not as good

i have moved from the palm pre to the evo i did not think any thing could be as good as the palm and i was right the palm is fully customizable with no root and the user interface is just way easier to use. 1 of the main things that is better is the precentral preware so easy to use and has any thing u would ever want to do to your phone from themes to small things like (battery% icons can add pages) just all around better softer ware. i will move back to the new palm phone if its not to ugly i know the the palm is missing some things like voice recognition but it is long in the tooth . i will get use to the android and i do love it just not as much as the pre PALM FOR LIFE LOL MAYBE

I know what you mean about WebOs. I also had the Palm Pre before switching to the Evo. If HP/Palm ever introduces a better quality phone with a nice 4.3" or larger screen, I will buy one in a heartbeat! It's the crap hardware of the Palm Pre that made the swith to the HTC EVO so easy for me.

Don't get me wrong, the HTC evo is the best phone ever but WebOs has the potential to dominate all the competition in the UI department if HP/Palm would simply put it on some nice hardware. Seems stupid that Palm and HP haven't done this already. If they had launched WebOs on hardware like the HTC EVO, it would have gained a ton of momentum in the market and shares would have been much better for Palm. It goes to show that corp.decisions aren't always the brightest.

As for my review of the HTC EVO... After owning mine a couple of weeks after launch I can honestly say this is the first phone that has really satisfied me in every way. This is the first time I have had a new phone that made me not even care about "the next new phone". Simply because the EVO is THAT good of a phone! It does everything I need and a whole lot more.

I couldn't care less what new phone is coming out for the duration of my 2 year contract because the HTC EVO is the bomb and will not get trumped by any new phone anytime soon.

Here's my pros and cons:

Pros:
1.Super fast and very responsive with no lag!!!
2.Super nice 4.3" capacitive touch screen that is very responsive, bright, colorful, and easy on the eyes. (I could NEVER go back to a smaller screen. Once you use the EVO for a while the screen's size doesn't seem so large, it feels just right.)
3.The overall phone design and build quality feels great. It's really thin for a phone this size.
4.Front facing camera with video calls is awesome! During video calls you can also switch to the rear 8mp camera if you want... (I use it when I'm shopping for my wife so I can let her see what I'm looking at on the isles so she can tell me if it's the right item or not). Wonderful!!! Great for video chatting with family and friends that live far away or even just down the street!
5.Android 2.2 "Froyo" includes full Adobe Flash 10.1!!! You can experience the same flah content as on a PC, including games, videos, adds, music players, etc. Works great and MUCH better than "flash lite"!!! AETV.com!!!!
6.Great 8mp camera takes super nice pics and records nice HD video with easy upload options.
7.The overall ease of use and phone features is 10 out of 10!!!

Cons:
1.Not really a con but... Battery life is not going to be the same as lower grade phones you might be used to. This is due to the EVO's 1ghz processor and the multitude of features packed into this device. The battery can last all day with no problem if you don't use every feature for extended periods throughout the day. (turning off GPS and WiFi when not in use, optimizing data syncing of Gmail etc, and keeping phone calls to a minimum will give you plenty of battery life to last you all day). Keep a charger with you when if possible.
2.No other complaints. Buy this phone and rest assured it's a great phone that everybody will envy!!!

great phone

This is my first smartphone so I can't compare it to others. However, if I were to design a smartphone from scratch, I don't think I could do a better job. The Evo is intuitive and easy to use. The only downside thus far is the short battery life. Also, it's a bit bulky but I'm getting used to it.

User Test Conclusion.

Pre user : one year with Sprint. Wife and I got it together.

Evo user: three days. Wife still uses Pre.

try putting the Evo in your hand and work through all of the features like you did with your Pre when you first got it and just play with it. *now, get the Pre and use it. *cough..this is my results.

1. 52" plasma HD vs.13" tv
2. DSL vs Dial up
3. BMW 7 SERIES vs Mini COOPER

get the picture? The Pre WAS a cool phone. The only thing I miss is the multiple cards but its easily forgotten with other full option gadgets and widgets. This phone will make you feel like you own it. Good luck Pre or should l say HP. Another one bites the dust.

My thoughts...

First post.... I'm not breaking any news here since after 200+ posts it's probably been covered already but here are my thoughts. I moved from an iPhone 3G because I was looking for a (slightly) cheaper plan and I figured if I was going to be stuck in a 2 year contract I might as well have 4G. I had no issues with ATT service.

Hardware: Processor, camera, screen etc. are all obviously way ahead of the iPhone 3G. Like the quickness and size of the phone. Wish it had a mute switch (rather than having to click volume-down repeatedly) and it's sometimes difficult to reach the power switch with one hand. Don't like the phone resting on the camera, but it's not that big of a deal. Freakin' love the kickstand. 4G definitely kills my battery - quickly, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with battery life. Would always like more....

Software: Decent amount of apps, hate the pre-loaded crapware (no, I don't need/want to root). Apps that offer both an iPhone and Android version look and function better on the iPhone (Urbanspoon, USAA, RedLaser > Barcode Scanner). MSFT Exchange support not as good as iPhone. No integration between calendar and email for appointments? Can't schedule a meeting via the calendar app??? Where's the "maybe" option for attending a meeting? Why can't I see where an appointment is scheduled on my calendar to decide if I can/want to attend? I like the Sense UI and widgets are really cool. Love the notification bar and using WiMax Notifer is nice for texts too.

Sync: Sure, syncing contacts/email with google is perfect. Add "phone contacts" and "Exchange contacts" and it can get ugly. But that's not my real complaint, syncing music, movies and pictures is more difficult. Yes DoubleTwist is getting there but it's not as good as iTunes. Also, why do I need AppBrain (another separate app/webpage) when the Marketplace should offer that?

Media: I don't like having to wake the phone to pause or skip music (when I could use the headphones previously. I've plugged in the iphone headphones and they sometimes work for pausing but that's it). Sound/video quality seems to be lacking as well. Even the external speaker doesn't sound very good. The movie player(s) seem ugly but they work. Flash does seem to suck *** on the phone, but at least I can access it which is nice.

I'm sure it sounds like I'm bashing Android/HTC but I do like the phone. I think I made a better choice getting the EVO than an iPhone 4, but the overall user experience IMO is not as good which disappoints me. Hopefully Google/HTC will continue to improve the experience (I definitely like seeing frequent updates to the phone).

Regards.

I've had the luxury of being able to jump from phone to phone over the last 3 or so years. Started with the Centro (good system on a too small phone) ^ months jumped to an Instinct(smart phone wannabe), after 6 months moved on to the Pre (good smartphone but too small for me too) 8 months and moved to the EVO on launch date. After 4 months I can say I have found the phone I was looking for. I can do and do everything I can think of with this operating system. I have found the market to be an excellent source of apps both free and paid.....and have since converted 6 others at my job to the EVO and all just love it (even the former I-phone users). I only have ONE small request......the ability for the home scenes to rotate (like when using the openhome themes apps.)

I have been an AT&T/ Blackberry user for almost 4 years now. In my job I get a lot of "free" trial equipment for evaluation. Sprint gave me an EVO to use and I absolutely LOVE it!!! I liked it so much I am thinking of switching carriers just to have the EVO permanently!

Can I have your job?

i just have to say i was in the sprint store today and played with the "epic" and i wasnt impressed at all. it feels very light and cheaply made and reminded me if the moment which i thought was horrible to...just my own opinion though...

The first day I got the EVO I was so excited!!! I ordered one online and when the USPS guy came to the door I looked at the envelope the company put it in??? I said okay whatever, I took it inside opened it up and it looked so beautiful!! I hurried and put the battery in to see what it looked like and.... I almost started crying....... The LCD screen was broken, cracked and bleeding, I couldn't see a thing! I called the company but they seem to blow me off every time I call or email. I tried the post office but they said that I couldn't file an insurance claim, the company had to and it would take weeks!!! So I said okay, I will fix it myself (very dumb of me, I should have just taken it to sprint.) So I went online and bought a new LCD, that company sent me the digitizer!! So I returned it and they sent another in. While it was shipping, I bought an LCD from a different company. I got it today and took the EVO apart and went to install the new LCD and notices that the LCD ribbon is about half the size of the original?? I called that guy and he said it was supposed to fit the EVO, I checked the company sending the one replacing the digitizer and sure enough, that LCD ribbon is the wrong size too!! Both companies said that it was the right size for the Sprint HTC EVO 4G, but the one I have has a wider ribbon cable and every LCD I have found has the small one?? I have an appt. with sprint tomorrow, but I hear it takes weeks for them to get a new LCD. I dont know what to do!!! Does anyone know where I can buy a working LCD for the EVO that has the wide ribbon cable?? Or should I just go with sprint??

FINALLY got my hands on an EVO after what seemed like an eternity. I'm leaving Verizon and the Droid X for this device. I know all carriers have their strengths and weaknesses, and Sprint definitely has the upper hand in my neck of the woods. I haven't run into any glitches with the EVO yet...to me it seems like this phone runs smoother and faster than the X, despite having the same clock speed. I can't say I care for the on-screen keyboard it comes with...but I found and installed the stock froyo keyboard which works much better for me. I'm going to REALLY enjoy this phone for a very long time :-D

Yes, OlDeST, do tell us how you were able to swing an Evo for $75.

Heck, Sprint made me a deal. For customer satisfaction reasons, they got me a new one for $149.99. On top of that, I get the $100 rebate. Plus, I sold my Tour, with all its accessories and extended battery and holster, for $190.00

So I kinda made money by getting this EVO. :D

Every other day I find a new app or forum that gets me excited about this phone all over again!

-EVO-

I had the Palm Pre since launch day and I was pretty happy with it (aside from it self-destructing). I thought the Pre's UI was great and very intuitive.
When I first heard of the EVO I was very excited to try it out. When it launched I stopped by the Sprint Store and immediately decided it was too big so I didn't even give it a whirl.

One year and 4 mths after The Pre's launch, Palm decides to release the Pre 2 and it doesn't look like its coming to Sprint. I was upset to learn this and decided to take a look at Android. I felt that I would have to go with the Epic due to the physical keyboard, but, after reading a lot of reviews I decided that the EVO would be a more reliable phone.

I am more than happy with the EVO and I actually wish that I'd purchased it when i launched. The hardware alone blows the Pre out of the water. And I got used to the on-screen keyboard the same day I bought the phone (no learning curve!) The battery seems better than the Pre, and this thing is FAST! I won't go on a Pre bashing rant. WebOS is great and in time will be a real player (provided HPalm improves the hardware attached to it), but the EVO is hands down a better phone. I'm glad I made the jump.

I'm coming from the Pre and while I thought I'd be a WebOS guy for a long time I must say the Evo is wearing off on me. I still don't think Android is as fluid as WebOS and the multitasking leaves much to be desired but the sheer amount of tweaking I can do with this phone is astounding. It's almost like I have too many options. I'm still a little skeptical that the widget paradigm is where it's at but it's certainly handy not having to open apps every time I want information. I still don't really like any of the on-screen keyboards I've tried as much as a physical keyboard but hopefully I'll get used to it.

Things I love about this phone:
-Great screen!
-Fast
-Extremely customizable
-Very active market
-Relatively skinny for it's size
-Voice control is handy when driving
-Navigation is sweet
-Better apps with more updates than WebOS

Things I miss from my Pre:
-Cards
-Gestures
-Physical Keyboard and just being able to slide it open and start typing to find anything I want.
-Swiping away notifications! Sounds silly but I just got used to swiping everything off screen and Android doesn't use it at all. :(
-3D games. Seriously, Palm crushes Android in the gaming department right now.

Still, loving the phone but I will be keeping an eye on WebOS over the coming months and will probably go back when they offer up some compelling new hardware.
