Galaxy S6 USB connection trouble with Windows 10

I had the same issue. Look at the steps to resolve the issue.
Step 1: Download and install Smart switch from Samsung
Step 2: Select MTP and ADB on your device and reboot
Step 3: Restart your PC
Step 4: Connect your device to the PC using multiple USB cables. ( If charging cable from Samsung doesn't do the trick)
Step 5: voila!!!! Start transferring files

How many times do I have to repeat myself on these forums? WINDOWS 10 IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE S6 (at least not with Samsung computers which is darkly ironic). Trying work-arounds like Smart Switch and Kies won't work. You are wasting your time. Read USAFRetired's post on this forum - he hit the nail on the head.

I don't use the OEM cable and it works fine.

Dec 2015 I purchased a new HP laptop and had my Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge replaced. I also purchased 2 OEM cables from a Samsung store.
Now after 2 months talking to Samsung, Microsoft and HP, I haven't been able to get a stable connection just like thousands of other customers! I've also tried a few non OEM cables and they were worse...?
On Microsoft Community I see that the posts start Aug 2015 so this issue is well overdue to be resolved!

I wouldn't have believed this if I didn't try it. I was using a standard cable and Windows 10 was connecting/disconnecting my device endlessly, rarely staying connected long enough to do anything. When I started using the cable that came with my S6 (and unlocked the device) all has been working fine since. That was the case for an S6 and an S6 Edge. Prior to this I tried everything else people have been suggesting with no luck.

Ok the OEM cable worked a few times (although not perfectly), but two things that have worked perfectly for me now ... "File Manager HD" has an option to make the device available through your wireless network, and the second a USB drive that has the ability to also plug into my phone. In my case the "USB 3.0 SUPER SPEED MOBILE OTG DRIVE" by Monster. Neither fixes the actual problem, but both have helped me bypass it and stop wasting time trying to fix it.

Try this solution: worked for me and my friend.

Win 10 didn't give me access to both my galaxy s7 and s4.

The only thing I had to do was :


win + R -> regedit
HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SYSTEM --> CurrentControlset --> Control --> Class --> {EEC5AD98-8080-425F-922A-DABF3DE3F69A}

delete upperFilter



After this I tried starting Smart switch (before didn't work), he recognized my phone, the program installed stuff. Now both my phone works on win 10.


Try the regit solution, after install Smart Switch ( you can uninstall later if don't like the software) and you Galaxy should be work with win 10.

Precisely why I remain on Windows 7 - Windows 10 does NOT come with all the drivers you need and your computer manufacturer probably hasn't got them either.

You have to use the oem USB cable

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT FIXED THE PROBLEM !!!! I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY MOST OF THE CABLES WOULD'NT WORK BUT WHEN I USED THE PHONE'S CABLE IT WORKED. Thanks 20blks FOR SOLUTION !!!

Thank you "Barbara From Boston". The "net ..." command worked perfectly. I was getting "unrecognized" error; now it connects as a drive.

I tried a number of these ideas but the one that worked was changing my USB cable. Not the one that came with the phone but another one. Go figure.

There is a simple fix for non-connecting Galaxy S6 and Win 10. Go into "Settings"... "Developer Options"... Then change "USB Configuration" from "Charging" to "MTP" (Media Transfer Protocol). It connects immediately. You may have to do this every time you connect but it's quick.

@farnal: Wow -- THANK YOU. After reviewing all the previous comments from the past few weeks/months, I came yours, posted just earlier today, and this solved my problem!

In my case, I had just upgraded my Verizon Galaxy S6 this morning to Marshmallow and after that my PC would no longer recognize that my device was even connected. It appears to be that Marshmallow has new USB-connection settings, including one that is simply a passive "Charging" setting and apparently that's the default (I haven't verified this, but it appears to be the case). Setting that to MTP fixed the problem.

I'm HAPPY now .

@Barry Holroyd: You're welcome. I know exactly how you felt. I was discouraged because there were so many complicated attempts being offered and none of them worked. I should have remembered "Occam's Razor"... the principle that the simplest explanation is often the best.

I found the Samsung white USB cable that came with the charger works fine. Some of my other USB cables don't and some do. Phone must be unlocked. After connecting USB, drag down the notices menu at the top of the home screen. You will see "USB connected for charging, touch for other USB options". When you touch, a menu comes up and you can select Transferring Media Files and you will then see your phone recognized on your computer. Windows 10 will ask how you want to transfer the files to. This worked for me. It needs to be done every time you connect the phone via USB. I have a Gateway desktop that's about 9yrs old.

You can find settings on your phone in the app drawer.

If you do not have Developer options showing near the bottom of the page. Tap About and the tap Build Number 7 times. Go back to Settings and Developer Options should be near the bottom of the page. Tap it and scroll down to USB Configuration. If it does not change when you tap on MTP, then long press on it and it should change the setting. It will still charge after making the change.
