Freezing / Lock-ups and SD card issues?

Anyone experiencing any lock-ups or issues with the SD card being forgotten about?

We purchased 3 phones from the same RadioShack and all of them are getting notices that the SD card has been removed (when it hasn't) or notices that it is safe to remove card - these are coming out of the blue.

On two of the phones, they have locked up to the point where they won't come out of 'standby' mode and we've had to pull the battery.

I get the same notification about the SD card although I'm pretty sure your lockups would have nothing to do with that because.
1) An SD card is not required for Android to operate as an OS
2) Mine has not locked up 1 time and I've had it for a couple days longer than most :D

The SD card un-mounting is certainly an issue that needs to be looked into but I'd probably put that out of your mind when trying to troubleshoot the lockup issue. Good luck!

side note: I formatted my card a couple of days ago and added an EXT4 partition and a little swap space (for future mods) and I haven't noticed it unmount since then.

EDIT - Geeze kind of left you hanging on the whole lockup thing. Sorry. What I'd do is take one of those phones that has locked up, uninstall anything you've installed from the app store and let it run for a couple of days. Also if you can determine a pattern as to when or why it locks up that would be ideal cause then you could logcat and try to figure out where exactly the issue is.

Thanks for the great reply. Do you think that this SD Card notification issue could possibly be 'cured' by simply formatting the SD card?

As for the lock-up, I believe I noticed it in the morning. I leave the phone on all the time and had it on the charging cable all night long. In the morning I pressed the power button (expected to get the lock screen) - but nothing happened. Long press on the power button, nothing happened. I had to pull the battery.

Formatting the SD card is certainly a quick easy place to start regarding the unmounting. It's quite possible i just haven't noticed it unmounting since i formatted it but i guess there's a small chance that fixed something.

Now that you mention the lockup happened when taking it off the charger, once when i was unplugging the phone after a night of sleep the screen went black and the phone wouldn't respond. I waited about 30 seconds and it rebooted itself without me doing anything. I really didn't pay much attention because it's only happened to me once but it's very odd you had it happen when doing the same thing.

I wonder what would happen if you had the screen on and using the phone while you unplugged it. Might want to try that.

it definitely seems like there are a couple of bugs out there. This has also been verified on another forum I post on.

PERHAPS the SD card bug could be fixed by completing a format.

When I had the lock-up problem I attempted to wake the phone WHILE it was still connected to the charging cable, and that is when it would not respond. This is the biggest problem because I am currently on-call 24x7 for my job this month - so I can't deal with a phone that might seize-up sometime during the night.

Just to give a little more info I have the t and have had none of these issues.

So I've been racking my brain on this and I actually have a couple of ideas.
Memory Card mount/unmount:
I have been paying really close attention since this thread and mine has not done it all day. Before it would do it CONSTANTLY (maybe 10x's a day). I'm thinking the formatting helped. I formatted mine the good old fashion way with gparted using my PC. I did not (nor would I) recommend using the default Android format SDcard option. Put the SDCard into your computer and use windows partition manager or gparted or whatever else to format that baby with FAT32. Make sure you copy all contents off the card first, then just copy back after formatting.

Please format your card in the way i state above and report back.

Freeze when unplugging:
I have a theory on why this may be happening and how to avoid it. I can only do 50% of the test per night so it's going to take me 2 nights minimum. I say minimum because I've only had this happen once which is what actually led me to my theory

Cheers!

Will try the SD card format on a PC.

What's your theory about the locking up while unplugged issue? I could try some testing if you want.

I got my phone last Thursday. Haven't seen any issues with a hard lock nor have I seen any messages about the memory card. I did have the phone spontaneously reboot on me once, but, I've been really dirty about installing everything that even remotely interested me in the app store, so, I blame that. Phone's been great otherwise ('cept for several annoyances, like the proximity sensor not working on voice mails!... grrr)

I had my phone a little early then released I think it was friday I played with mine and now I see that everyone is haven the sdcard probblem I thought it was just my phone and sometimes my phone when I try and unlock it by pressing my power button it takes 30 sec to wake up the phone then i just start holding the power button down hard and it finally wakes up an I could use the phone its strange that happens some times but the sd card thing comes up like 6 times a day if I try and wake the phone up and it says sdcard ejected

Bueller? Bueller? lol anyone do this yet. Still watching and I'm FAT32 without any issues. Did FAT16 for a few hours without any issues as well and as i said before, this was happening like 10x's a day to me prior to formatting.

I returned mine a few days ago and haven't been able to talk phone owners #2 or #3 into formatting their cards yet.

You mentioned that the lock-up and having to pull the battery problem is likely unrelated to the SD card issue... however is it possible that the OS could be seizing up in some instances when the SD card issue occurs?

Mine only looses the sd card when its plugged in charging. The card does not unmount but none of the programs can read from it. If I go into settings and unmount and remount the card without removing it, it mounts back fine. I will try formatting it tonight and see if that helps. Also my bluetooth will turnoff by itself and will not turn back on until I reboot the phone.

My GF's phone also did this once today. It forgot about the SD card.

I went into settings SD and storage, unmounted and remounted the card.

I will be watching this thread. Seems like an issue with the phone.

I formated my sd card yesterday and it was on the charger all night and did not loose connection with the card. Hopefully the format worked. This is the first night it has not lost the sd card. I did a full format (not quick format) in windows 7.

I am not sure if I am having the same problem or not with sd card, but several times a day i see "preparing sd card" in the notification area of my phone. I tried to format it in the android os, but the format sd card is grayed out. I will try formatting in a computer, but any idea why the format option is grayed out in the android os?

Yep, you are experiencing that error. Luckily in your case, when the phone 'forgets about' the SD card, it is able to see it again.

I believe you have to select the option to unmount your SD card before you're able to format it within the phone. However people have suggested to unmount the card, format it on a computer, then place it back in the phone. Just make sure you save everything from the card to another location before formatting it, so you can save it.
