Agreed, removing the sd card has always helped me with odin.

I downloaded a file explorer app (file manager) downloaded the filefrom the android central link, moved it to the root of the sd, renamed, popped in a fullcharged battery and power on with the3finger salute.

Paul, all your persistence and troubleshooting is always appreciated... Thanks for all thethread support!

Ive been running this since noon pst, and have had Zero Issues. Sad it took over 13 months for us to have a working software build for this device.... But without root, i actually have a phone that works... Or so it seems. Will wait for a week or so before i flash my wifes epic. Just to be safe.

I've read through ten pages of the thread so far and haven't seen any of these issues addressed.

For those of you on GB have you seen any improvement in: keyboard lag, GPS issues, WiFi issues?

Did they revert the phone log so it doesn't show text messages anymore, like was under eclair?

Can apps take screenshots without rooting? This was possible in eclair but froyo broke it.

These are my biggest gripes. If those aren't improved I don't have much to look forward to in GB. I don't want more features I want things fixed.

Well as you can imagine....

KB lag many say is reduce or gone..
GPS I see they have the GPS hack going at XDA so I would so its the same as Froyo/Eclair... Either yours works or it doesn't...
Screenshots was removed in Froyo and continues in GB, returns in ICS...
Call log also has the hack returned for rooted users....

It is what it is... I'm not sure if these are really considered intentional "changed: items now in GB or considered broken... Only Google and Sammy/Sprint know the answer...

I downloaded the file using just the phone and renamed it, etc, but the hash wouldn't verify so it wouldn't install. It happened to a few other people in this thread. When I got home, I downloaded it to my PC and transferred it to my phone using ES explorer.

Powered down, powered back up using the three finger salute and it updated. No problem.

First thing I noticed was that the battery indicator, GPS, and network icons were different. Looks like my wife's Galaxy S2 now. Don't know if we got "ECO" mode or not. Didn't find that. The voice recognition seems to work better. Before I had to talk like a robot to get it to understand me and now I can speak a bit more conversationally.

Still can't update PRL, firmware or profile. It tried to check for updates to firmware as soon as it booted but it failed.

It also installed another qik video that is listed in applications.

Best thing I noticed about it:

Either the battery lasts longer or the indicator is re-assuringly inaccurate. I really don't care either way. The battery would be below 50% by lunchtime and cause me stress. This thing seems to be making alot better use of juice. Or at least the indicator is skewed to make me feel like it does - which is ok with me.

Thanks for sharing all the good info. I joined this forums specifically to find out about GB. There is alot of good info here.

A few things:
1: thanks for all the links and instructions. Worked like a charm, took 7 minutes from download to playing with GB on the phone.
I like that you can roll from last page to first and last to first on apps and home screens in touch wiz now.

2: if you don't know how to work with file extensions in windows or your mac, you shouldn't be rooting or manually updating anything.

3: Anyone that doesn't have their contacts synced with gmail or yahoo or exchange or what ever... WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!? seriously, did you miss the last 6-7 years of smartphone development? These aren't locally synced palm pads. That shouldn't even be on the OP, if it's not it's your own fault.

This is true, but some people believe it or not simply still "use" these phones and really don't get into all the configurations and options. Some don't care to and others have no idea how they just all know its marketed as a premier device and a great phone.

So rather than have people running into problems its easier to just post a heads up on the OP..

Thanks for the input Funky Cricket, glad to see everything worked out for you on the update.

My E4G is no longer my primary phone so I can't comment about SMS- or phone-related issues.

Had no issues using Odin to go back to stock EC05. Downloaded the update from Paul627g's shared resources (thanks, Paul! Google's site was VERY slow). Transfered to the SD card and updated using recovery without any issues.

Overall: Stock 2.3.5 is about as fast as stock Froyo. I really don't like Touchwiz, so I am biased in terms of appearance. The new voicemail icon is cheesy. Everything else looks about the same. Has the characteristic GB faded gradient when you try scrolling beyond the limits of a page.

Here's what I notice on my device:
1. GPS: not locking on. My NS4G does it in <5 seconds and it is accurate. I don't know if having Sprint service is necessary for GPS, but in my house, the E4G wouldn't lock.
2. Rotation Lag: appears to be fixed and appears faster than my NS4G.
3. Battery: Definitely longer. I had both my NS4G and E4G devices on airplane mode with screen 100% without time out. E4G drained faster than my NS4G. I then had my E4G on wifi with screen off from 9pm until 7am and the battery drained from 55% to 47%. Not bad.
4. Camera button: still takes a few seconds to load the camera. (I really miss this camera after having gone to the NS4G.)
5. Launcher: Strangely, I was unable to change to any other launchers. It would always switch back to TW. I can't recall if root was necessary, but it would use the new launcher for a little while and then switch back to TW without prompting me and even if I had selected the other launcher as default. This is strange since it allowed me to install and use the Android keyboard instead of the Samsung keyboard.
6. Look and feel: Basically no different from stock Froyo other than green icons in notification bar which are characteristic of GB.
7. Will probably root it later today. Really don't have any compelling reasons to install a ROM since it is a backup phone for now.

i downloaded this, changed it to update.zip.. rebooted phone while holdin down and camera..and im at the Clockwork Mod Recovery 2.5.1 screen (green text) and no matter what i choose, it goes to a black screen and when i press the Home button again the same screen reappears.

Must be on STOCK NOT ROOTED....

You have old CWM 2.5.1 installed which is rooted. You will have to Odin to stock EC05 Froyo.. See OP in this thread for instructions...

I was in the same situation. In this scenario I believe I used the Epic's "power" button (it became the "go do it now" button) rather than "home". And then it performed the install from the update.zip file.

I'm having trouble with this.

I have stock EC05 Froyo, but I have ClockworkMod v.2.5.1.0. (green screen)

I tried rooting my phone many times with oneclick, but it always failed.

I got EC05 OTA, but I can't remember if I tried rooting AFTER that or not.

What version of ClockworkMod should I have, if that is the issue?

If I have to use Odin to change ClockworkMod, will it wipe my data?

At first, I was using directions on the main site, which I think were less fleshed out. I was unplugging before ejecting and dismounting. Many times since then I have either deleted update.zip from my SD card or copied over and replaced earlier attempts. I check update.zip's properties in Windows 7, and see the file name as update.zip. The first few times I tried, I named it with .zip, so it was update.zip.zip, but I have tried many times now with the correct name.

I boot into ClockworkMod v.2.5.1.0, and scroll down to "apply sdcard:update.zip, and hit the Home button, and the screen goes black, with the red power light on and the 4 capacitive buttons lit. If I hit home again, it takes me back to the main ClockworkMod screen with "apply sdcard:update.zip" selected. If I open the phone and hit the Enter/Return key, scroll down to "Yes - Instal /sdcard/update.zop" and hit Enter/Return, I get the following error:

Install from sdcard…

Opening update package…

Assert failed: apply_patch_check(“/system/bin/recovery”,”f729fa2bfefbcd4ccc31428ad35078d910bbaa369”, “1c924ddea21616379d7c7ac4445eb2e54e5b11d”)
E:Error in /scdard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.

Please let me know if I need to do something different.

Thanks.

You will need to Odin back to stock unrooted Froyo EC05. Make your backups with titanium or my back up root both available from the. market because Odin will erase everything except your sdcard. You can either choose not to save your data or root again afterwards to restore your data

I have stock EC05, and every attempt I made at rooting with oneclickroot failed. Does my version of Clockworkmod mean I actually AM rooted?

If you have ClockWorkMod installed as recovery then your rooted :)

Two options...

Stay rooted and choose a custom ROM, stock/modified to flash see the link below...

Odin back to stock Froyo EC05 unrooted and receive the OTA or manual update.
Procedure #1, [How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

Sorry, I thought I edited the above. I was able to install Titanium and back up my data, so obviously I WAS rooted. Thanks for your help.

OK Did I brick my phone permanently? It looked like Odin froze. I waited a while. I took out my battery. closed odin. now I have a symbol that has a phone and a computer with a warning sign in the middle. an orange triangle with an exclamation point. I booted into Download mode, and Odin will not detect my phone. I redownloaded the Samsung driver.

Okay your still good at this point...

Relax...

You maybe one of those who have problems with the Froyo EC05 Odin package...

[TIP]Let me add, reboot your computer before using Odin again to clear everything out. [/TIP]

1. Download Procedure #2 from [How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

2. Pull your battery out and leave it out... Then connect up via USB cable to your computer and try to boot into Download Mode (Hold 1 on physical KB and Power).

3. If you get into Odin and it recognizes your device you should be good.

4. Run the Odin process using the Froyo EB13 Odin tar that I instructed in step #1.

5. Once you get a pass, disconnect and pop your battery back in and boot up.

6. After about 5-10 minutes you should receive the OTA update to Froyo EC05. Then from there you can update manually using the instructions in the OP of this thread.

Sorry for the inconvenience, it happens to some users with the EC05 Odin package.

Please report back and let us know how things are going.

Good luck.

I'm sorry for all these posts...

With the USB cable installed and the battery out, my phone does nothing. I can't get into download mode.

With the battery back in, I can get into download mode, but Odin is not detecting my phone. It did before. I have reinstalled the Samsung driver from their website again, which got my phone detected earlier today, but not now.

Hopefully the fact that I can even get to download mode is a good thing?

I turn my phone on or boot into ClockworkMod. When I try, I keep getting that phone - warning - computer picture.
