Fingerprint reco not working well

While the S23 Ultra is in general a terrific machine its fingerprint recognition system is badly lacking!

After registering a fingerprint the reco typically works OK for a day or two but after that the recognition rate always severely decreases and after a few days becomes quite annoying and almost useless. I am right now at the point where I have to re-register my finger about once a week.
This is tedious, esp. since many apps disable biometric login when the corresponding fingerprint settings have been removed or replaced and U then always have to reenable that.

I can't imagine that my fingerprints are changing that fast! Other fingerprint reco systems that I have been using never showed such issues! In fact I recently restarted an old Lenovo laptop that had been sitting in a drawer for >5 years and it still recognized my thumb on first attempt! Also on my prior Note 9 this always worked reliably.

So, why is the S23's fingerprint recognition deteriorating (or drifting?) so quickly?
Can one do anything about that?

Mine does this also. I let the Verizon store put their screen protector on so not sure if this is the issue or not. But with the cold weather and my hands drying out more I find that if I lick my finger then wipe it off the phone normally recognizes my fingerprint. My S-21 was doing the same thing so it is not just the 23.

OK, I thought it was my fingers or my S23 Ultra as I have been having an awful time with my FPS! I do have a Whitestone Dome protector on but since I installed I re-registered my fingerprints and also tried turning on touchscreen sensitivity. I've also factory reset (for a different reason) and still find the FPS is just terrible!

I recently switched back to my Pixel 7 Pro and I am having no such issues with the FPS (it also has a Whitestone Dome protector on it) so I have to imagine there is something up with the S23 FPS and not my fingers

I've had more misses with the S23 then my old P7P which I think it's funny considering everybody complained about the pixel

I've been lucky. I have had the Note 8, N20U, S22U and the in glass FPS in the N20U was trash. I tried to give it the pass until I got the S22U and experienced what it's like to work like 99% of the time and with the S23U just as happy with it and lucky for me haven't had issue described here.

Also you don't see the posts about FPS like you did back in the N20U days.

Have you tested it without the Whitestone? Whitestone is popular because it works so well with FPS because the liquid adhesive ensures there is no air gap between glass when applied then hardened because hard to have a perfect fit with curved glass compared to glass protectors used on flatter screens like iPhones that work well without using liquid adhesive.

Just maybe your Whitestone is not perfect around the FPS.

I've kinda noticed this too. I have multiple fingerprints added. It seems to me like the phone wants all to be used equally.

I've noticed when one print doesn't work then the other does without issues. Seems to go through all my fingerprints the same way. When 2 don't work the 3rd does just fine.. kinda weird...

Same here. I have white dome screen protector on also. My brother had white dome on had issues. He took his white dome of and issues are gone.

It appears the S23U FPS is sensitive to screen protectors

Yes. I had Whitestone Dome protector on my S21U, and my FPS was just OK at best. Now I'm using the Samsung screen protector, which is film, and basically no issues. Samsung uses the ultrasonic FPS that seems to be susceptible to certain types of screen protectors. Pixel uses optical PFS which seems to work better with screen protectors I guess.

I had nothing but problems with my old s22 ultra but with my new s23 plus it works great everytime even with a screen protector.

I had a similar to Whitestone Dome screen protector that was a privacy protector also, and my FPS was just ok. I have the S23 plus with a regular tempered glass screen protector, and it works better than my Ultra. I did remove the privacy protector and the FPS is perfect on the Ultra

The on-screen FPS sucks compared to the "old" tech. I'm in construction, dry hands and dust and other conditions make the on-screen FPS an exercise in frustration. The old school sensors worked every time. I hate the new FPS.

If you haven't already then face unlock is your best bet with this phone.

Register the same finger twice or thrice under different slots and it'll work always

My husband claims just to unlock his phone it doesn't work alot of times but when he uses it to open like his banking app or another app it works fine. Weird

I've had more luck with it recently and less of the long press is working better for me ..so quick it is for me now

I'm noticing the same ... No issues at all with two banking apps but it's absolutely infuriating trying to unlock the phone.

I have found that it has always been the case even when I had my S22U and maybe back when I had my Note 8. And I think many will also agree with your husband's experience...

When I had my S22U and it was maybe 90% hit... it would be practically be 100% with any app that you set FPS to unlock.

I haven't read anything to confirm it so it's just my belief but I think for apps, they lowered the tolerances on how accurate it reads the print. If, like law enforcement, a phone requires 8-12 points of similarity to say it's a definite match to unlock. I feel for the apps, Samsung lowered that threshold to like 4-6 points.
