Froyo OTA: First Impressions

Yes, fellow Androidians (I should trademark that one!), I finally got my FroYo at 9:47 a.m. this morning in Brooklyn. I remembered to put on my Wi-Fi connection after I got the update message on my phone. After about 6-7 mins. it loaded up and told me to try and type so it could correct my spelling, (which I skipped... I know how to type!), and voila! I noticed that when you touch the menu button on the home screen, the first option that used to say "All Programs" now is replaced with "All Apps", which is interesting.

Switching from screen to screen or using Leap is a little faster, which is a little surprising since I thought it was fast enough. You can't use the menu button to unlock the screen anymore, unless it's in the option menu and haven't looked. Now I am off to run Neocore/Linpack/Quadrant to see how much of an improvement this frozen desert really added.

I ran quadrant to see the results and sure enough they were better then pre-froyo which was expected, however, my device doesnt run better. Infact, Id say it runs slower, especially the browser. Much much slower. Web pages are laggy, choppy and scroll up an down at a snails pace, its rediculous. Even with Plugins on demand its still slow, and choppy. It crashes a lot also.

I love the new options...but for some reason whenever I check my Task Killer, random apps keep running. When I try to shut them down, they keep popping back up a second or two later...and sometimes the app won't shut down at all. I saw on the market that I should delete the app and then reinstall it...but that doesn't seem to have changed much.

Has anyone else had this trouble?

Also, my Grooveshark has been skipping a lot of songs and cutting out of songs halfway through.

Other than that, it's great. I expected there to be a few bumps in the road as this thing was rolled out. I know it's only a matter of time before they release some patches.

Woke up at 6:00 AM in Orlando, FL with a push notification on my phone saying there was an update. Had a good Dose of FROYO for breakfast. Really liking it, seems to be running faster, drains my battery a little faster than 2.1, hoping the battery thing is just an illusion and it will really last as long as it did before.

What's up with not having "auto brightness" as an option on the settings widget? I distinctly recall from the Froyo keynote that they were adding a fourth option on the brightness button -- off, medium, max, and auto. Is this yet another upgrade that HTC decided to leave out for no apparent reason?

I don't get how people are sayin they're lagging now. I'm faster than ever. Has anyone else noticed in System Panel I'm running 600mhz ~ 800mhz!! Any given day on 2:1 I would be around 300mhz ~ 500mhz.

Out of curiosity, was I the only one who lost the option to store calendar events locally (on the "Phone" calendar)?

I really liked that ... There are some things I don't want Google to store in the cloud. Plus, it deleted every local event I had stored before the update. That was annoying. D:

Yeah, the "My Calendar" seems to be gone. Annoying...

@bart151
Here is my Linpack/Quadrant/Neocore scores on August 25:
Neocore 25.8
Quadrant 551
Linpack 6.479

And here are my scores from 10 mins ago after I got my update this morning to FroYo:
NeoCore 26.4
Quadrant 1149
Linpack 34.12

Definitely an improvement. But I will test out what you said about the browser being laggy.

V Cast

Prior to Froyo, I'd plug in the dinc, tell the dinc to disk drive, and boom, two drives (one for phone, one for sdcard). Now only the phone drive shows up and I get prompted for V Cast install to "Transfer Media".

This is not good, I hate installing overhead software to do normal file transfer.

Anyone else having this happen?

Guys even though this is the OTA the flash version is still beta. The full version of flash is done and I have no idea why they didn't include it in this update. The only phone running it is the Nexus One (Google's baby lol). However the great news is that you can download it and put it on your DINC as I did. It will simply upgrade your current Adobe Flash. If you try to uninstall it will only let you uninstall the update not the beta default that was put on by the OTA Download it from your phone at this link. MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service. Again this is the FINAL OFFICIAL FLASH FOR ANDROID !!version 10.1.92.8 12.52 MB. Let me know how you guys make out.

Thanks for the link. Smooth like butter.

This is hinky -- it's like VCast mounts as a separate drive (Win7 sees it as a CD Drive??). I still get the phone storage and SD card to pop up, though.

I changed my Auto-play settings to "take no action" for games and software to prevent that drive from popping up in the future.

Camcorder also has an h.264 option for improved cross-device compatibility (but 720p is only available for MPEG-4, .3gp recording).

I have had that trouble too. Its quite annoying. Skype is the biggest offender on my list as i cant get it to stop for more that a few seconds. I have never even used Skype on my Dinc yet. I turned on auto-killer in my task manager and that has helped me save some battery. is there a way to remove some of these programs that i didn't install from the market? i can find them with Astro but it wont let me delete them.

I like the faster loading screen for the text messages. I don't know if anyone else had that issue but sometimes when i had more than a hundred text with a person it would take about five seconds to load a conversation.

There is lag between the new Droid intro and the sense taking off. not a big deal as i don't turn my phone off a lot.

I do hate the Verizon mobile thing that pops up every time I plug my phone into the computer. There should be an option to turn it off...

Other than that I have had it since Monday morning up here in northern Idaho.

Problems

Well I could not wait for the Verizon OTA update and I manually dowloaded the update from the forums here. I had no problems other than all of my ringtones went crazy and any specialized ringtone I had set up for a specific contact or alarm all got switched around. BUT.. All I had to do was just reassign them again and all is working great!! LOVE FROYO 2.2!!!
Hello all noob here w/android...
I had the above problem as well except even worse now can't get to the option to have the notifications/alarms that I had before. Overall running faster than before- my FB app refuses to give me notifications with a message about a parse error null'-' 64 something...
I seem to have more bloatware than previous and had to forcestop quite a few apps, moved what i was able to to my SD card and noticed battery life is worse than before.
My calendar added everything from FB plus what I had with google and its a jumbled up mess!!
:(:(:(:(

I've had that problem from the time I've got my droid, and still have to do forcestops several times a day!

WinXP doesn't give it as any drive. Even after installing VCast and it installing 7 drivers the drive will not show up by itself, only accessible as a device through VCast.

There has to be a file on the dinc now (sdcard or phone internal) that makes VCast pops up, but to find that file and get rid of it is the key I think.
