Froyo OTA: First Impressions

I'm totally loving me some Froyo! I installed the ROM.zip from the RUU on Thursday and after getting everything back to normal Froyo has been a blast. Haven't had to you my Taskiller since install. Memory management is outstanding. Haven't dropped under 100MB.

P.S. My fav small fix is how the icons rotate with the camera, from portrait to landscape.

thats strange cause my xp recognized it as a disk drive, but I didn't see any stupid VCAST- just a bubbly my verizon app. oh and VZNavigator- like I don't have enough maps already---

Ok so now that people are getting this has anyone had a chance to really play around with the Youtube app (v .21)?

Anyone getting more "Sorry problem playing video" messages than usual?

Have my froyo for two days now and heres my impressions:

I ran the quadrant benchmarking app and scored consistently around 1180-1290. Compare that to an average score of 540 with 2.1thats more than double!

Flashlight app works great with three different levels of brightness.

Went to the Market and used the new "update all" feature very nice

I previously downloaded the beta for swype. Now an error appears saying I lost some functionality of this app since the identity of my phone has changed. As a result I can type on the keyboard but when I draw lines it will not work. This defeats the whole purpose of using swype. dissapointing. Let me know if theres a way to get it back.

Experience a few force closes but that has stopped

I've successfully moved apps to SD card

I havent got to do too much battery life analysis but I havent noticed a change.

Rooting 2.1 b4 OTA update

While waiting for 2.2 ota on my DINC, I thought it would make sense to root 2.1 b-4 the ota

Make sense to do that now or wait till 2.2 gets rooted.

I had a back-and-forth e-mail exchange with HTC's Support Forums. Their response was they are aware of this issue and plan to fix in the next ROM update. In asking whether this would be weeks or months, there response was to keep checking the US Support Page (aka, they haven't a clue when this 'll get to customers).

Browser lag was easily understood as being all the extra flash on pages... Changed Plugin to On Demand and that went away.

How do you do this? Is this option only available for rooted devices? In the browser setting I only see an option for loading the images. Thanks!

The internal memory will come up as a drive, but the sdcard is only accessible via Vcast, which is a knock-off of iTunes from the 2 minutes I used it.

I'd really like to disable the Vcast auto-install (if I cancel, the sdcard drive never shows up) so what I'd like to do is disable the autorun of Vcast install and just have the sdcard show up like normal.

If anyone else is having this please let me know your experience thus far.

A couple of people have mentioned being able to view MMS without the slideshow. If I get a MMS with text attached (not a title), it still goes into slideshow mode. Is there a setting I'm missing to stop this?

when i plug in my dinc, 3 windows explorer windows pop up. used to be 2. the new on has software that will install a vcast crapware. try uninstalling all vcast in your control panel and see if the windows explorer window appears again.

I've noticed that the volume control on the phone no longer functions unless you hit the power button and unlock the phone. In 2.1 I could just hit the volume buttons while the phone was in my pocket.

Mine only works after power/unlock. But I'm pretty sure it was that way before 2.2. Actually I don't want the volume changing accidentally when I pull it out of my pocket.

I had this same thing happen. Uninstall and reinstall the installer and the program from the beta website and it should start working again.

Some people have also reported that if you switch back to the regular keyboard (long press on text input area then switch to Touch Input) type a few things and switch back to Swype, it would start working again. This did not work for me, but a reinstall from the website did.

My home/menu/back/search buttons don't light up anymore. Which sucks, 'cause it was one of the sexiest bits of the phone!

Anyone else having a similar problem?

I'm having the problem with apps re-starting all the time too. Used to have about 250+ MB free after a reboot & killing all tasks. Now I get about 180 MB. After a few minutes, I kill tasks & I am down to 130 MB. If I repeatedly kill tasks, I can get it back to 160 MB. Put the phone on the charger overnite & woke up to 84 MB after killing tasks! WTF!?

Hate the bloatware & the fact that we cannot remove it.

Does seem a little faster as a whole. Have to play with it some more.

Here is what I've noticed so far:

I had to restart the phone to get 3G coverage back.

The phone was just reporting my 16 Gb sdcard as either being full or not existing, depending on who you asked. After plugging into my computer and ejecting, it's behaving normally.

Flash over the 3G connection is pretty hilarious. I tried to watch an episode of The Daily Show. You get normal video and incredibly slow audio.

I have had problems with 3G also. Yesterday when I first had it I restarted the phone and it worked. But it showed up again today and I did *228 to update roaming (a whim) which restarts the phone. When it is working it is great. I working a dungeon with spotty 1x coverage. Both times I've had the problem was after leaving the tome. Hmmm...

Anyway, no problem with the sdcard. And yes, the Flash is pretty bad over 3G. I get the slow audio thing I think was mentioned earlier.
