Google Nexus 6 on Verizon

Re: Will the Verizon version of Nexu 6 be an orphan when it comes to software updates?

The nexus 5 was the first phone sprint ever offered where it was simply a Sim that went into the device and they had zero control or bloat on it. Software updates come straight from Google just like an unlocked GSM unit would. It was a gigantic paradigm shift.

I would be shocked if vz was not going to be doing things the same way.

Its Verizon, what Sprint or any other carrier did doesn't matter, just look at what they did with Galaxy Nexus.

I think being there is only one model for US carriers that it won't be. Maybe that was some bargaining chip google used to get it on verizon, using the higher price to make 1 model and hopefully updates will come at the same time as the others. Only time will tell.

The galaxy nexus also had a million and one issues because it was samsung (poor radios, 1st gen lte battery sucking radios, meh screen) not to mention the galaxy nexus there were multiple versions, unlike the nexus 6. But you could also say verizon sucks at updates, yet in the last year, have been one of the better carriers with updates just look at the moto devices, and this is a moto device...

For the record, Sprint was months behind GSM unlocked on the GNEX for updates too. The point is that all the rumors suggest one model n6 being released. Exactly the same as the n5, and the N5 hit the other major north american CDMA carrier in a new way, you literally could buy it from play unlocked and active it on Sprint- which was absolutely unprecedented prior. I am sure VZ has succumbed to the pressure and are willing to take the n6 on Goolge's terms. I don't see google launching another nexus and letting VZ clustereffit. Same deal is the iPhone. We are in a new era.

there is only one model for all US carriers that sell the Nexus 6? is this even possible? Does this mean the one sold by AT&T will have both GSM and CDMA bands?(in addition to both AT&T and Verizon LTE bands)

One can only wish, so more people will live that oligarchy.

Yes it's possible, look at the iPhone 6. There is 1 nexus 6 for US and one for worldwide.

Re: On-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware?

Talked to the idiots at Best Buy while I was there looking at stuff yesterday. I really hate that store now by the way. I mean how can you sell things and not have a display model. That aside, they said they have seen a test device from Verizon, full of bloatware. However, I would take that with a grain of salt as you all know Best Buy hires some real winners. Do any normal people actually get jobs there?

That's funny. I would absolutely LOVE it if the Verizon one came full of bloat. Deserved, for choosing to be on that idiotic carrier.

Actually, leaving out the color and storage variances, each iPhone is available in 4 different models depending on carrier, locale, etc - only an unlocked Verizon iPhone would be functional across all 4 major US carriers (though it lacks support for band 12). Nexus has 2 different models, that's it, and about the largest scope of covered bands/technologies of any phone available. The US version will be the same model by all US carriers, though it remains to be 100% confirmed whether or not Google will allow the carriers to have done any tinkering with the software / sim-locking.

I deserve my phone to be loaded with bloat because where I live the only carrier with decent signal is Verizon? Right...

Re: Will the Verizon version of Nexu 6 be an orphan when it comes to software updates?

How has Sprint been with the Nexus 5?

The same as everyone else, and that is really the point. They are absolutely hands off- the updates come directly from Google and are delivered at the same time as all of the other variants. It is no different than GSM. You literally could take a Sprint nexus 5 and throw a tmobile SIM in it and it would work. Vice versa would work as well. It was to me, an unbelievable shock (in a good way) when I got the n5 last year and saw how it worked.

This is NOT how it worked with the GNEX. The gnex had the updates sent to sprint and then after weeks sprint would push out there own update to end users well behind the GSM updates. Verizon was even more delayed with the gnex as many know.

With the n5 all carriers are equal, updates hit all devices at the same time regardless of what carriers sim is inside. A radical departure for those used to updates from CDMA carriers. I expect the n6 to work the same way, including the vz n6.

If [insert carrier here]'s phone has bloatware, you always have the option of buying one from Google Play or other sources from which the phone - which would work fine on that carrier - would not.

Re: On-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware?

Don't see why this is even an issue. If there is any carrier bloatware, just root the device and use Titanium to remove/freeze the offending apps.

If they've added bloatware, they've also probably made it more difficult to unlock the bootloader, so your solution might not be so simple to implement.

I had a Galaxy Nexus on VZW. Unlocking the bootloader was a simple process (as was root). I would assume this would be the same for the N6. I can't imagine a Nexus branded device being locked down.

If for some crazy reason the bootloader is locked, then I'll definitely keep my Note 4.

Re: On-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware?

I went by my Local ATT store today just to see what they had to say and to see what my upgrade status was. They said that they had no idea about the phone(par for the course). I said it will be going on pre-order Wednesday on the Play Store for $649-$699. I asked if they would be doing pre-orders then. She said she doubted it as they would have heard something by now if so. Again, just reporting what I saw and heard.

All words of any carrier's reps are to be taken with a truckload of grains of salt....

Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

It's been confirmed by Google.

Unwrapping Lollipop: Ars talks to Android execs about the upcoming OS | Ars Technica

"As such, we asked if history would repeat itself with these new carrier Nexus devices. "I don't think we're going to do that. There is carrier testing that has to happen—you can't get away from that—but we're trying to have our updates be frequent," Burke said. "I think the carriers are learning and realizing that's a feature they want. So I think these are getting more efficient and they're getting better at it."

So it sounds like carrier Nexus devices will lag behind the unlocked versions, as they will have an additional carrier testing step. The hope this year is that the carriers wise up and won't delay things too much, but the potential for a delay is there."

And this is the problem with Google, unlike Apple they don't insist that their phones get no interference from carriers. If they can't even do this for Nexus then there's no hope for the rest of Android phones.

I fully expect delays on Verizon now.
