Possibly. It is more likely another app causing it. Without knowing what apps you have installed it's kinda hard for us to help troubleshoot.

Try resetting app preferences:

Settings -> Apps
Tap the ellipse in the upper right and tap "Reset app preferences."

That resets all of your phone's apps back to default and may even log you out of them. It doesn't delete app data (at least I don't think it does).

After resetting app preferences, see what your S Pen does. If it behaves like it should, then start resetting up your apps and testing your S Pen after each one. It saves you having to do a factory reset.

When you first get the S24U, what is supposed to happen when you take out the s-pen for the first time. Please give me details.

If I remember correctly, it opens up Air Command by default. I then set mine to "Do nothing" in the S Pen settings.

When I check my S Pen settings, there are only three default settings for "When S Pen is removed." They are:

Open Air command
Create note
Do nothing

Pentastic allows you to change the style of the Air Command pop out and use either a premade sound or use a custom sound when the S Pen is removed.

Do you use any other "automation" apps other than Routines or Routines+ (part of Good Lock)? Like Tasker, or MacroDroid? Your descriptions seem to be an app created a custom routine to create a blank email when you pull out the S Pen. That in turn could be causing the crashing with the crossword puzzle app.

Are you using a third party or custom launcher (other than Nova or Microsoft Launchers)?

At this point, I am throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing if something sticks.

I use the stock launcher, but I do have Good Lock. I used it to remap the Bixby button so it becomes a google assistant button. If I uninstall the Good Lock app, will it automatically go back to being a Bixby button?

By "Bixby" button, I am presuming you mean the Side button. Probably. I also don't think it will resolve your S Pen issue though.

Any other automation apps like Tasker or MacroDroid?

Something is overiding what you have set for S Pen settings in the phone settings. The only thing I can think of is that it is a third party app that could cause that. Which in turn could be causing the Crosswords with friends game to crash when you attempt to use your S Pen.

Also in device care under diagnostics test your Spen and make sure your not using a magnetic case as this will cause issues
