I ask again, why does the price change make anyone think the phone will suddenly have carrier bloat and not get rapid, direct updates? If there is some real reason behind these concerns I'd like to read about it.

I'm with you. I'm sure it's still going to be a plain vanilla android phone, that'll get the same updates as the previous versions before it. It'll just be sold by the carriers as well.

That's the thing that I'm most afraid of -- I'm not sure that it's true but, if it is, that's really bad news. American (and maybe Canadian -- but not the rest of the world) consumers have been subjected to anti-competitive business practices in the mobile phone industry for at least the last decade or so.

I was so happy to see a powerful player like Google stand up to the carriers -- by promoting unlocked phones -- not sold through the carriers -- at a very competitive price. I hope they're not going back on on their pledge: "Don't Be Evil".

We don't know all the details yet. So let's not jump to conclusions.

You already jumped to a conclusion obviously.

I bought my Nexus S 4G from Sprint, my Nexus 4 from TMobile and my Nexus 5 as well, none of them had carrier bloat or lacked rapid updates. This is not the first Nexus to be sold by carriers, it is just the first to be offered by all carriers (as far as I recall). I guess that's why I'm so confused about the concerns being expressed.

Its US carriers we're talking about, esp Verizon. We should have concerns. There's only one company that's been able to get the carriers to do its bidding, and that's Apple. They were able to do it because of the iPhone's massive sales volume. The Nexus is the exact opposite, it barely sells. Expecting carriers to do the right thing by the consumer is naive.

Isn't Moto closing its American factory though? And the parts were never all built here anyway. Its like cars, they are built all over the world.

Its US carriers we're talking about, esp Verizon. We should have concerns. There's only one company that's been able to get the carriers to do its bidding, and that's Apple. They were able to do it because of the iPhone's massive sales volume. The Nexus is the exact opposite, it barely sells. Expecting carriers to do the right thing by the consumer is naive.

It will get updates on time, look at Motorola, they were very timely with updates with the Moto X on Verizon getting updates faster than some Nexus devices. If you are concerned it would be baseless fears.

They can be assembled here which amounts to "built in America".

Motorola is going to shut down its Texas plant but Lenevo still manufactuers here in the states.

Google Nexus 6 My buying decision comes down to this

1. Contract pricing - $50 would be awesome but unrealistic
2. An assurance from Google that since all NA carriers have the same model, they'll all
a) be unlocked
b) get updates direct from Google with no delays, or 'certification' (looking at you Verizon)
3. Ability to keep unlimited data while upgrading on Verizon on new contract
4. Reviews say nothing bad about camera/battery life

Looking forward to buying it soon!

Read my last post - this is not the first Nexus sold directly by carriers. My last three Nexus phones were purchased directly from two different carriers and none had bloat or required carrier approval for updates.

You can also still buy it directly from the Play store, so there is that as well.

The reason to buy from carriers is upgrade pricing. Also I'd expect the phone to act as the Nexus 5 did.

It would be nice if this phone could keep it going and retain the jobs. If that mean future Moto X will be assembled in US as well then also good.

Google Nexus 6 L is still to come

Dev preview tomorrow. Final build isn't even done.

I'm expecting lots of hidden things which haven't been mentioned in the changelog. At least I hope so. And all the Google apps should update too, esp looking forward to a better camera app.

It'll be $49.99 on contract for AT&T. For T-Mobile you have the monthly installment plan, and T-Mobile version will definitely be bootloader unlockable and should be sim unlocked. Can't help you with Verizon though, they are the most restrictive of the bunch. As I understand, you need to pay full price for the device if you want to keep your unlimited data on Verizon.

There are no reviews, no one have their hands on it yet, the device is not even released. Android L is supposed to improve battery life, and it's a large battery, even with a big QHD screen, it should last at least 4hours screen on time, but I'm predicting 5 for more savvy users. For the camera, it use the same camera sensor as the OnePlus, but have OIS, and Android L come with new camera API, photos will look better than what the Moto X offers. Google is the one doing the image post processing technology on this one.

I'm concerned more about the phone size. This is not an everyday phone for everyday people. Most people are stretching for the Note or iPhone 6+. I'm sure Google will keep selling the N5 but it is beginning to get dated. I wish Google had gone the Apple route and at least offered different size devices. I'm a Note 3 owner (big fan) but i'd be lying if there were not times I wish it was a bit narrower. The N6 is also thicker. It looks nice though. $650 is not bad for going the carrier route but I'd say this sucks for people who previously got the N4 & N5 to go without the contracts. This is a massive step up in price for them since they buy un-subsidized.

Will the Nexus 6 be unlocked when sold via a US carrier. Most high end phones in the UK are unlocked. I think Google/Motorola haven't produced a phone that represents good value globally. It is possible to make a high specification Android phone at a reasonable price. Other companies have done it. At this price, Google should have waited for a smartphone friendly 64 bit SoC. I'll pass on the Nexus 6 for now. Too much of a premium for the pure Android experience. I like the Nexus 6. It's just too expensive. And too big.

Lot of people feel this way. Part of me thinks its 6" just so they could call it Nexus 6. And every phone next year is going to be 64bit, truly taking advantage on L in a way the N6 cannot, which is ironic.
