Google Nexus 6 on Verizon

Re: The on-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware

So Google develops Android, but they don't have the right to decide what "pure Android" is...some guys on the internet do. Ummm...ok...

Wrong, Google does have the right to decide what pure Android is. Pure Google and pure Android are different. Pure Android is the source code and apps Google publishes that developers at Amazon, Cyanogen, and XDA use to build their version of Android. What is on Nexus phones is Google's version of Android. It is mostly pure, but adds Hangouts, Google Now Launcher, Drive, etc. It isn't guys on the internet deciding what is "pure Android" and "pure Google", Google decides that by choosing what is open source (pure Android) and what is not (pure Google).

Re: The on-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware

Umm, ok indeed. Because that is none of what I said. What I said was that Google does not own Android - not in the sense that Apple owns iOS. Because of its open source nature, anyone can pick it up and use it and give it any form they please. Google may or may not have the "right" to decide what "pure" Android is...(in the open source world, such "right" is meaningless even if it were to exist), but even Google has never officially claimed such right. Come to think of it, actually it is "some guys on the internet" (like here, for example) that claim that they have such right.

But for the sake of argument, even if Google has such a right, they choose to define pure Google and pure Android differently by releasing one source code for Android and a modified image for the Nexus devices, which code differs from Google's own released "pure" Android code.

I guess what I was trying to say, was that Google owns the brand or flavor of Android that everyone else uses (Kitkat/Lollipop/etc). So my real point here is that how can carriers get away with claiming that slapping their bloatware on top of what Google has already produced is a "Pure Android Experience" ?

Re: Nexus 6 on VERIZON

Talked to a Verizon rep today and he did confirm that Google Play purchased Nexus 6 phones will be activated if brought in. Not sure if they will be sold in stores.
Hmmmm, interesting because it's nowhere in our systems yet, So how could he knows that?

Re: Nexus 6 on VERIZON

With GSM, you can buy the phone anywhere, as long as its unlocked, pop a valid SIM in, and you're done.

With CDMA, the carrier can block activation based on the IMEI. That's why even with Play Store Nexus 5, you had to call into Sprint to have them activate the phone. So I think this is one way Verizon can control which phones they'll allow, even though its the same model. This is because CDMA has proprietary code which is controlled by individual carriers.

So with the whole CDMA/GSM thing, allegedly since the N6 has a nano-SIM slot, does this mean you could take your "VZW" N6 and go to another other US carrier or vice versa?

I was on VZW for years and then when I got married and up'ed to family plan for several years, I couldn't take the $150 monthly bill so when the N4 came out, we jumped ship over to TMobile where I used their $30 prepaid for awhile until I switched us both to post-paid plans, but still only paying $96 month for the last 1.5yrs. I have loved saving the $$$ but with a couple trips we take a year and an extended one this past Summer, all of it driving, the signal along I75/I85 just suck donkey balls. Even around town in some places I frequent, not even their Wifi is good enough, yet my friends on their VZW phones have flawless 4G signal.
Long and short is, I'm thinking of joining back to the "evil" Big Red here when the N6 comes out. I just want to make sure I still have my "freedom" to explore any other carrier as long as I have phone.

Thanks!

Re: Nexus 6 Verizon Release Date Rumors

I hoping like others that it doesn't matter when VZW has their N6 phones in store, as next Wed is pre-order day for N6 and it SHOULD be the same. Buy from Playstore, insert sim and poof! Best coverage their is on a N6 :)

I believe since its the same phone model, you will have no issues taking a Verizon phone and activating on a GSM network, in fact Verizon is known for keeping their phones carrier unlocked (one of the only good things about them).

For your signal issues, you can also think about using a prepaid service that uses Verizon's network, although it'll be hard to find one that has 4G.

Re: Nexus 6 Verizon Release Date Rumors

I definitely see them not stocking in store and only selling on their site and google play. Then they can push the droids in store.

Re: The on-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware

Thread title made it seem definitive and proved, but this is pure speculation. Not that I was going to purchase this on-contract in the first place, but basically there isn't any evidence that the carrier sold phones will be bloated up.

You're completely missing what's going on. The carriers aren't claiming anything. "pure Android experience" is the term Moto is using to market the X. Moto is telling their carrier partners that they want that term attached to the X, so the carriers are attaching it to the X. Moto is using it because there is barely a skin on the phone, it has nothing to do with what apps they have. Pure Android doesn't have the Moto software suite, but that doesn't stop Moto from using the phrase. Complaining that the carriers are using that term when they add their own apps to the phone is just missing the point of what Moto is marketing and placing blame where none should be placed.

I dunno... take a look at Verizon's Moto X page. You'll see that they at least didn't want to get sued. The wording they are using is premeditated:

"Use intuitively with a more pure Android experience" [emphasis added].

;) Did Motorola tell Verizon to do that?

Sued by who? You're joking right?

Anyone who feels they got misled into buying (and entering into a 2yr contract) what they thought was an equivalent to a "Pure Edition" (Yes, this is the actual name of the phone) handset. Why else would Verizon word it this way? Smart move, don't you agree?

Re: The on-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware

Nexus devices offer the base Android OS and then add a suite of Google Apps. Other devices can opt to exclude those apps, but doing so precludes their ability to access Google's Play Store, as well as their ability to receive direct OTA updates to the OS from Google.

If a device tweaks the openly available Android OS (even as simply as by changing icons, providing an additional/alternative app, etc) then it is bloating the device and inhibiting its ability to continue to run the latest, truest Android OS.

First, I'm not sure how you missed the obvious sarcasm in my post.
Second, I guess i missed where Google defined pure Android as the part that is opened source.

Yep... even so much that it would completely screw the phone up if OTA updates came directly from Google. Which is why they have to go through the sausage making process of the carriers before it can get to your phone. If the updates come directly from Google, this is what I consider a phone to be "Pure". After all, Google DID develop Kitkat/Lollipop/etc..

I give up. If you're not kidding then i don't know what to tell you. I don't know how many times i have to say that "pure Android experience" is Moto's marketing term and they want the carriers to use it
If someone feels misled because they can't read then i don't feel bad for them. I suppose next someone will sue Verizon because they bought "the next big thing" which would be a Note 4 when what they wanted was a big iPhone and they felt misled smdh

If it's Moto's marketing term, then why didn't Verizon roll with it?

Google Nexus 6 Play Store Version and T-Mobile

Will the play store version get wi-fi calling on T-mobile?

Re: On-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware?

If they can just throw around the label "Pure Android Experience", that means they think we are stupid and they will go ahead and put the pre-loaded (non-deletable) bloatware, locked bootloader, carrier start up splash screen, etc.

Does Google have enough influence over the carriers to prevent them from installing bloatware on the Nexus 6?

Re: Play Store Version and T-Mobile

I don't think so since android doesn't have it baked in yet and is a t-mobile baked in feature
