Honestly, if you ain't running CM7.1, you ain't experienced all the Thunderbolt can give you yet. It's a dream experience, true Android as it was meant to be. And it flies... I mean it FLIES.
Its completely stable, great battery life, no 4G/3G radio problems. Wifi works awesome. The ONLY hiccup right now is satellite GPS which will be fixed in time. I won't say soon, but I anticipate some work on it in the next RC.
I don't even think official Gingerbread will do anything for most people. The update tonight is what the stockies really want. A fix to reboot problems. The average person who runs stock and is whining about this reboot issue (I only had 1 random reboot, ever) wouldn't even tell the difference between Froyo and Gingerbread if it came up and hit them in the face. It's that subtle.
On another note however, coming from a Droid X this whole updating process feels all too familiar. Hey look at the Droid X, the greatest device from Motorola. It can do flash content on the web isn't that cool guys? But wait you won't get that out of the box. You need 2.2 first. Don't get too sad just yet, we promise 2.2 to be on your device by the end of the summer! (<2 weeks later Droid 2 is launched, with Froyo) ok guys we know you were supposed to be the ones to get flash officially, but hey look here's a Droid 2! IT DOES FLASH! DROID DOES DERP.
^ This is how the game works. It's a business, making and selling phones. If HTC (and believe me when I say HTC is GREAT compared to Sammy + Moto) and Verizon were all about slapping you silly with the newest updates from Google, they'd do it. But instead they choose to deliberately take their time. A lot of people will claim its for Quality Assurance. Really? Let me just point you in the direction of MR1. It's about making money people. It always was and it always will be. You want updates, and you want them fast? Get rooting and play the Android game the right way. You want to run stock and tread softly, enjoy your waiting game and sitting on issues that are already resolved by community developers.
