FIVE weeks with the HTC ONE, NEW things i HATE. help?

Re: two weeks with the HTC ONE, things i HATE

i have android file transfer and i have used bluetooth to send a file or two over to the phone. but i am scared to upload all 125GB of music to gmail. i don't use my phone as an ipod anyway.

Why? It doesn't hurt to back it up to Google and another place.

i signed up for dropbox this week. i think it's costing me $10 for 100GB per month. i do have my music backed up to one local external drive. and i occasionally give away a duplicate to friends with similar taste in case of fire/earthquake/alien invasion. i don't want to pay for another cloud service. or is google free???

Re: two weeks with the HTC ONE, things i HATE

I woke up in hospital after being knocked off my bicycle by someone who was texting while driving. 2.5 years on and I still have no recollection of the accident. Or the week preceding it lol.

OP, all I can recommend is to give it some more time. There was a lot which annoyed me when I got my nexus 7, but ultimately it has convinced me to jump ship form iOS to an HTC One. If you can't get along with the keyboard, try swipe or a 3rd party app maybe?

Also, I've not had a problem with any of the apps I've donwloaded - o the One you shouldn't have to worry about device compatibility.

swipe definitely seems to help. it is amazingly accurate at predicting the next word. but it gets a lot of words that use similar gestures wrong. i have had the ONE for three weeks now and not a single day has passed i don't miss having a physical keyboard. my fingers aren't fat, but i can't for the life of me accurately hit the keys on this swift-key keyboard...especially on the edges (q, p, etc). i have tried two thumb texting and one finger pecking and neither are anywhere near as efficient as blackberry. but i can't go back now. i am addicted to having instagram et al and BB have fallen too far behind. maybe the big surprise will come when i am eligible for my first t-mobile jump! upgrade: i could go back to BB instead of over to iphone! text/email is the second most important feature i need on any phone. or maybe i will get better and better with practice. i've heard practice makes perfect.

also, i have tried the google keyboard. i liked it a lot, and felt like i was hitting the keys more accurately. but it didn't have arrow keys (a necessity for correcting all the mistakes i make), and i didn't see a punctuation key like the swift-key keyboard has.

Re: two weeks with the HTC ONE, things i HATE

Now that you have been using the swift key keyboard for a week, is it getting better? After it has a while to learn from your habits, I think you will find that it predicts your next word with a high degree of accuracy.

Use sugar sync.

If you use AT&T, try the app that they have on the play store for messaging. I know that the Verizon messaging app is very good, it is what I use.

Go to your location settings and only select Google GPS. It will cut down on the number of processes that ping your location and drain battery. Also, there may be a Powersave mode. If not, keep the screen brightness down. The screen eats up the vast majority of your battery.

The Google voice commands as an option to learn from your speech. Try turning it on for a while and see if that helps.

If none of that works, there is always the new BlackBerry.

haha. i wish! i came to android after years of blackberry, and only after the bitter disappointment of the new Q10.

i still can't figure out google voice. it will literally recognize a name in my phonebook but not give me the option of dialing them. it still won't call my mom. call dad works fine. searching using the voice feature is terrific.

i keep GPS off unless i am out and need specific google maps navigation.

i am with t-mo which is the primary reason i do not have an iphone (they didn't have the iphone until this year).

sugar sync looks good. but it looks like a cloud based service, like dropbox, not a back-up restore sync app. is it? i have learned to use google for contacts and calendar. but i am still missing the ability to back up the phone in case i lose or replace it and want to simply restore the next device to match.

thanks for the help!!

Not to start a flame war, but your HTC is about an even value trade for an iPhone 5... you could probably swap outright on craigslist.

As far as your One...
Okay, when you said sync, I thought you were referring to music and media. That is the concern that most people have switching platform.

If you want to backup your device, and I mean really back it up, the general consensus is that Helium is the best non-root app. If you are not rooted, you will still have to use a cloud service. No app can access on device back up without root, or an SD card.

Google voice is hit and miss for some reason... I actually use Nuance voice dictation and the Samsung voice controls built-in to my phone. I honestly don't know why. I have perfect English (sober). Even Siri has people that it doesn't like, and it's powered by Nuance!

Of all of the 3rd party voice command apps I've seen, I'd have to say that Robin is the best blend of accuracy and simplicity. Give it a shot.

Google Music is free. You can upload like 50k songs for free. File size is irrelevant. This way your entire library stays on your Google account and be streamed from any android or Pc (also download able on Pc / storable to your Android).

yeah, i have too much music for my phone. and i don't take a lot of pictures with it or want to store a lot of photos on it. of course i am a little jealous when i see my iphone friends scroll through hundreds or thousands of pictures on their iphones.

i will check out Robin. i too have an excellent speaking voice and difficulty with google. i don't expect it to be perfect. but 'call mom' should be a given!

i will also check out Helium. someone, maybe in this thread, suggested that google back up was sufficient. but i only manually back up my contacts using google. so helium might be a better, more thorough back up.

thank you!

quick question (don't want to start a new thread):

i am totally new to android. and it seems like every other day i receive a notification that one or more of my apps has an update. generally speaking, is it good practice to always update all the apps? or if they seem to be working fine, leave them alone? bonus question: after a back up should i do a restart?

thanks!!

No they give you 50k free song uploads. They limit it by how many songs.. Not file size. No catch. Do you not use your Google services? :P. I love Google music for their streaming service (that costs) but you can also put your own music in there so it's available everywhere... At no cost.

well i have had gmail accounts forever and google voice that i only use when i need to use a 'fake' number. i am using various google services more frequently now that i have an android. and i know they are loaded, but i can't imagine them giving away 130GB of storage (a little over 30k songs). when i was looking at cloud services the other day, they were about half the monthly cost of dropbox...but the reviews i read said dropbox was better/faster/etc.

what does the streaming cost? does it eat up battery? thanks!!

Re: two weeks with the HTC ONE, things i HATE

I apologize I checked again it's 20k songs now.

http://music.google.com

Log in and go to the my library tab.. Hit upload music at the top right. Bam.

Streaming your own uploaded music is free. To be able to stream their entire library (not stuff you uploaded) is $10 a month. It's like Google Spotify.

Your music is free always to stream though :).

Edit - or you can "pin" it to your device while on wifi to download the music to your phone.. Listen to it.. Unpin stuff and replace it with others. I'd take a look at it :).

Just to make sure - you know you can get a free terabyte on flicker for photos, right?

Re: two weeks with the HTC ONE, things i HATE

You have 30 days to return the phone in California? Last time I returned a phone here on day 14 they gave me a lot of static. I was in the store for one hour before they finally gave me my money back.

Re: two weeks with the HTC ONE, things i HATE

I forgot to mention Flickr, as another poster suggested. It could be easier to use, but it is a free terabyte, and it is a beautiful app.

The reason android has so many app updates is because there are so many devices. Every time a vendor releases a new app, or version, they find new bugs for one or two the millions of different android phones. Since you have a very mainstream phone, it is unlikely that any of the minute bug fixes that get released after a major update will have any effect on your phone.

I honestly ignore most of the updates until I hear a bout a major release, and then I go through and update all of them.

I used to be one of those guys that rooted and customize every phone... But now, I just leave my new stuff factory. I might be missing a few cool features this way, but at least I have guaranteed stability and if something did go wrong, I would know it isn't because of a custom ROM.

I guess my final advice is, pick something and stick with it. Since you have a good bit of onboard storage, use Google play music for your music, and Flickr for your photos, and back everything up with helium. Google will automatically match all of your music from your computer onto the cloud and store it. Flickr will automatically sync all of your photos. And helium will back up everything on your phone to Google Drive. Don't download a bunch of redundant programs doing the same thing. Keep the phone clean, and you will get good battery life and less clutter.

End of speech.

The same catch that all free services on Google have....the potential to advertise to you. Just like Gmail is free. just like searching with Google is free.

I apologize I checked again it's 20k songs now.

it's always been 20,000 songs, much to my dismay previously. But now that All Access is here, that changes things for me. I doubt that I have anywhere near that number of songs that Google doesn't already have. Whereas before I would have with my entire collection. Most people probably could say the same, and I am sure Google rather have people pay them money every month now that All Acess is here, so I don't see them changing that song limit anytime soon, if ever. Although Amazon let's people upload more songs, for an annual fee if someone wants to go that route.

thanks to you and the others for recommending flickr. i used to have a pro account but let that slide when i updated my photography site.

does this mean i would get rid of dropbox? i currently have my pictures backing up to dropbox, but as i may have said before don't take a lot of pictures with my phone. i still shoot film in the real world.

speaking of onboard storage...can anyone help me with this? i went to check my battery and accidentally hit the storage button. what it revealed was a little disconcerting to this novice. of the 32GB of storage available on this phone, 8.6GB was being used and nearly 7 of those GB were being used by 'other'. what the heck is 'other' and why is it hogging my storage space?? pic below...

thank you!!

Dropbox is easier to use and manage files, but a free terabyte is hard to pass up.

I wasn't a fan of the stock keyboard either, and jumped when Google released theirs. It's great - I recommend you give it a shot.

Cheers!

The Sense 5 keyboard is way better and looks better than the stock Android keyboard in my opinion.
