Evo 4G update to Froyo OFFICIAL August 3rd (OLD)

Can somebody give me the REAL directions to install it? I followed the really long set of directions the guy posted and it said it failed. Please help. Thanks! Is it necessary to rename it? Which file do I rename? I renamed the file that says OTA SuperSonic 3.26 and all the other numbers

Are you the one that posted that you had changed some settings in your browser?

yes i had at some point changed some settings in the browser to get flash to work on the previous version of android. i dont remember what was changed. there was something that had to be entered in the address bar to make some additional settings available...

i reset the browser to defaults (not sure if that affects the "advanced" settings as i cant remember how to get to them, and cant seem to find it on google)... no luck

I would assume that previous settings wouldn't have been saved, but I don't know - I have never changed anything in my browser - maybe setting it back to default is causing your problem?

Seeing as this is not the official update will we be able to update on Tuesday and overwrite this with the official release with no problems?

The directions below were PERFECT. It literally just finished as I saw your post. Can't get any better directions than this...

Here are more complete instructions for those who need to have a picture drawn for them, like myself. :)

1. Download the file from the link given. Once downloaded, use a file mover to copy file to SD card and rename to update.zip
(I used Astro to long hold on the .zip file and select "MOVE", then it puts the file in "cut" mode, and will wait for you to find the SDCARD folder and then tap inside the folder and select "PASTE". Some have advised that you rename the file as well, to update.zip - be sure you don't name it update.zip.zip)
2. Shutdown Phone - hold the power button, select SHUT DOWN
3. Hold Down Power and Volume Down button
4. Wait for screen to to load up and it to do it's searching for file thing.
- at this point a screen will come up with three little Androids at the bottom and 4 options.
5. You need to use the volume button to rock down to RECOVERY. For those of you who don't read, like me.
6. Once you get to picture of phone with red exclamation mark hold Volume Up and then press Power.
7. At this point, I had a black screen with 4 options. I believe the actual text said "recover from update.zip"
8. Currently I am at this stage and the screen is black with bright yellow text starting with "--Install from sdcard...." then
Finding...
Opening...
Verifying...
Installing...
Verifying current...
Removing unneeded files...
Patching....
Unpacking new files...
Symlinks and permissions...
(above takes 3-4 minutes)

Reboot via menu to complete installation.
After I did this, I got this message:

Writing zip image...
(approx 2 minutes)

Now I have a screen with two green arrows in a circle and a downward arrow above an image of the device which has shown up and gone black several times.
(approx 5 minutes)

HTC EVO 4G reboot screen - several times
(approx 1-2 minutes)

Phone is rebooting with Sprint sound/logo 4g - (phone is plugged into power and is a bit warm, it's hanging on this screen for longer than usual, but I'm typing this, so I'm distracting myself from freaking out. :)

Congratulations! Your phone has been updated successfully to version 3.26.651.3 (with my live wallpaper and time, date, carrier in the background until you click "OK") Once you click "OK" it will go to an HTC screen with a percentage in the center and once that finishes you get a little keyboard tutorial. I skipped it and now I have another "loading" screen. Slowly, all of my widgets and icons are loading on the home screen. I think I'm done!

I hope this helps some of you who are timid about updating - I know I am very intimidated by messing with my phone's system. I don't flash ROM's because I prefer to stick with my carrier's updates because of past issues with Palm, Windows Mobile and Blackberry. Android just seems to be easier in every single aspect, including this one, which is why I went ahead and gave it a try.

!!!!!!!!!ITS DONE!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! I just hope everything works! LOL..... random thing I noticed... my internal space went from 27% before the update to 25% after. Anyway.. I'm in heaven...

Agreed,
so it's change the file name to update.zip, place ion SD card root, POWER/VOL UP, recovery, wait for red triangle thingy, POWER/VOL UP again. apply sd card:udate.zip (or something like that).

It'll them ask you to reboot via menu (simply hitting the power button should do it)..

Then, waaait for it,, waaait for it,,,

Voila!

Congtadulations! Your phone has been successfully upgraded to 3.26.651.3..

Good luck all..

Lovin the video LED, Flash (oh yes!!), the flashlight app and some of the new widgets are pretty cool..

Hmm, I wonder if I'll have to update again when the OTA version is released.

I followed these exactly and it said installation aborted. Which file do I rename?

The zip file that you downloaded... You have to rename it update Not update.zip because the file will then be update.zip.zip

Find the zip file you downloaded on your computer and just rename it update

Then plug your phone to ur computer and make sure you hit disk drive on your phone. open your phone files and just drop the update file to your phones sd and then follow the other directions in the list I showed you.
