EVO update 3.70.651.1 NOT

Hey Fred, i was wondering if you could help me. And im not too good with my Htc Evo and i didnt understand some of the things you wrote. But im having the similar issue, i rooted my phone at Unrevoked and today when i went to install the new Htc Evo update 3.70.651.1, it got stuck on a screen with a triangle and a exclamation point in the middle of it. I think i need to un root my evo but i dont know how? Could u give me a good explanation on how to un root it or a way i can get this update. Please help.

Download rom manager from the market, and use it to flash clockwork recovery.

OR

You have one of the new hboots and unrevoked doesnt work for it. This is why i dont suggest unrevoked, people use it and and have no idea what its doing etc.
Check and read the stickies. Info is there for you.

Hey Alan, welcome to AC!

What is your phone running now?

3.29.651 it was what came with the 2.2 wehen the ota for it came out....I'm a truck driver so I don't get to spend a lot of time playing on phone plus always afraid to brick it

Alan, I would suggest grabbing Rom Manager from the market and downloading the android central rom from here: http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-roms-hacks/49106-rom-rebirth-ac-rom-ashes.html

Then copy that file to your sd card, open Rom Mananger, select install rom from sd card, select the zip file, and choose to backup your current rom (just in case) and choose to wipe data.

The android central rom is a trimmed down rooted version of the 3.7 update.

Alan sure you can download the rom right from your phone's browser.

Then in rom manager you just browse to the download folder on your sdcard and select the file.

At that point rom manager will have a pop up with two checkboxes, one for backing up your current rom and one for erasing the data, check both.

It's no problem, ask away, it's always a little un-nerving at first but you'll get used to it.

Hey if I download a Rom is there a way to keep my home screens the way I want them with my apps on the Evo?

What I mean by last post is to keep everything the way it is the apps I have the way its placed on my phone and so on with out having to wipe everything and start over again

It really depends and there's no guarantee - when you switch between Sense based roms you can sometimes get away without doing a full wipe of the phone but that can lead to some problems.

It's always a best practice to wipe the phone (erase/format sd-ext, data, cache, system, sdcard/.android_secure) when switching roms.

If you use a third party launcher like launcher pro or adw you can back them up with titanium backup and then restore them, sometimes this keeps your home screens in tact but you'll most likely have to re-add some widgets.

Also that link you had with the 3.70 update I downloaded it and when the Rom manager tried to install said it was bad any other place I can find it

Flash new Recovery?

@thefredelement:

I unfortunately have also used UnRevoked.:( I have installed ROM manager, and it tells me that it had an error when attempting to install the clockworkmod recovery image.

Unrevoked installed clockworkmod recovery 2.5.0.1, but ROM manager does not seem to recognize it. Is it too old?

How do I update a recovery partition manually? and where can I get the latest clockworkmod recovery?

By the way, just found this thread tonight and you guys ROCK! I have been awash in the sea of Android rooting and roms for the past week and I have felt more comfortable after reading this thread than any other so far in my exploring.

Alan, I would just give the AC rebirth rom a try, you can grab it from the sticky on this forum. It's pretty much stock 3.7 with some bloat removed and a bunch of sprint apps changed to user apps so you can go ahead and remove them if you want to.

Welcome to AC! I'm glad you found the thread the helpful, this really is a great place to get some help and learn and help out others.

As far as your problem with rom manager, I've had this once before myself but can't remember what I did exactly to fix it.

ClockworkMod just came out with a new version today or yesterday, 2.5.1.2

The first thing I would check to make sure is that ROM Manager has superuser permissions, just check the superuser app and make sure it's there and allowed.

Aside from that you can flash clockwork recovery as a PC36IMG.zip file, you'll just want to place it on your sd card, power off the phone, then turn it back on by pressing down the volume down button and power button at the same time, when the white screen loads it may say "fastboot usb" at the top, if it does, just select "bootloader" from the list by using the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select it. Then it will scan the card and ask if you want to update, just hit yes - if your phone loads right to bootloader it will just come up and ask you to update right away.

this is now out dated version 2.5.1.2, clockworkmod is up to 3.0.0.2 (yes, inside of 24 hours).
file: PC36IMG.zip

Did not have NAND unlocked. Once that was done, ROM manager installed recovery and ROM fine.

Thanks again for the help.

Question: I flashed amon ra via adb; however, if I wanted to flash via fastboot, would i rename the img file as PC136.img and then flash? Is that a viable method?

I'm trying to install this update with Fred's method, but I don't know what to do once I get to the bootloader screen.

Any help would be appreciated.

Nope, it has to be combined with android-txt document, you can get it from the PC36IMG file that I put up there and just re-zip it, make sure it's named as "recovery" though.
