Galaxy S3 battery drain problem

Here goes another thread for this problem, I am unsure how to solve it on my own so I will post screenshots of the android battery monitor and better battery stats apps. Hopefully someone can shed some light on what I need to do. I am running Jelly Bean 4.1.2 and most of the time at work and at home I have full LTE signal although I at home I use WI-FI.

Are you using the stock battery? If so, that looks like normal battery drain, actually pretty good drain.

The avg # of hours I was able to get on stock battery was about 10 to 12. So I'd be very happy with 9.5 hours and 45% left, about 16 to 18 total.

How many hours do you want/expect from a single charge?

Ya I am using the stock battery, I was hoping to get 13-15 hours so I could make through a full day. What battery do you suggest I buy? I would like to keep my otterbox defender if possible.

But your pic shows you've gone 9.5 hours and still have 45% left so you should get 13 hours. You could get a larger battery if you want more.

I would have to check but it seems when I the battery gets lower than 40% the battery drains really fast, faster than the usual rate, is that just me or is it are others experiencing this?

I don't think your battery drains any faster from 40% to 20% than it does from 80% to 60% - you probably just think that it does.

Actually its fastest drain section is from 100% to 90%, this is likely due to the normal drain curve on these phones, as well as from 10% to 0%, although not as steep as 100-90.

See this diagram I quickly made for a visualization, it is by no means accurate, but it describes what I've seen.



The normal, nominal, drain is from 90%-10%, where the battery is most efficient.

To see what's really happening (e.g., does the battery really drain faster when it gets lower), start over. Charge the phone to 100%, unplug it, and then use it normally. Take one set of screen shots at around 50%, and another when it's down to around 20-25%. This should let you compare. Remember that the battery will drain faster when you're on 4G than when on WiFi, which might account for what you're seeing. When you don't have a WiFi signal, remember to turn WiFi off so it's not draining the battery looking for a signal.

What does seem odd about your screen shots is that the screen has used 22% of your battery usage even though it's only been on for 38 minutes out of 9 hours of use. That seems excessive to me.

I am also having the exact same issue with my Samsung Galaxy S3 time to time. The device charges to 100% overnight. While using it gets hotter and in about 4 to 5 hours time all the juice gone. No GPS, no Wi-Fi, no downloads stuck in a loop, no running apps, and it runs with the minimum screen brightness. Restart didn't work, Restore works for short time, then the issue reappears.

Here is the solution that works for me every time when it happened so far.

Open the cover and Remove the battery out from the unit and leave it for about 30 minutes or so, and then reattached it to the device and charge fully. Now, again the device is good for two days! I have two exchange email accounts, two POP3 emails setup. It uses frequently in my job. This solution works for me.

I believe many NiCd and NiMH batteries have something called "Memory Effect". They gradually lose their maximum energy capacity if they are repeatedly recharged after being only partially discharged. The battery appears to "remember" the smaller capacity. By leaving the battery inactive for some time may tend to erase or re-set the memory. I am not an expert in this subject, but looks like this is what's happening with my battery. Hope you can also try and see what happens.

Your analysis might make sense except for the fact that these phones use Lithium Ion batteries (take a good look at the battery the next time you have it out).

Do you have the International version phone?
Have you used something like Wakelock Detector: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector or SystemPanel: http://market.android.com/details?id=nextapp.systempanel.r1 when the phone starts to get hot to see if you can identify any runaway processes?

Is the battery actually hot when you take it out, or is it the part of the phone just below the battery compartment?

You are right, it uses Lithium Ion battery. As a matter of fact, Memory effect also found in lithium-ion batteries. Anyhow, the simple solution I've listed above worked for my phone every time so far. Last week or so, the phone did not last for even 04/05 hours on a over-night full charge, but after resting the battery outside the unit for sometime and re-attaching it, charging back to 100% solved the issue. Again, this is not the first time I've experienced this. After doing this process yesterday, today my phone is up for 01 day and 04 hours and, still 45% juice remaining. (Screenshot is attached)
