Galaxy S5: Huge disappointment, Samsung TOTALLY dropped the ball!

I actually think the heart rate monitor is a great feature, I use my phone for not only music while I jog but also to track my route, time, and distance, I often times check my heart rate after I finish a run

It will be interesting to see how accurate it is, considering that there are free heartrate monitoring apps for iOS that can be downloaded cheaply or even for free.

Something like monitoring your heartbeat seems like the sort of feature better implementing in a bracelet which you wear 24/7. The results can then be stored on your smartphone (transmitted via Bluetooth) and you can view the trend as a graph or chart.

I dunno, in this age of always-on sensors, having to manually activate such a feature actually seems like a step backwards.

They have had them (HR apps) in the Google play store as well.

The HR sensor is nothing new. It's just another feature Samsung can add to the spec sheet. It uses the same exact method as the apps that have been available in the Appstore and Play store except you can't uninstall it. I'm just waiting for a toothpaste dispenser.

You can literally make this argument about anything .

Why include a messaging app when you can download one from the play store? Same thing for the dialer, camera app,etc

People buy phones for the apps and features that coke with it.

Manufactures need something that makes you want to purchase the device, or you would go to another manufacturer

But the previous gen phone was already capable of reading your heart rate. Why add an extra LED light when the flash and camera could already do this. Adding redundant hardware is just plane dumb. Why couldn't they add something that wasn't on the phone like maybe OIS or stabilization when shooting 4K video? Why couldn't they place the speaker in the front?

How do you know? Have you tried using the device yet? I have used HRM apps on my S3 and it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. Its also more of a software HRM rather than hardware like what the S5 will have. I rather have a device that continually monitors my heart as I'm moving. I personally think (Hope!) that it will all be integrated pretty tightly especially if you have the Gear 2 or Fit which are HRM's as well! I Know I would be very excited to try it out since I would have extensive use for it with my weekly cardio training!

Why not? It may be dumb to you, because people who live active lifestyles may find this useful.

Why add speakers to the front? Most people use headphones when they play videos and music

I know the tech it uses to get your heart rate. The method is used in hospitals with the little gadget that clips to your finger with a bright red light in it. It basically measures the change in color of your finger using the bright LED. That change in color is the blood pumping in and out of your finger. With the phone, you have to hold your finger as still as possible to get an accurate reading. You will not be able to monitor your heart rate during exercise unless the S5 has ANT+ built in which was never mentioned or anywhere in the specs.

Read my comment again. It was already capable of reading HR with the previous hardware.

How do you know "most people" use headphones while playing videos and music? Did you take a poll or are you just assuming? It's well documented that front speakers sound better and is more practical. Do you have your car speakers facing into the door panels or towards the inside of the car cabin? Please use common sense.

Yes the 'sofware' (app) uses the 'camera' (pics/vids/scanner mainly) as the monitor.

The S5 will use a 'Monitor' (sensor) rather than a 'camera' to get your Heart rate.

Also, why would you need an Antenna when you have bluetooth?? Bluetooth will tightly integrate these 'Monitors' within these devices (S5, Gear 2 and Fit).

.....am I wrong or does Fr0gburp3r not understand how this works?

How many people have you seen walking around blasting music out of their phones ? Now contrast that with all the people you see wearing those big over the ear beats headphones

Front facing speakers may sound better ,but it's not a useful area for a top of the food chain manufacturer like Samsung to focus on. Front facing speakers is not a selling point for consumers,or else htc might have had a lot more success with the one .

It's a pretty useless area ,and it's not necessary.

And to your last question, does your phone have wheels? I don't think so, because it's not a car. Bad analogy

Did you not understand what I just explained how it reads a heart rate? I can't explain it any simpler. It does the same exact thing the flash and camera does. Please stop drinking the coolaid. Let me guess, It's special because Samsung put it on the phone.

Fr0gburp3r, the monitor in the S5 will be like having a dedicated HRM like a Polar or Garmin (et al) already installed in it.

It's common sense. You don't ever face speakers away from you. Do you where your headphone facing your ears or away? LOL

Doesn't matter, I use headphones, like normal people , wherever the speakers are on your device is irrelevant, because no one plays anything through their phone, unless their intent is to annoy those around them with their garbage .
