Freezing / Lock-ups and SD card issues?

same thing here. bought the phone, and had 2 lock-ups and always got the disconnect message. bought an 8gb sdhc card @ best buy, and haven't had a problem since *knocks on wood*

Does Class 2 / 4 matter with a cell phone? I'm looking to replace the 2gb that my lady's phone came with for an 8gb. SanDisk Class 2 or Lexar Class 4? My Epic came with a Class 2 and I haven't had any issues, and it doesn't seem ridiculously slow or anything.

I'm not entirely sure it's the Samsung card per se, more that it's something related to how the phone is dealing with SD cards. I've been having some on and off issues with some apps; however they work on my roomate's LG Optimus M. After getting the message about the SD card unmounting, I decided to take a look at it through a disk check on my desktop - and it had errors. Backed it up, formatted it from the phone, and restored the data; I've had no issues with those apps since.

Granted it's too early to really say it definitively, but it seems that the phone doesn't like bad SD cards. Can try to use the Samsung card that came with the phone and see if it causes any additional stability issues for me.

I'm new to android (happy to have abandoned WebOs) and just activated my phone last Thursday and almost immediately was having the SD unmounting issue. It would occur 5 to 6 times a day. I took my phone in to Sprint on Tuesday evening. The guy (who said they haven't had this problem reported at their location) looked at it for awhile and looked around at what I had downloaded on the phone and suggested I get rid of the Backgrounds application downloaded on my phone (not on the SD card). He thought the issue might be related to the communication between the application and the SD card b/c its storing backgrounds I choose to download on the SD card.

I deleted it and... knock on wood...have not had an issue since. It's been about 36 hours so far and no unmounting anymore.

I still have the stock 2gb SD Card in that the phone came with...but it doesn't say LG or Samsung anywhere on the card that I see. Going to buy a new one. Should I get 8g or 16g? And is Class 6 necessary? Class 4 is much more affordable! I tend to download junk, but never filled up my 8g Pre.

thanks in advance for any input and avoid technical jargon...its way over my head :)

My Epic came with a Class 2 card and it's worked fine. That said, I bought a Class 4 for my girlfriend's Optimus, but mainly cuz it was on sale, not cuz of the class :)

Man this thread is getting convoluted. For those of us that are having this problem, here is the SIMPLE solution. I am going on 24 hours without a problem and keeping my fingers crossed.

~ Get rid of the SD card that comes with it. Spend $10-$20 (need a bigger one anyhow) and buy a new one.
~Install new SD Card.
~Format it(yes you must 'unmount' it first--not physically but on the phone screen).
~DONE.

I am a noob to smart phones, but if your phone is trying to mount/unmount the card all of the time and is shutting itself off, than it is either an issue with the phone or the SD Card and not neccesarily a software issue. So get rid of the stock SD Card and get rid of the problem! OK, now I will go back to quietly crossing my fingers and hoping that I am done with this issue. Thanks, and not trying to be snarky, simply trying to speak to us smartphonetards.

FWIW, while I haven't experienced any SD card issues...to my knowledge, my phone has locked up from time to time. It seems to happen more frequently with 3D apps, though not exclusively. Quadrant has frozen on me multiple times during the 3D tests. So has Angry Birds and some 3D car racing game. Astro File manager froze a couple times as well.

Not sure what to make of all that.

So I've been racking my brain on this and I actually have a couple of ideas.
Memory Card mount/unmount:
I have been paying really close attention since this thread and mine has not done it all day. Before it would do it CONSTANTLY (maybe 10x's a day). I'm thinking the formatting helped. I formatted mine the good old fashion way with gparted using my PC. I did not (nor would I) recommend using the default Android format SDcard option. Put the SDCard into your computer and use windows partition manager or gparted or whatever else to format that baby with FAT32. Make sure you copy all contents off the card first, then just copy back after formatting.

Please format your card in the way i state above and report back.QUOTE]

Yeah, no more dropping my sd card randomly Thanks!! :)

I got this phone monday for my wife. It shut down 3 times in the last 4 days called customer service this morning they helped me reprogram the msid and said if it does it again take to a sprint store.

Just got back from the sprint store where they told me it was because I have angry birds downloaded and it is taking up too much space that I should erase all text msg and any unused apps and that should fix it.

I did just format the sd card on the pc hopefully that fixes the issue as i don't believe it is a lack of storage space causing the problem.

Got the Wintec 16 gb class 10 from newegg for 29$ it works pretty well. Though I don't think it's class 10 cuz for small files it doesn't transfer at 10MB/sec.

Ok, I read thought most of it, but there is so much info here I am getting confused.

I am now on my 3rd Optimus S from Sprint because of the SD unmounting issue. Of course everyone at the store states I am the only one having the issue (which I find hard to believe) Has any one found a successful way to stop this? I heard to format the SC card, or buy new SD card, or that it is one of the apps I have downloaded (which could be it I guess, the first I do when I get it is download the background/ringers/apps I want.) The last time I was at the store they told me it was the antivirus I downloaded (even though it was unmounting BEFORE I ever downloaded that app, so I am sure I am going to continue to get the run around on this. I have 8 days left on the 30 days, and I am about to return the dang thing. I really do not think it is too much to ask that something works when you buy it....so does can anyone here tell me they had this issue and found a fix and have no seen it again for over a week?

Sounds to me like you should just spend the $15 and get an SD card different from stock. If you're going back to the same store and exchanging it, they could have units all from the same batch, meaning they could all have the same defect.

I thought about that too. But I doubt it because the reason the 3 replacements have taken a week a peice is because they never have any in. In a 3 week time span, and them selling out at least once a week, I find it hard to believe they were the same batch. One of them was even sent up from another store in another state because they did not know when they were going to get any in. I have also considered just getting another card, and I think I will try this. I just hate the whole "clock is ticking" feeling. If I go even 1 day out no one at Sprint will help you with out saying the word "refurbished."

Get another card and be done with it. You've probably spent as much on gas going back and forth than you would have if got another card. That has only been suggested 20 times in this thread.....

Lots of things have been suggested in this thread. I went and got another card...and same issue. But thanks for the response anyway.

ok I now think the locking up and sd card unmounting issue are two different problems, I was not having the unmount problem until I formatted the card now I do. Phone still locks up, so I put in an old sd card that I had and will see if that solves any problems.

Got the Wintec 16 gb class 10 from newegg for 29$ it works pretty well. Though I don't think it's class 10 cuz for small files it doesn't transfer at 10MB/sec.

Got the same one. Seems to work no issues. its more like class 6

Freezing/Screen Taps not recognized

I started having some issues when I switched from the supplied 2GB SD to a Transcend 8GB SDHC (Newegg). I just copied the contents from the 2GB to the 8GB.

I started having issues with the screen freezing and screen taps not being recognized.

I turned off the phone, took out the 8GB, formatted it with Windows/FAT32, recopied the 2GB card contents to it, re-inserted and turned phone back on.
Seemd to be working OK now.

Swaped out the Samsung card for a sandisk. So far it feels better. No more hangs from unmounting and remounting the card. Hopefully this will remain like this.
