Fix tethering on the HTC One M8

This is a quick text edit for rooted users to bypass the tethering provision check. It was quite useful to me as I used a Verizon HTC One M8 with both my work line and T-Mobile personal line.

Using a root enabled file explorer (I prefer Root Explorer, but ES File Explorer File Manager also has root access), browse to /system/customize/ACC/. Once you find it, long press on default.xml and select Open in Text Editor from the dialog box that pops up.

What you see once default.xml is opened is carrier specific settings for how certain HTC apps work. The apps are listed alphabetically so scroll all the way down near the end to “Tethering_provision” and note the value. If it is “1″ this means Tethering Guard is enabled so just replace it with “0″ and save the file. Once you have closed everything, reboot your phone for the new setting to take effect.

Kpetrie77,

I tried to follow this method. However, after I had edited default.xml, the phone would not let me save the changed file. The app only reported that the save operation failed. As a follow-up, I copied the file to a different folder, changed and saved it. But, the phone would not let me overwrite the file in the /system/customize/ACC/ folder.

Any ideas to work around this?
Obliged.

This is assuming S-OFF which set write protection to disabled.

Kpetrie77,

I finally had the chance to have S-OFF on my phone. At least that's what the Fastboot says. Also, it has been unlooked and rooted according to the Root Checker app. However, while I can edit that default.xml file, I still cannot save it to the phone. What is a way to have this corrected file save to this area of the phone?

Any assistance in this matter would be notably appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have a brand new HTC one M8 which came on order from a seller in Japan. So far it has all signs of being genuine model. One thing i need urgently is to be able to tether it to my PC. I have managed to pair my PC with the phone but it is does not show up in the list of internet/network connections. All signs from my computer, and the pairing feature shows that it should be OK, so I am wondering if there is a problem with the phone. I have found info on HTC sync manager, but I don't know if this will work. I have also found a post on root file explorer, which may help, but surely this should not be necessary for a brand new phone. Is this a common problem?
