Galaxy S5: Huge disappointment, Samsung TOTALLY dropped the ball!

I think part of it is, is the mobile market is about utility right now. We haven't reached a point were a luxury phone is truly desired yet.

Once market saturation really hits and it hasn't yet. Companies will look for ways to differentiate themselves.

I haven't bought a smart watch yet because I haven't found one with all the features I want or like.

But I keep eyeing this swatch because I love the looks of it.

Do I think it is premium vs another watch. Not really, but it has dials and it is blue, two of my favorite things.

And that is how smartphones right now should be looked at because the truth is, none of them are really premium.

But this is relative, is it not? The premium feeling is only really elicited once you know something else (and in all likelihood, that something else is not premium). For example, holding and using a Galaxy Nexus and then holding and using an HTC One comprises two entirely different experiences and emotional reactions. But you would not necessarily "know" that feeling without having seen something else. Hence, it's all relative.

That Swatch evokes no emotional response for me, yet my Seiko Monster does. Is the Swatch any more premium than my Seiko? That I do not know. But I do know that something like an Audemars Piguet is.

The utility issue is correct, but don't discount how many different entities have their hands in the mobile phone pot. Not only do you have manufacturers (hardware), but you have software companies (Android/Microsoft, not Apple since their software is exclusive to their hardware), carriers, government regulators, and even retailers. Those constraints simply do not exist in most luxury markets.

The problem is that people want to be able to assign a quantitative number to "feel". Like it can be mathematically defined. It can't, and it's not always an easy concept to try and explain.

The only number one can truly assign to premium is the number you'd trade for that item. That's it.

Re: Huge disappointment, Samsung TOTALLY dropped the ball!

I have an SD card on my S3 and I know EXACTLY where things go. I also root my device and can bring it back to a state that doesn't void my warranty. I guess some people don't want to worry about these things. There are other devices that are easier for the end user.

So we're going to vague personal attacks? I have an S4, but won't be getting another Samsung after this. I got it before I knew this non-sense was on it. You know exactly where your data goes yes, but can you move *every* app to the SD? Can you remove the Eye-Tracking completely? When did you root, as rooting after 4.3 trips the KNOX flag in a way that Triangle Away doesn't resolve, so I don't know how you're planning on returning without that tripped.

I'd agree more with the "don't want to worry about these things", if I wanted a device that tried to fight me from using it how I wanted (explain why I need to *root* to remove TripAdvisor), I'd get an iPhone.

I'm glad I'm not using my iDevices in a way that they try to fight me.

Not at all! The way I use my device is quite simple. I keep my apps and app data on my internal storage. I keep my big media files (video, music, etc..) on my sd card. I find this to be the easiest way to manage everything on my device. The only way you can remove the eye tracking would be to root your device. Why would you want to remove it though? I did not update to 4.3 because of Knox. I stayed on 4.1.2. I'm currently on Wicked Sensations (4.3) rom. I have no idea why you would need root to remove TripAdvisor. Isn't that an app?! I like TripAdvisor but I use their service on my laptop/pc....better for picture viewing than my devices small screen.

Right, that way works to manage them. I don't have many big files, but my point is that they sprung the storage usage thing on me, as I didn't know it before I got my S4 (I got it launch day). I'd want to remove it to save space, also because it's non-sense garbage, but mainly one word, "glasses". Right, I can't remove *an*app* without rooting it. I went to 4.3 because the only features I like in stock are multi-window and the folio case. I keep a stock rom mainly, but I shouldn't have to root to remove *any* app (apart from maybe stock apps). I have Xposed modules to tweak things though.

Carrier added garbage are stock apps [in a way].
Phones come root blocked because carriers order them that way.
Therefore if you want to get rid of carrier garbage you must root.
Cuz to them it is not garbage.

But I agree.

But id root anyways

I'm with you that the added stuff that carriers and OEMs add can be useless but to some, they are not. Every OEM and carrier will unfortunately add these apps to our devices. I will be disabling them with future devices since I don't feel the need to root no longer. Stock has served me well on my S3...well, until 4.3 came out at least. I didn't want to lose my option to root my device. Rooting my device has been more of a pain than being on stock unfortunately.

Sometimes this is true, but if memory serves the s3 is simple to root. Odin recovery, wipe, flash rom.
Correct me if I am wrong.

Yes it was, up until 4.3 at least. Knox has been causing havoc for people who want to root. Also, what I meant by my last sentence was that my root 'experience' has been a pain, not that it was a pain to root. Been through a lot of roms and the majority of them have had faulty this and broken that for my use. I actually preferred being on stock than a custom rom on my S3 believe it or not!

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is not a huge improvement, but the upcoming smartphone has some nice features. The Download Booster is something that might be quite beneficial, I hope its not some gimmick and really something effective.

However, I plan on buying a white Galaxy S5 on its launch day.

Since I have a flip phone at the moment while I wait for the GS5 to arrive (sold my other phone already) its an upgrade in many ways for me.

Nice! I still have 2 Sanyo phones and 1 Samsung A900 ready to go! I did 5 YEARS with the A900.....miss that phone....lol!

I don't like only having "disable" as an option though. I want to be able to remove apps entirely. As in I don't want TripAdvisor/FlipBoard or any of the other crap. Why can't I uninstall? Why did they have to pass a law to make Samsung allow me to remove it? I understand some of it is baked in to the ROM, but I get Titanium just to get all the Samsung garbage out. I mean, I even removed Touchwiz, as I hate it (and feel whoever said that water drop should be on for *every* press by default should be made to listen to Vogon poetry). The only things that I have on my "stock" rom that are from Samsung (apart from basic things like Browser/Settings/Messages/Phone) are Multi-Window, the notification bar (tweaked to show 8 icons because 4 is very useful...), and the PeelRemote app (Titaniumed to disable *everything* but the remote control features, don't have cable nor OTA, so I gutted 99% of it).

Just my setup, but I guess my point is I wouldn't go near a Galaxy device because I've had to do this much work just for Multi-Window and the Infra-Red Remote.

Just get a nexus

...or a Moto G/X

The Nexus is the plan, after I see what HTC does, as I like some of the M8's features. I like Zoe's, and it seems easier to remove apps I don't want. I was really looking at the Moto X for the Moto Assist, but that was before the buyout. Also, on Sprint, and the N5 has Sprint Spark, and the Moto X doesn't.
