Froyo OTA: First Impressions

Help!

Hey guys I need some help! I have been patiently waiting and today the pop up came! I attempted to hit install now and nothing happened. Hit it a few more times and the pop up went away. How can I get it back? I went to the Verizon store and the guy showed me a link to download the Update.zip and I can't get that to work either! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Go to settings>about phone>system updates

I totally agree and that stupid city id, and peep and amazon mp3 and other bloatware UUGGGHHHHH:mad:

Ok, how do we root it so we can remove all this bloatware and get my wireless tether back.

It's quicker, i'll give them that. The 720p is nice. The call quality is better. I had the earlier leaked release, not sure if it is any different, might have to just revert back to it. I jumped the gun before I figured out if it was rootable.

Anyone?

Pattern is disabled for me, per security policy from the company. Also, I don't even know what pattern is. ;)

And looking around the interwebs, it seems LockPicker works for some people, but not others. Further, some people say it works, who downloaded it a long time ago and never updated it.

I'd imagine the developer will probably put out a new version eventually. I am trying No Lock now, we'll see if that works instead.
I've been using no lock for a few weeks and it works perfectly.

Tried No Lock, doesn't work. Uninstalled it. I'll just wait for one of the two apps to do a Froyo update, I'm sure one or both will.

Also, so far, this update is a pretty big fail for me. Didn't address any of the shortcomings I was dealing with (lack of control over what processes run, email folders not updating automatically), its noticeably slower now, and then the lock picker problem.

I am trying to figure out how to go back to 2.1.

i got my update today and im not impressed.
1. my phone did not boot up saying "droooiidd" the robot did appear but no droid sound
2. while previewing a song in the amazonmp3 app my phone froze (i didnt have to do a battery pull, just held down the power button and after 2 mins of waiting the phone booted up)
3. the supposed 720p recording didnt thrill me. i was hoping it had the same quality as my canon camera's 720p quality. but it was an improvement over the previous quality. it just didnt wow me

i did feel the internet speed was a tad faster. making my already pleasant browsing experience even better.
i like the added security features. im glad the default setting doesnt lock my phone immediately after turning screen off. being able to use pin numbers instead is great

as i play with the froyo update i hope not to find any problems

Newbie with Froyo heads up

Got the OTA pushed to me this am while phone was charging. Download occurred without issue. Install didn't work at all. Phone would not power down, so I unplugged it and it powered down and rebooted but no installation occurred. In fact Froyo can't be found on the phone despite successful download. Called Verizon and was told that update cannot occur while phone is charging due to power down and reboot issue. Wish I knew that earlier. Rep says he'll push me the update again but I'm put back into a queue. Anywhere from 10 min to 3-4 days. ARGGHH!

1. You won't hear DROOOOIIIID if your ringer volume is turned all the way down.

2. Haven't tried the Amazon app... no desire.

3. I think the 720p record quality is MUCH better than the original quality, and also much better than I would expect from a _phone_

I really haven't had any problems with the update, and am even happier with my phone now than I was with 2.1

I woke up to my OTA wanting to install. Took less than 15 minutes and the only issue is the apps that won't stay killed. I can't wait for someone to find a way to root it. So far it is faster and the new apps are cool. I wish we could have multiple Exchange acounts. I talked to HTC and they said that isn't coming anytime soon. I also wish I could subscribe to iCal Calendars.

My phone was 'charging' off of my laptop when I installed the update.zip file (which is available on this forum, btw - upgrade: SEE THE 'OTA' STICKY).
Didn't have a problem with the upgrade despite charging the phone.

I'd bet something else went wrong, and the rep just gave you a b.s. excuse. hehe

I have to wonder if it was just one of the standard reps when you get at the start of the call, or if they escalated the call to the actual tech department.

Yeah, the bloatware-zombie thing is obnoxious -- but be warned that even task killers that SAY they are Froyo compatible actually aren't. I'd say don't stress about the crap unless your battery actually takes a hit.<----- which mine has -- If it does, you can remove the crap by rooting (as soon as a root exploit is available for this build, which won't be long).

Great cause from what I'm reading, I can't root now that I'm onboard with 2.2 and didn't get the unrEVOked s-off prior... this is killing me!!! my poor phone has to have a charge nearly every 4 hours, BLOATWARE IS STUPID!!!

Got mine this AM. No problem except 4 hrs later it started playing "O Canada" out of the blue. Duh!!

How do I know if I have the updated market? I got the OTA last night and everything went smoothly. The market seems to look the same to me. I don't see any option to "update all"

first few days

My phone acted pretty weird after updating via update.zip. I installed handcent sms app and it started resetting all of my ringtones to some songs that i had recently listened to. I continued resetting the ringtones and they would change to whatever i had recently played until i deleted the app. Now everything works fine, the reason i deleted it before 2.2 was because of the error messages when sending mms messages. Now this, so i'm thinking there's some issues with the app since froyo that need addressed.

Also bluetooth voice dialing was not what i hoped for, i kept saying open calendar and it would just call different people who's names did not sound at all like "open calendar". If your phone locks or anything as well you have to unlock it before you can initiate a voice dial, that's at least what i encountered. At least it works when saying "call **** mobile" that's all i'm really concerned about. I just disable the lock setting to 5min and keep unlocking the phone with the swipe-down to keep it from locking so i can initiate a call, kinda lame.

@Wfp24: It let me select update all after it notified me of 3 updates at the same time. I don't think it's supposed to look different but you can make sure you have it if you go to downloads and select any app if it has the option to update app automatically, your golden buddy.

If you have to charge every 4 hours, you have something more going on than "bloatware." Streaming video for 4 hours over 3G shouldn't kill the battery. I'm guessing you need to adjust your accounts/sync frequency numbers, for starters. And maybe, just maybe, your task killer is draining the battery by continuously trying to kill processes that it cannot? You wouldn't be the first.

What does your up/awake time look like in Settings > About Phone > Battery?

I am not running a task killer, I have all the same bloatware that you do, my phone has been off-charger since 7:15am EST, and I am at 57 percent (2:55pm).

well peep doesn't work for me...bummer.

I don't think the problem with peep is Froyo related. Yesterday Twitter turned off basic authentication, it only allows Oauth now. They only announced the change A YEAR AGO!! but HTC apparently hasn't bothered to fix peep yet.
