Galaxy S5 And Lag... Does It Or Doesn't It???

If you compare it to a AOSP rom you will find that its most definitely slower. You don't realize how much Touchwiz taxes the system until you compare them side by side. I took my Galaxy S3 to the Samsung store with a SlimRom AOSP Rom, compared it to the S4, everything on my phone worked smoother and faster! the apps opened quicker, camera worked quicker. The overall phone is just smoother, you have no monster ui taxing the system! now if your the type that needs all the gimmickry, then by all means this is a great phone, but you'll never know the true potential of the phone until you get rid of touchwiz! and using a launcher doesn't do that, all a launcher does is change the sesame street look of the phone. If you need a phone that you can swipe down the crack of your A#s and get your body temperature, then baby, touchwiz is your puppy!! But if you want a smooth operating phone that just works...then look for a google play edtion or put a custom rom on your phone, I have and have never looked back, it would be a snowing day in hot place before i could ever go back to touchwiz.
How were you able to flash a custom rom? From what I read, you cannot do that with 4.3/4.4 even with safestrap.

I didn't upgrade my S3 to 4.3, but my son's is and you can root and flash roms, just have to eliminate knox, and that's simple.

Re: S5 And Lag... Does It Or Doesn't It???

i got lag before sometimes and had to reboot it, but as this is my first smart phone I assumed hittin the back button closed apps/whatever. It was not till I got battery doctor I realized all the stuff I've opened was still opened. now I can just hit the window button to slide them out and there's no lag.

I use the thing more than my pc now with texting hundreds of times a day and playing facebook games and other things which I thought was the issue but it was having like 500 things opened I thought were closed.

as mentioned with the developer settings (found a video on youtube the other day for that lol) you can tone down the animation which will let you scroll a billion icons so fast it's impossibel to see them.

the only thing I've heard about the s5 that was true is some people got camera errors which was a small amount and many fixes posted about it.

The lag does happen to some people and I'll tell you why.

Here's my story. Bought an s5 at T-mobile. Noticed that the glowing back arrow on mine was a bit 'blacked out' on it. No problem, I think. A mere manufacturers defect I can live with. The speakerphone also was lousy on it--people tell me I sound muffled and couldn't seem to hear me.

Many days later of using the phone, it has been laggy since day one. I'm talking inexcusable lag. I had turned everything off, animations and all that jazz. This lag also includes bad keyboard lag and general lag you'd think you'd see with touch wiz right? Wrong.

Irked, I took it back under their 14 day return policy, to get a completely new unit. They try to scam me back saying they'd send me one in the mail, and just to send my current one back. I ask if that means it's refurbished. He says, at this point, it is impossible to get a new one. I Just bought a New phone. I cite my 14 day return policy and refuse to budge. He has no choice but to relent ( beware of that at t-mobile, they will try to kick in the manufacture warranty instead of letting you use your 14 day, but you have consumer rights so don't fall for it as you have the right to a new unit) and he finally provides me a new unit.

It's perfect. No lag, no weird black thing under the light up keys and to reiterate--No lag. The first unit was made in April. This second is from mid May. I would watch out. It seems there is a lack of quality control for these units. T-Mobiles are made in China and others have theirs from Vietnam and Korea (typically AT&T does). If you end up with a laggy unit, it not gonna get better. Don't walk - - run back to your store and get a NEW replacement until you are satisfied. You have a right. This thing costs a lot!

I also could never find the serial number information out about my phone. It's like it didn't exist. Called Samsung and they didn't know either.

Watch out with this one guys as it seems hit and miss!

I've pretty much put mine down to the fact that I have power saving mode on 24/7 and it reduces CPU power. If I turn off power saving, it quits.

Are u using a SD card? I unplugged my SD card and Kaboom... everything works as expected!

That I am. But can't afford to remove it. There are a lot of times where I get stuck somewhere when I can listen to music to pass time. I reserve my on board storage for what the phone does :) besides, it only does it once in a great while anymore.

Having come from the M7 this thing is lightning fast. I barely got it yesterday but I've already logged into all my stuff, added all my numbers manually to get to know the feel, done a bunch of stuff really and have yet to experience a single bad thing. I couldn't say the same for my M7 though and that honestly does make me sad because it was a great phone and I had a lot of memories with it but it just made my life so miserable at times.

Back to the topic though...this S5 is really just out of this world for me. Not one single glitch yet KNOCK ON WOOD.

So I didn't knock on wood soon enough. My phone lags with incoming phone calls. It will begin a vibrating. Then ringing. And then the screen will turn on. Sometimes the screen won't turn on at all and I have to power button it to be able to answer. Damn it

Yes! Mine does this crap too! It takes forever for me to answer a phone call.

I have had the galaxy s5 for about a month now, so I feel I can weigh in on this. For me i experience no lag EXCEPT when using the multitasking button. For some reason it seems to take a second for the app Windows to come up and also switching between them takes a second. That's my only gripe with this entire phone.

I experienced screen lag a few weeks after getting my S5. What I noticed after peeking around my phone a bit was that I had Power Saving Mode automatically enabled. By default, PSM will turn on automatically when the S5 reaches 20% (or was it 30%) battery. What it doesn't tell you is that it will restrict performance at any battery level. My phone is currently at 86% and I have just turned on PSM. The screen frame rate has dropped drastically.

I ended up just turning off PSM altogether, electing to turn it on manually when I really need it. Alternatively, you can uncheck the "Screen output" option under restrict performance settings.

I've had mine for a few months now and the only two places I've taken notice of lag is going into the gallery app and sometimes swiping to answer a call. The gallery app always takes a second to open and there have been times I'd thought I didn't tap it and tapped it again only for it to go into one of my pic folders and I have to back out one. Not really that big a deal and now I know it just takes a sec so I don't tap twice. The phone answering thing is quite annoying though and it's VERY random. Sometimes I get a call, pull it out of my case and swipe to answer and nothing. Swipe again, nothing. Then I just swipe like mad and it answers. Haven't missed a call yet but they seriously need to fix that. Odd thing is if I call myself and test it works perfectly every time, so it's an occasional thing. I set my home button to answer calls as well so if I get that annoying problem after answering late into the ring I can just hit the home button to answer. Outside of those two I haven't noticed any other lag.

You need to have phone next to it to tell if there is lag or not.

My brother is a huge Android advocate and he has a GPe HTC One M7. Recently his company gave him an S5 and he compared the two and found the S5 to be laggy. When you press a bottom it takes a bit to respond.

He had to root the phone and disable 100 Samsung/google applications to make it run smoothly.

I have a Verizon S3. I had to root it and eliminate 50 applications to make it decent to use. It still lags my 2012 iPhone 5 even though both are dual core and the S3 has double the ram.

TW is just a very heavy overlay that makes the base Android UI laggy. I really doubt that Google ever intended any overlay to be as heavy as TW.

I wouldn't say the phone lags, but I can say that it doesn't run very smooth.
you can feel that it is much slower than other flagship (I have both the S5 and the G3), but that's all TouchWiz I guess.

Yes, it stutters like crazy, especially in the homescreen and app drawer. It's unbelievable. It stutters more than an S4. It's just not a 60 FPS experience.

And opening Recent apps is slow. And I thought Touchwiz lag was overrated.

I barely notice it. I mean its there but it doesn't interfere with my experience in the slightest. I'm extremely observant and annoyed by this stuff and it still doesn't bother me.

To each their own though.

My phone doesnt lag at all. Only when i have many cpu intensive apps or games running... ya'll should install clean master or DU Speed Booster. Keeps my phone running like new:)

It's bad. No apps running in Active apps, and switching app pages/drawers is laggy. This is with all animations disabled, 20 stock apps disabled and running on ART.

It drives me batty. Also, running Chrome, trying to load a simple size like ZDNet.com and then trying to scroll, it hangs, then lurches and hangs. I hate the browsing experience. It's almost as though the GPU driver has been disabled and it's having to do software (CPU) rendering.
