Fingerprint Scanner Not Working Well

The problem here is that you can't generalize your experiences to everyone else. A FPS that works well for your fingers may not work well for someone else's, because they have their fingers, not yours.

A person who is taller than you might not fit easily through a door that you do. It isn't because they don't understand doors. Dismissing their comments about door height based on your experiences at your height is not helpful in any way.

You can generalize in that way with capacitive FPS.

The fact that you have to with the in screen FPS is indicative of a problem.

So people that live in a cold or dry environment maybe try this?

Register your finger while it is dry and set that as one finger.
Register the same finger after you apply some moisturizer.

See how that works? I can't do it. Mine works great and in general my hands don't get dry unless it gets really cold and I live in Florida. lol

Haha Florida! Your fingers will be nice and moist often I guess! I'm glad it's working so well for you!

Your suggestion is a nice idea, however, in the worst/dryest moments the FPS won't even recognise my fingers when registering. I have been through the registering process many times (usually when I've had many fails in a row) and in those moments it won't even read my thumbs to register. Very frustrating!

That is a lot of work to get a FP scanner working lol.

Just stating facts. Not generalizing like you wish to believe. Just like when the iPhone face I'd came out many complained on it till they learned to do it better then it improved.

I'm afraid you have not stated any facts.

Regardless, thanks for the input.

I live in Texas and the air where I am is dry and warm. It's cold right now though but so far temps have not changed the behavior of how the touch sensor has worked for me.

Thanks for your opinion but you can research the history of face I'd and see for yourself that what I state is true. Once people learn how to scan their fingers the way they use them, it will work better.

While Face ID was a learning curve you basing that as you being able to factually say that this is nothing but a learning curve is a stretch. You have no factual evidence except that it works for you -- but just because something works for you doesn't mean it is instantly factual for everyone else.

And even then you say it works with you but still fails as well... so....

Actually, "Works just fine for people who follow through the instructions and give it time to learn." is a generalization, as some here who have followed the instructions, and given it time to learn, are still having issues. It looks like the update helped, and practice can improve the result, but it also looks like some other factors can affect the reliability.

You said "Works just fine for people who follow through the instructions and give it time to learn." That is not a fact. It is a guess. It is a bad guess. It is an obviously wrong guess.

It is a fact that you have generalized your experience to other people, and used that generalization to reach a silly conclusion as to why other's are not having much success using the FPS.

I know where the FPS is. I know how hard to press. If I put on lotion, it works just as well as the traditional sensors we are all used to. If I've not put on lotion in the last 15 minutes, it works less than 10% of the time. An inability to follow instructions has nothing to do with these issues.

I have an idea... If someone is completely unhappy with the FP sensor to the point that it's a deal breaker, then why not just return the phone? Everyone here is still within the 15 day return policy, so there shouldn't be a problem.

Others here have recommended ways that work better and they in fact do work better. But people insist to not do it those ways and instead expect it to work like the old fps sensors. That is the factual evidence that anyone can go by here. I said very rarely fails now. The only cause it fails for me now is me not placing my finger in the right spot.

I agree fully so not sure what you point is?

Exactly. Stop complaining about it. Use another way or get another phone. Their inability to get the fps I don't believe is the phones fault here. That is all I am saying.

No, thank you for your opinion.

Some insist .. some have genuine issues. Either way you can't be like "Oh yeah Face ID was (X) so this is the same" as a fact when you have nothing but your own evidence to go off of. Working for you doesn't = fact for everyone else.

I live in Michigan, and it's severely cold and dry here. 16% humidity in my house according to my humidifier currently.

When my hands are cold, I get some issues, but I found that if I hold longer on the flat part of my finger it reads fine. Just takes longer. When my hands are warmer, it's much much faster. I can tap and unlock quite easily then.

People are allowed to complain about an issue with a phone. Just because there is an issue doesn't mean they have to shut up and return the phone and can't voice their opinion. If you want to write things without any opinion or negativity towards your new toy then may I suggest Wordpress.com so you can have a blog with no comments enabled?

It isn't a deal breaker for me. I just wish it worked better.

I work in IT and I can tell you 90% of the time it's not the hardware it's the user. And this is just another case of that. Samsung would not release a product that would have a crap sensor. It works really well once you get it dialed in. If you can't get it to work then get rid of the phone for something that's easier for you to setup or use a different option than fingerprint.
