Galaxy S5: Huge disappointment, Samsung TOTALLY dropped the ball!

I'm not saying it's useless. Just redundant since the hardware (camera+LED) was already fully capable of working as an HRM.

I'm sure that the billion dollar tech company knows what they are doing and has a reason for this decision.

Why not? It may be dumb to you, because people who live active lifestyles may find this useful.

Why add speakers to the front? Most people use headphones when they play videos and music

Except that unlike the heart rate monitor feature, I can't retroactively install an app which enables front speakers if I want that feature later on.

What exactly is the value add here of said feature compared to the other similar apps found on the play store?

But it's nice to have it built in all the same. I know there are apps available. I've been using one myself for well over a year. I'd prefer to have it built into the hardware and integrated into S-health.

And for those saying what's the point. It is important. It's one of the 5 vital signs. As a trainee nurse I regularly record people's pulses.

I'd prefer my nurse to use a dedicated device rather than a cell phone, but if said nurse was off work and say at the mall and somebody had a medical emergency I could see where this would be realy great.

But the front facing speakers? Just buy a bluetooth speaker.

Maybe medilog (or merk or phiser) should make a health professionals phone. Seems like there could be demand.

Well actually the best way to check a pulse is to do it manually with your fingers over 60 seconds. Apart from the potential to be erroneous, machines don't tell you anything about the rhythm or strength of the pulse. I don't know how accurate the S5 is or any of the apps. However the importance of taking a pulse cannot be underestimated.

The speakers on the S4/note 3 aren't bad at all. So I'd imagine that the S5's would be just as good or better. But yeah just use a Bluetooth speaker.

+1 (I'm not in the HTC forum, so I'll refrain from saying +One. Lol)

I can't stress enough that while I can see a point to front facing speakers, as much as I like them when using a Moga for gaming or even resting on a table for my friends and I to listen to music. My wife's HTC One seems no louder then my S4, especially since the volume on the HTC one was lowered to prevent blown speakers.

I also have constantly aimed speakers to tables, walls or other objects in order to bounce the sound to help it get even louder or more full on sound. If using a kickstand on a table, or with normal use in the hand, the speaker placement on the S4 is perfect for doing such, and thus 3 out of 5 times seems louder than my wife's HTC One at this time.

With that said, I can't stress enough how much better a bluetooth speaker is when gaming or playing music with your friends.

Your not thinking of this in the right way if you think there's a value add specifically for you, this is something that they can market and show off in commercials and get new customers to buy their phone, you may know that there are similar apps that can do hrm,but the vast majority doesn't.

And also, who is to say that those apps are as good or accurate as the samsung one?

Those apps also won't integrate with S-health or work in conjunction with the grear/fit if you have one.

You can take that argument with everything. Before panorama mode was built into cameras there were apps, just as there were apps to allow you to zoom before that was built in.

Before my original galaxy note was updated to include to floating video function, I used an app called pop up video. It wasn't anywhere near as good as the software enabled function. On my iPad I have a few apps that allow me to run two apps at the same time. Again they are nowhere near as good as the multi window function on my galaxy note 3.

It's all marketing , you can sell someone on a hrm in a commercial,it doesn't matter whether or not it integrates into the s health app

Not really. Compare to the G2 which was released in September, and being nearly six months old would be considered "old tech" by some.
Processor running at 2.5 vs 2.3, not a big difference.
16 mp camera vs 13 mp on G2,again not a big improvement.
Smaller battery than G2. 2800 vs 3000.
Same amount of ram as G2.
Most importantly to me, SMALLER screen in a LARGER form factor than the G2.

I was really looking forward to giving the S5 a try, but Samsung failed to give me a good reason to step away from the G2. A fingerprint scanner is not enough motivation.

The water resistance is important to me; finally i don't have to worry about the phone if i drop it in the sink or something. Not that i have ever done that, but its nice to know that its safe. Also i can take it to Vegas and have it in my pocket at the pool parties and stuff, without getting a waterproof bag/case. The bezels are big cause of the water resistance. I think to have a bigger battery, the phone would have to be note 3 sized...i think 2800 was the best they could shove in there with it still being able to have a removable back. The camera tech looks better on the S5 than the G2 but again we'll have to see the reviews to see if it pans out. If LG can bring out a G3 with water resistance, finger print scanner, etc..i might just go for that...

As unattractive as the S5 is, this is probably a good generation of phones to buy. The next generation will be 64 bit and will have some teething pains.

In the past, I have been an early adopter of multiple smartphones being a convert from BlackBerry. My first Android device was the GS3 and I upgraded as an early GS4 adopter but I am a bit ambivalent at this point having just upgraded to Kit Kat. I got caught up in the rumored specs and hype as well. I think that we all need to take a breath and wait for more feedback when the GS5 is actually released. I am planning to go to the store this time and give the GS5 a try instead of pre-ordering. I would advise this to any GS4 owners like me before passing judgement on a device that you haven't even tested or used. Being able to see reviews with the final versions of the carrier skins and TouchWiz in advance may sway my decision.

Even if you haven't tested or used it,is it really worth upgrading from the 4? Even myself, an s3 user doesn't think it's enough and I am willing to hold out to see what other devices later in the year have to offer .

It sure has some improvements that I like, but at least from my prospective, it's just not quite enough to make me want to consider upgrading to it, when it will almost undoubtedly be trumped within months by other devices .

I love new phone season lol. Always wondering what phone will be the years standout as it seems one always trumps the rest. For me it was the One last year. Then the G2 came out with killer specs later in the year.

I'd say that for many users there are already a half a dozen or so other devices for sale today that are better, depending on what their preferences are. In some categories Samsung brings it hard (camera) and in others, they're fairly terrible. There isn't one device to rule them all, but if there was, I'd say this isn't in the running for it - however, I haven't used it yet, and so everything is based on early reviews of pre-production software. Based only on what I know today, the LG G2, Nexus 5, Moto X, 2013 HTC One, LG Optimus G Pro and iPhone 5s are easily in the same league as the S5, if not above it for many users. I don't see anything "bad" about the S5 and it's a huge improvement over the S4 in my opinion.

If you are on Verizon, beware that the one doesn't have aws. In high network load areas, the s5 with aws may provide better network performance, assuming aws is deployed there.

Aws was the main reason performance reason I got my note 3. Better connectivity is well worth it for me. Of note, the s4 also had aws, in case anyone was wondering as well as the g2 and x
