Nope. Just don't proceed with factory reset. Just follow the instructions provided in the earlier part of this thread. Let me know your progress.

Re: Galaxy S3 Frozen on Samsung Start Screen after Software Update

Hi there!

Thank you for your awesome tutorial. I have successfully completed up to item 11. However at the firmware installation page when I tick the box that I understand or agree, the 'start upgrade' button is still greyed out. This is regardless of whether I allow to save or click 'proceed without saving' or sending info to samsung or whatever t wanted me to do.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 which has crashed after downloading the latest software update.
Also, after I put the phone in Odin mode and it was connected to the pc via a usb, it said 'Downloading... Do not turn off target!!!' for 5 hours without proceeding further. I thought if the firmware installation 'start upgrade' button was accessible, something might start happening?
If you're able to offer any insight or assistance I'd be most grateful!
:'(

Man, I just registered into this site to say thank you!

The steps worked like a charm, also I was ready to loose my data and I didn't.

Thank you very much!

Re: Galaxy S3 Frozen on Samsung Start Screen after Software Update

I GOT IT!!!!!. NO resetting at all. Actually it was an accident. This requires not losing anything. Well when your phone is plugged up and it let you know you are on the right update. Go to the top right and click BACKUP/RESTORE. even if you did not back anything up. Now check BACKUP. Sit and wait and your phone will pass it asking you to Next or RESTORE. You DO NOT have to press restore I didn't habe I have everything. Well it didn't let me check it. I just pressed next and it asked me who phone it was and I was back on track

Worked for me too! Thanks so much!!! Just note that for Galaxy I9300 its *I* the letter and not 1 the number. Its GT-I9300 and *NOT* GT-19300

Re: S3 Frozen on Samsung Start Screen after Software Update

Hi I've tried the above method and get to step 11 and it stops working after the firmware has fully downloaded. It tried to upload on to phone but this is what happens: Capture.JPG

Please any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Re: S3 Frozen on Samsung Start Screen after Software Update

Hi, I am now currently stuck on the firmware initialization. I have done everything that you have told me but it wont start upgrading

Finally, the solution! I made use of Samsung Kies. Here's what I did:

1. Install Samsung Kies in your computer if you don't have. (You may have to choose between Kies or Kies3. Kindly check Samsung website)
2. Connect your device to computer.
3. Turn on your device. As with our case, it will get stuck in the splash screen logo.
4. Press Volume Down + Home button + Power button. Hold it for some time until the ODIN screen is displayed. (The one with green Android character and it says "Downloading... Do not turn off the target!!")
5. Launch Samsung Kies.
6. Ignore if you see some prompts that say your device is unrecognized.
7. Go to Tool > Firmware upgrade and Initialisation
8. Enter your device's model name. (Ex: GT-I9300). Be aware of the uppercase letters.
9. Click OK.
10. Enter your S/N the click OK.
11. Then follow the succeeding instructions as it will now direct you to downloading your firmware.
12. Just wait until it's done and auto-upgrade with your device shall commence.
13. Then whoala! Welcome your device back!

This works for me. I have Galaxy S3.

Hope this helps!

Same problem here. Before I try, can you just clarify if this will erase all data and apps?

Sorry Monares, just saw that you answered that.

"4. Press Volume Down + Home button + Power button. Hold it for some time until the ODIN screen is displayed. (The one with green Android character and it says "Downloading... Do not turn off the target!!")"

At this step, I also get the Download Custom OS Screen instead of ODIN screen. Any ideas on how I get past that?

Hi

I had the same problem with the "start upgrade" button not active. However I left it running for a couple of hours and it then recognized the device and the button was not greyed out anymore. So you just need to give the machine some time to recognize the device and the button becomes active. Everything else worked fine and I did not lose any of my data.
