Go to a Verizon store? Post your thoughts here!

I never should have read this thread. Now, I want to cancel my order and get a Note8. No, I didn't get a panda so it won't help any of you lol.

Re: Hands on at Verizon

So are you tending to agree with the others that have seen both side by side and feel the display on the pixel 2 looks better than the 2XL?? I am really shocked that numerous people have said the xl 2 is not premium feeling and has blueish viewing angles. I just find it odd that a 6.0 display doesn't look as good as a 5.0 1080p display...

It should be noted that SOME of the others feel the XL's screen is not as good...

I finally gave in and went to a local Verizon store shortly before lunch. I spent quite a bit of time with the XL and the V30 and am torn between them. Is there a blueish tint? Yes, when tilting the phone fully forward. But... not when looking at the screen straight on (like you normally do when using it). Same is true on both the Pixel 2 XL and the V30 so I'm sure it's part of the panel tech and no big deal. I look at my screen straight on. BOTH phones felt great in the hand. Much more comfortable than the Note 8. As an aside, the Verizon rep tried talking me into a Note 8 like he'd just bought. When I demonstrated the lag on the Note, he was like.. 'gee, thanks. I'd never noticed before but now I see it. Dang.'.

So for me the real question is the pure simplicity and quick upgrades on the Pixel 2 Xl or the added features (HQ DAC, headphone jack, dual cameras with wide angle shooting, wireless charging, slightly higher rated water and dust resistance, additional customization features in the UI and, extended 2-year warranty) on the V30.

I'm in the EXACT same boat. Preordered a Pixel 2 XL, but still on the fence.

Way to rain on that guy's Note 8 parade :)

I'm opting for simplicity and quick updates (and the option to move to Fi). My opinion on the added features:

- DAC, nice to have but I use either BT or Android Auto for 100% of my audio. Don't you need high-impedance headphones to make full use of this feature? If so, not a super important feature.
- headphone jack - see above.
- dual cameras - a wide-angle camera would be pretty awesome
- wireless charging - I've had several Qi-enabled devices and never used the feature despite having multiple Qi mats around the house. Too finicky and slow
- better IP rating - great feature
- UI customizations - I don't like LG's take on an Android skin. For UI, I prefer to roll my own with Nova and KLWP
- 2 year warranty - with the right credit card, you might be able to match this coverage

The V30 looks like a great device but the additional features can't compare to the pure Android experience and quick updates of the Pixels.

In hand today and surprised at how light the XL felt in the hand next to my 6P tank. I took no issue with the speakers that were plenty loud enough, nor did I have any issue with the screen.I, not like some others, enjoyed the feel of the screen edge with the 3D glass too. The only thing that seemed weird to me was the feeling of the finish, but I usually use a clear case or skins anyway. The launcher was very responsive and fluid and launching apps was uber quick. I am more excited now than ever though, especially after trying out the camera! C'mon Google, surprise us all with earlier ship dates!!!(doubtful, but I can dream right?)

SO I went to Verizon today and compared my Pixel XL to the Pixel 2 XL

Ok im just going to post my random thoughts comparing my Pixel XL to the Pixel 2 and 2 XL

- the pixel XL has a slightly warmer tone to the screen than the Pixel 2 XL, i would not notice unless they were side by side
- the 2xl off-axis does present a blue tint especially if the screen is white. In practical use though, I dont see this as an issue.
- I played the same youtube video on my XL and the 2 XL, while the 2 XL seemed more directional, it wasnt appreciably louder, in fact the iphone 8 plus and note 8 were both louder at full volume. i think the stereo speakers are a decent upgrade but didnt give me the wow I was hoping for
- the screen at full brightness seemed comparable betwen the xl and 2xl, neither was as good as the note 8, thats the best screen ive seen
- i took pictures with the xl and 2xl, again the pics seemed slightly warmer on the xl but was it because the screen is slightly warmer than the cooler tinted 2xl?
- the 2xl does have a slightly narrower, yet noticeably longer screen than the xl
- the ringtones and message alert sounds are updated and all new on the 2xl
- didnt spend much time looking the the regular 2 but no blue tint off-axis
- IMO, P-OLED is not superior to glass (AMOLED) and probably cheaper to produce and lighter
- i could zoom in farther on a picture with the 2xl than the xl, same picture, same distance, zoomed in after pic was taken
- note 8 version of android is too busy and not as user friendly as google, especially regarding camera app. this is one reason, along with updates, i stay with google
- squeeze was easy to generate assistant and decent feature
-tried to compare videos shot in 1080p 60fps between xl and 2xl to test for image stabilization and the 2xl was better, the xl still was good but choppier while the eis caught up
- couldnt see the LED notification light because it wasnt on but it is there and i do like this feature especially customizing the color of light based on app or or contact message received from
-im not going to cancel my order largely because google is giving me $410 trade-in for pixel xl 128gb, i do feel the 2xl is better but incremental upgrade in some areas
-took one portrait mode pic with 2xland it blurred the blur area perfectly which the xl doesnt always do so wel
- the glass edges are noticeably more rounded on the 2xl vs xl
-ip67 is a reason for me to upgrade, more margin of error
- i tend to stay with google because no bloatware when ordered direct from google and clean android experience plus free, unlimited, uncompressed cloud storage
- i think most will be happy wit hthe 2xl but it isnt miraculously superior but is an upgrade in camera, screen real estate, portrait mode, ois/eis, squeeze feature, faster processor (cant hurt), google lens (that wasnt not on the demo), stereo speakers, etc...
- the note 8 while a great screen and camera just doesnt have the software i am using to interface with

any questions?

Re: SO I went to Verizon today and compared my Pixel XL to the Pixel 2 XL

Question - if you buy unlocked and go to T-Mobile for the deal they are offering, would they install bloatware to get wi-fi calling and visual voicemail?

No bloatware will be installed. WiFi calling / VoLTE works fine on T-Mobile since Android has it built in and T-Mobile plays nice w/ unlocked devices.

For voicemail you would have to download their app.

Android M introduced native support for Visual Voicemail, and T-Mobile supports it. Works great on my Nexus 6P. Can't imagine why it also wouldn't work on Pixels.

Pixel 2 XL for me is the only option. I like big phone + I consume a lot of media via my phone. Without question I always go with the bigger phone.

The screens of the two phones are going to be pretty much the same width. The XL will be about 1mm wider. So, size-wise, 16:9 content content going to look pretty much identical on both phones, assuming there will be black borders on each side of the video on the XL.

Pixel 2: 66mm wide X 113mm tall

Pixel 2 XL: 67mm wide X 134mm tall

I'm stating all the above based on calculations I was doing this morning using this site...
Screen Size Calculator

...enter in the screen aspect ratio and diagonal size, and it gives you screen width and height.

I entered in diagnonal size of my Nexus 6P, and it calculated its screen's height and widge perfectly, so I'm assuming the above Pixel calculations are likely pretty accurate.

Yeah it will work -- that is what I told him :P.

Sorry, when you said "For voicemail you would have to download their app", I read that as "visual voicemail".

I still stand by I always go with the biggest. Screen is a big factor. Bigger battery doesn't hurt either :P. Also content will adjust to the new ratio of phones eventually. I have no real complaints at the moment with my S8+.

Geez ppl, just wait till you get the phone in hand. You can always return the phone, if u dont like it. No worries. lol

After going to two Verizon stores yesterday and coming up empty, I went to a 3rd store today and was able to play with the floor models. They had two each of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. One of each was blue and one of each was black. The blue finish felt much more plastic-y to me. The black finish had a little texture to it that made it feel more like paint and less like plastic. So, I'm glad I ordered black and not blue. The XL's screen seemed to have deeper blacks to my eye but otherwise I thought both screens were very sharp and looked great. The curved screen edges on the XL was a little odd to my eye at first but I got used to it quickly.

After my visit to the Verizon store, I canceled my order for two Pixel 2's and ordered two Pixel 2 XL's instead. The Pixel 2 while definitely a step up from the original Pixel I have now just looked too much the same as the phone I have now. I liked the limited bezels of the XL much better.

The sad part . . . I now have to wait an additional two weeks for my new phone. :(

Anyone check in the settings to see if OEM unlocking is grayed out like last years?

Good question. If I'm able to get to a Verizon store, I can check the settings for you. My hunch though is that it will be grayed out.

Are you keeping the S8+ as well? I'm pretty much in the same boat as you.

For 1k, the phone has to be near perfect and give me the wow factor. I canceled my order as well. I am really happy with my Oneplus 5 but I am looking to get the Pixel 3.

The pixel 3 will probably have a better design, display, a bump to 6gb of ram and support Tmobiles 600mhz band.

Assistant will advance more and Lens will probably be out of beta at that point
