Fingerprint Scanner Not Working Well

Received my S10+ on Friday and spent the next couple of days trying to get the past learning curve but was seeing terrible results. I registered and re-registered both thumbs multiple times and still was seeing very acceptance rates that were more inconsistent than any bio-metric security feature I have ever seen (even worse that Samsung's initial implication of the iris scanner). Essentially, the FPS is useless to me, so I am returning today.

I am beginning to think the FPS behaves differently for different skin types, because there is no way this thing would have ever made it to commercial production if my experience was indicative of everyone's. Perhaps that's why there are so many inconsistent experiences here and on the other forums?

At any rate, I quite enjoyed the phone, but for this feature. I do home Samsung figures this out.

P.S. I should mention that I also received the FPS update that was pushed out late last week -- no real improvement for me anyhow.

Works just fine for people who follow through the instructions and give it time to learn.

I still haven't received the update but I'm not sure I want to, I have both thumbs and one index finger registered and it's working great. I do however want to get a glass screen protector and I'm worried that might affect it.

The fingerprint sensor works much better for me after the update, but it is slow even when it works. Guess just have to get used to that. Also think having some sort of haptic feedback would make it work better.

I have Verizon ...

1st time set up , added finger but it didnt work well , always fail to read my finger. And the update pop up but I decied install later , after transfer all info from old phone.

And after installed the system update, I deleted all my fingerprints , and re-add again , it work well , 10/10 times read right away ...

AFTER INSTALLED SYSTEM UPDATE , DELETE AND RE-ADD YOUR FINGERPRINTS

Wow. Narrow minded or what?

Like plenty of others, I have spent many hours watching videos and reading articles detailing how best to use the fingerprint scanner. I have tried EVERYTHING that has been suggested and the only thing that makes it work consistently is to moisturise my hands or lick my thumb before I use it.

Sure, sometimes it works great for a few hours like yesterday during the day. Yet when I was out for dinner in the evening I had a roughly 20% success rate with me resorting to licking my thumb after 4 unsuccessful attempts each time. You suggesting I just forgot how to use it in the evening?

Today, it is very cold where I live. My hands are pretty cold right now, meaning they're very dry, and my FPS has barely worked today at all. I'm talking 5-10% success rate. If I applied some moisturiser right now, I would get a near 100% success rate for the next few minutes.

But yes, like you said. I just need to follow the instructions and it'll be work ha!

Seems to be fine for many people. Mine has gotten much better since the update and I have very few failures.

I still think it's a POS in current condition it's in (for me) mornings never works then it starts working decent throughout the day, afternoons it starts messing up again. Night time forget about it, I have redone the finger prints several times and turned on touch sensitivity on. Tomorrow is a week that I have this phone and just can't get consistent results.

I don't disagree. Unfortunately for plenty of others it is not fine. I imagine people who live in warmer climates probably have greater success, doesn't mean it's "right".

I wonder if it's worth returning them for the people who are struggling. Very well could be a bad batch!

I'm guessing the different experiences could have something to do with how dry your fingers are. My hands are extremely dry. I don't have an S10, but I'm guessing I would be one of those who might have a little trouble with it.

I would never have said I had dry hands before owning this phone and having this problem. They just seem perfectly normal! However, maybe that's just it.. the phone wasn't made for lizard hands! Haha

So people that live in a cold or dry environment maybe try this?

Register your finger while it is dry and set that as one finger.
Register the same finger after you apply some moisturizer.

See how that works? I can't do it. Mine works great and in general my hands don't get dry unless it gets really cold and I live in Florida. lol

The problem here is that you can't generalize your experiences to everyone else. A FPS that works well for your fingers may not work well for someone else's, because they have their fingers, not yours.

A person who is taller than you might not fit easily through a door that you do. It isn't because they don't understand doors. Dismissing their comments about door height based on your experiences at your height is not helpful in any way.

The problem seems to be that the ultrasonic sound waves travel better through liquid and solid than air. Dry skin has more air pockets where you would find oils on moister skin. It takes a long time to even register your prints with dry skin, because the reader just can't see your prints well.

I hated the fingerprint reader at first, but have to say, on the whole it is pretty decent. Is it perfect? Hell No, but pretty damn good.

Should it be perfect for £1k, yeah probably, but nothing ever is in any technology.

Just stating facts. Not generalizing like you wish to believe. Just like when the iPhone face I'd came out many complained on it till they learned to do it better then it improved.
