Evo 4G update to Froyo OFFICIAL August 3rd (OLD)

Can someone host that file? All the HTC links are toast.

*edit* never mind.

Update: HTC just shot us a message to clarify that this is not the final ROM version and that the company is strongly recommending not to install this. Additionally, a request has been put in to remove the file from the server, so if you still want to try at your own risk, better download now while it's still available.

The instructions are pretty simple, problem is the adrenalin that's messing with the brain and sight.

BEFORE YOU START PLEASE SCREAM SERENITY NOW, THEN PROCEED

Get out the big chunky crayons and the Red Chief tablet... here we go.

Here are more complete instructions for those who need to have a picture drawn for them, like myself. :)

1. Download the file from the link given. Once downloaded, use a file mover to copy file to SD card and rename to update.zip
(I used Astro to long hold on the .zip file and select "MOVE", then it puts the file in "cut" mode, and will wait for you to find the SDCARD folder and then tap inside the folder and select "PASTE". Some have advised that you rename the file as well, to update.zip - be sure you don't name it update.zip.zip)
2. Shutdown Phone - hold the power button, select SHUT DOWN
3. Hold Down Power and Volume Down button
4. Wait for screen to to load up and it to do it's searching for file thing.
- at this point a screen will come up with three little Androids at the bottom and 4 options.
5. You need to use the volume button to rock down to RECOVERY. For those of you who don't read, like me.
6. Once you get to picture of phone with red exclamation mark hold Volume Up and then press Power.
7. At this point, I had a black screen with 4 options. I believe the actual text said "recover from update.zip"
8. Currently I am at this stage and the screen is black with bright yellow text starting with "--Install from sdcard...." then

(above takes 3-4 minutes)

Reboot via menu to complete installation.
After I did this, I got this message:

Writing zip image...
(approx 2 minutes)

Now I have a screen with two green arrows in a circle and a downward arrow above an image of the device which has shown up and gone black several times.
(approx 5 minutes)

HTC EVO 4G reboot screen - several times
(approx 1-2 minutes)

Phone is rebooting with Sprint sound/logo 4g - (phone is plugged into power and is a bit warm, it's hanging on this screen for longer than usual, but I'm typing this, so I'm distracting myself from freaking out. :)

Congratulations! Your phone has been updated successfully to version 3.26.651.3 (with my live wallpaper and time, date, carrier in the background until you click "OK") Once you click "OK" it will go to an HTC screen with a percentage in the center and once that finishes you get a little keyboard tutorial. I skipped it and now I have another "loading" screen. Slowly, all of my widgets and icons are loading on the home screen. I think I'm done!

I hope this helps some of you who are timid about updating - I know I am very intimidated by messing with my phone's system. I don't flash ROM's because I prefer to stick with my carrier's updates because of past issues with Palm, Windows Mobile and Blackberry. Android just seems to be easier in every single aspect, including this one, which is why I went ahead and gave it a try.

After reading the STRONG recommendation against updating, I think I need some Pepto.

Mine seemed to reboot or restart a dozen times. Did that for maybe 10 minutes before it stopped.

I was a bit nervous but resisted the urge to pull the battery and all is fine now. :)

So...Camera does the 4 way turn.
Flashlight is under apps
Ran the linkpack and got around 34-36 in 4 test.
