Does rooting drop the Sprint Nav?

Newbie question. Still learning before attempting a root.
Sprint Hero - will get in June.
If I root it (trying to get the tethering ability by doing so), will it drop the Sprint Apps such as Navig. or the Nascar App? If rooted, can you reinstall those from Sprint?

Thanks for your time.

It SHOULD be specified, that theres a BIG difference from Google Maps and google nav.

Google Maps: is pretty good for Digitial mapping and walking directions, but it's extremly laggy while driving, mind you it's a map program not a Nav.

Sprint Nav: While finiky at times, it's route detection is spot on and logical.

Google Nav: While it has more features, including a nighttime mode (Which sadly sprint nav doesn't) it is slightly laggy and can cause that Last Minute Turn habit.

The only superior feature for TeleNav (Sprint Navigation) is traffic and alternate routes. It is frustrating that it tells to you click a button to find an alternate route and then tells you it doesn't exist.

Google wins on interface and overall functionality.

Dude, Google Nav is 10 gallion zillion trillion billion million times better than Sprint Nav! Sprint Nav had me lost in the country one time and would cut out on me and the sad part about it was that I was in a EVDO area! Updated the Moment to 2.1 and Google Nav is the bomb!

I voted sprint. I like the way you can go step by step on screen and the veiw shifts around the screen following the road with google nav, but the voice on sprint sounds better. also I tried both the other day to get me to the same place, and google had me go about 6 miles further, and threw in a forest service road for some reason.... sprint just took me right there.

The sprint nav app is great but i like being able to add favs and send directions from my pc to my phone

I've only used the Sprint/Telenav, but I've always been pleased with it and it's never steered me wrong at all. I'm sure I'll try out googles as soon as I get a chance as well. I also saw this evo demo today, looks pretty slick on the evo, esp with the window mount.

Sprint Nav and Google Nav are both good witb directions but if I had to choose it would be Sprint Nav for 2 reasons. The voice is much better and won't frighten little children and it doesn't pause the music that's playing when giving directions. Everytime I give Google Nav a chance this annoys the hell out of me because its constantly speaking while pausing then starting whatever is playing in Pandora. The robotic voice sounds horrible through the car stereo.

I like Google Maps and it's features (i.e. traffic, views) but loathe her voice. She makes the baby Jesus cry. Sprints turn by turn is more... human sounding. Hopefully it's improved for GMaps.

I haven't used either yet but have been searching for the best offline navigation app for Android. Paid or Free doesn't matter. Live in USA.

I agree with many...

Google Nav you can get up and going a lot faster, but the voice is horrendous.

Obviously, Sprint Nav is way better if you do not have 2.1 yet on your phone yet. One of the coolest things about the google nav is the street view and the integration to reviews and calling on certain things. And the traffic overlay is always nice to have as well.

I don't have a Hero, but I have the Pre right in front of me and I see no such option.

I thought it was auto-dimming when it was dark out. I may be wrong, it's been a while since I've had my Pre. My Hero's Sprint nav does for sure dim at night though.

WoW, the poll is neck-to-neck. I prefer Sprint Nav atm as I have tried both the Navs. I believe Google Nav can get better, So Let's see how the Evo 4G plays a big role in that. Maybe the google Nav has gotten better.. Looking forward to it.

I haven't used the Google Nav yet but I've been using sprint Nav since the HTC Touch and wouldn't give it up. I loves it.

I have used both on my Touch Pro 2, but not an Android phone. When it comes to Windows Mobile, Sprints Nav wins hands down. It speaks to you for turns, says the street names, tells you left or right for the next turh, and tells you how far before you have to turn. You don't have to look at the screen at all. You can even say the address or business you want to find instead of typing it in. The Google version, just beeps when the next turn is ahead. Then you have to look at the phone to see if it is left or right, or going onto a highway. I would rather watch the road not the phone. But then again, this is compairing the Windows Mobile version of the two products, not the Android.

Both are Good but...

Google navigation launches much faster and is much easier to get through the screens. Google Nav also shows a picture of the destination, which is really good for locating a house, and Google Nav has a better sync feature for your contacts and other Google applications. Sprint Navigation is much slower to launch, and has been unable to sync with my contacts' addresses from my Samsung Moment. However, the on screen display of the navigation on Sprint Nav is much better. It gives you a 3D car icon and looks like stand alone GPS displays. Also, Sprint Nav allows you to save your location, search for gas by price, etc. Sprint Nav has way more features. The thing that takes the cake is that Sprint Nav's Voice-over is much easier to understand making it more usable than Google Nav. However, Google Nav shows a lot of promise and may overtake Sprint Nav when it gets an update, which is more likely that Sprint Nav getting an update. So, Sprint Nav wins for me now, but Google Nav can catch up with some updates. Hey, when I first launched Google Nav, it said it was still in beta! It could get much better.
