at the same time?

Edit: Finally got it to work on the fourth attempt. I have a menu up on the screen with one of the options being "apply update.zip now?" I assume that I want to select this -- the directions seemed to indicate that the update would launch automatically.

Yes that is correct...

Apply update.zip (press HOME key) to select.

Good luck.

How do you sync your contacts to your Gmail account? I've been saving most of my contacts to the phone.

Should be an option in the contacts.. Probably something from the Menu key... About saving contacts to either Phone/Google.

Sorry been awhile since I've had my Epic 4g and I can't quite remember...

Check your Gmail/Google account online via web/computer and see if it the number of contacts on your Gmail/Google account matches the phone... This is another way to see if things are updated...

I got the update to work, but had to try a second time. Somehow the first update.zip file I downloaded didn't get saved with the correct size.

Not really seeing much that's new. The one thing I had hoped would be fixed but wasn't is the lock screen. I can lock the phone and slide the keyboard and the phone unlocks. I don't have an unlock code or pattern set, but I wonder if the phone were to be locked in this manner and I slide the keyboard if the phone would completely unlock.

Its more of a "behind the scenes" update... There are some visual aspects like the Gingerbread Green in many of the icons and pop up notifications..

Some changes here and there.... But some of the best stuff is behind the scenes like device optimized to perform better/faster. Which has already been noted by many users.

@all...

I'm gonna put the laptop down for a while... I've been supporting this since about 7 am this morning when all the fun started...

Read the thread, search, and re read the OP in this thread for help, tips and you should be fine...

Best of luck and enjoy your official Gingerbread everyone. I wish I still had my Epic 4g to check it out, but then again I do have my wife's Epic to go flash! LOL...

Paul.
