Hello all, I am a convert from the apple bubble. I have decided I needed a change from Apple and have given my iphone 5 to my wife so I can't go back (she has already sold her old iPhone)

So far my experience with my ONE has been mixed.. Its a bit of a shock when you first start using the ONE and there is all the bloatware.. did not like that one bit, I found Nova and that problem was sorted straight away. Blink feed is not for me, i want my social info on request, not feeding into my life all the time. Here are my installed apps (mostly paid for) that I am using to stumble by.

Nova launcher: Fantastic app, love the whole thing, although in 5 days it has crashed twice :/
Week calendar: The best looking calendar I have found for android - gives a month view with a daily preview below. Crashed once.
Google now : I like this.. if it is a bit eery. I am not sure about battery life impact yet... I am still trying to figure out the GPS usage indications.
Airdriod: Superb access to your phone to drag and drop content - The best solution I have found to get content on my device.
Double twist and Airsync : Double twist media player seems to be the best media player i have found so far. Air sync worked, but its a clunky user interface on the computer side, using airdroid instead.
Pocket casts : Podcast app, bought this after reading recommendations here, double twist has a podcast feature which i never tried, Pocket casts does the job, the interface could be better, it has a sleep timer and can skip forward 30 seconds at a time - essential for podcasts. I used instacast on iOS and pocket casts is not as polished as the ios app. You can download your casts and play them fine though.
widget locker: Bought this to get the lock screen behaving nicely, combined with NiLS this is essential, notifications that you can see and reply too from anywhere in the OS. Excellent. Crashed once.
Whats app: Using to send picture messages in stead of MMS. Crashed once.
Textra: Far far better than the stock messaging app, a good solid text app. Some things missing, like the ability to forward sms' but over all its massive improvement.
1password : Terrible looking app, bad GUI and barely usable, Essential to sync passwords between OSX and phone though. Needs work.
HD Widgets: Bought this and don't really use it, can be used to control various features, like light, wifi, bluetooth etc.. I may come back to it, not sure how badly the widgets impact battery life.
Chrome : Tried other browsers but chrome is doing the job nicely.. Has an infuriating 'bug' where touching the address bar does nothing for 3 touches.. then works. Then you touch the cross to remove the text in the box and it seems to miss a lot and ignore the touch.. This happens almost EVERY time.
Google music : Just a bad experience all round. Buggy, artwork displayed incorrectly, crashed twice.
Twitter : Using the stock app, looking for a good replacement (something like tweebot)

Looking for a good app to manage the images on the phone and a good app to manage contacts. The stock apps do this really badly..

So far my experience is middling, dont get me wrong, I am not hating on android or moaning, just passing on my experiences. I have left the iphone for a reason. I want to give th eone a good 6months of use before deciding where my phone future lies. :)

I am thinking about rooting the device to get the latest OS and use android as intended without all the HTC junk.. maybe.

Just my 2 cents :)

Try Robird... is a really simple app but is smooth as tweetbot... missing some key features like mutes and stuff like that but they are coming. The big plus are streaming (wifi and mobile data) and PUSH notifications (about the only app I was able to find with this, all other refresh x amonut of times).

I've used Calengoo as a calendar app for years and it has never crashed once on me. Also use Apex Launcher and it has never crashed. I've also been using Android OS since the days of Froyo and I've never had the OS crash. I came from Crapple and I did have IOS crash and hang up on me more than once.

Wonder what you are doing that's causing your apps to crash? As far as bloatware goes, you must have the T-Mobile or Sprint version. Mine is on AT&T and there is very little stuff I consider bloat. Things like AT&T Hotspot are very useful. I once had a phone with T-Mobile and they really loaded it up with crap, often duplicating their own bloat.

Textra is my favourite texting application as well. And since I installed the Google Play Edition ROM yesterday, I have been using Nova Launcher and it is magnificent.

I'm on o2 in the UK. Thanks for the twitter recommendation.. I will take a look..

The os has not crashed just the apps I mentioned.

The only thing I can think causing the minor snags is the amount of changes and app install / remove I have been doing.

Also forgot I bought SwiftKey, very nice app.

Does the beats audio work correctly? What about the camera etc?

I am not sure what you mean by whether beats audio works correctly? My speakers work just fine and the sound quality is amazing, and so do the earphones that came with the device, if that's what you're asking. I do not think I actually have the Boom Sound feature because I am not on the official 4.1.2 ROM but I have ran custom ROMs based on 4.2.2 ever since I got the device, and only yesterday I installed the GE ROM which is based on 4.2.2 as well and I don't know if it features Boom Sound.

As for the camera, it works perfectly fine for me. I am not a photographer by any means, but I can tell a good picture from a bad one, and my camera takes very good photos both with Sense as well as GE ROMs. Not a lot of people will agree with me on this, but I actually prefer the GE's camera with its simplicity and elegance than the bloated Sense camera with Zoe and all those features which I have never and probably will never use.

You might want to give zoes and Highlights an honest try before writing them off. Most people who have used these features really enjoy them. The loss of the sense camera app is the number one reason I won't be trying the GE roms.

Thanks, seeing as i am only just entering my android life I may root the device to check how android is supposed to operate as intended. without the HTC overlay. Watching videos now. :)

Hmmm after watching some tips and tricks, reading a few articles I think i will leave rooting alone for the time being :/

Rooting is fairly easy if you're clear and open minded while doing it. You'll also have to be patient and calm if you face any problems that may seem impossible to solve.

This guide should get you started:

[GUIDE] Complete Flashing Guide | Rooting | Going Back To Stock | 05.05.2013 - xda-developers

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT skim through it, read every bit of it in order not only to find out how to do it but also learn more about rooting, as in why rooting is good and such.

If you have any questions just start a thread in the Rooting section and I am sure members will help you, myself included.

Thanks for sharing. I'll have to try the widget locker it seems like a great feature.

As for all the crashes, I wonder if you have something going on in the background that is causing your apps to "crash" that secnario is not normal. BTW just because you see a "Wait/Force Close" doesn't always mean the app has crashed. It usually means the app has not responded by a given time. That tells me you might have a lot going on on the phone. (See below)

One of the great features w/ side effects of Android is that it's a true multitasking OS. You can have things run concurrently while you get work done on your phone. The side effect is it can degrade your experience if you have to many things running on your device at once. My Android phone is very stable and very responsive. At times I'll notice a lot of lag and instability (Force close dialog of apps that where once stable). I've realized that it is usually due to me running too many apps. Apps that run as services usually are the culprits.

=X=

Rooting is easy, but I agree hold off until you have a need.

I held of 6mo before I rooted my Note II. Finally the bloat ware was getting on my nerve and I was running out of disk space.

Wow textra is great! Soooo much better than stock. Thanks for recommending!

Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4 Beta

I am not getting why you are having crashes. I have had my HTC One for about two months, and I do not recall a single crash.

I was a huge Tweetbot fan on iOS, and found some of the android offerings a little maddening in comparison. But once I found and tried Falcon Pro, I was hooked. Definitely my favorite twitter client on android and worth a look IMO.

Cheers!

Seems like thou have had a busy 5 days! Yes it is all new and seems strange and there are random frustrations but they will pass soon as you get used to the world of Android. You have however, already stumbled on to its greatest asset, choice. You obviously have a very clear idea of what you need from a phone and Android gives you the flexibility to find apps that suit your personal style and preference. Because of Apples strict control of their app store the number of choices for say, a Twitter app, are limited, the options will always be well tested and good quality, but limited nonetheless. With the Play store you have many more options, admittedly there will be a few lemons in there, but the chances of you finding an app that does what you need, in the way that you want it to, are far greater.

I love Nova and use it on my Samsung tablet, which is also rooted to 4.2.2, but my HTC One remains stock, mainly because rooting will invalidate the warranty but also because I find that Sense works for me and is wonderfully fluid and responsive. The 4.2.2 update to the stock rom doesn't look like it holds that much interest for me so I'll take it when it comes, but I am not checking for updates 3 times a day. Once the warranty period is over I will look at the roms available and might switch then, but if anything ever happens before that HTC will not touch a rooted phone.

Keep experimenting and remember that the most beautiful thing about owning an Android phone is that your Android phone is completely different to every other Android phone. It is unique to you and the way you work and interact with it and anything that isn't, can be changed for something that is.

Nova gets a lot of love here on AC, but truthfully I think ADW.Launcher is better.

It has better support, skins, stable, and features.
