Google Nexus 6 on Verizon

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

Just saw this too.... So glad I am getting it from the play store in it's pure untarnished beauty

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

So if I buy the nexus 6 off Google play store, that would be the unlocked version? And then I could just take it into a local AT&T Store to get the sim card?

Sorry if this sounds dumb but never bought a nexus phone. Had always been a note user looking to switch

Yes, it should work like that.

I'm very very disappointed in Google for doing this. It makes a complete mockery of the whole 'one single model for all carriers'. Now carriers will be free to lock stuff, add bloatware, remove what they don't like etc.

In other words, it's no longer a Nexus if you buy it from them.

No question to me is dumb. If I don't understand then I ask... And the one from the Play store will be a pure google phone. You can technically use it on any carrier if they let you. I know AT&T will as will T-Moblie and Sprint. I won't vouch for Verizon as they might but might not. I am buy from the play store and will be using it on AT&T.

I could not agree more if this is indeed the case. Very disappointed and very sad for all the people that want this phone but will need the carrier subsidies to get it. Because everybody should get to experience the real Nexus experience.

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

Nexus 5 on Sprint, AT&T & T-Mobile didn't have this issue.... Enter Verizon

So "testing to make sure it works properly on their network" Is the same as "free to add bloatware, lock it up and do whatever they want to it"
Nahhh...that's not a leap in logic at all /s

The thing is, this is the first time Google has had a Nexus on all four networks. None of us know what that means. No matter what hopes or fears you may have, they're just that...hopes or fears. Nothing is definitive yet. But lets not let that stop the FUD

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

Who says apple pushes updates willy nilly? Maybe the carriers test it before the updates are announced? This is getting out of hand

Re: Will the Verizon version of Nexu 6 be an orphan when it comes to software updates?

The same as everyone else, and that is really the point. They are absolutely hands off- the updates come directly from Google and are delivered at the same time as all of the other variants. It is no different than GSM. You literally could take a Sprint nexus 5 and throw a tmobile SIM in it and it would work. Vice versa would work as well. It was to me, an unbelievable shock (in a good way) when I got the n5 last year and saw how it worked.

This is NOT how it worked with the GNEX. The gnex had the updates sent to sprint and then after weeks sprint would push out there own update to end users well behind the GSM updates. Verizon was even more delayed with the gnex as many know.

With the n5 all carriers are equal, updates hit all devices at the same time regardless of what carriers sim is inside. A radical departure for those used to updates from CDMA carriers. I expect the n6 to work the same way, including the vz n6.

The Nexus 5 does not work on Verizon, or does it?

Carriers do test iOS updates, but Nexus fanbois don't wanna hear that. They hate when facts detract from their arguments.

Awesome. Thanks for the info.

For the carriers that'll let you, why would anyone not buy from the playstore, and buy from the carrier? Isn't one of the selling points of the nexus line to have a pure Google experience free of carrier bloat?

I will not buy a carrier branded Nexus phone. Felt loke this before this was posted. I'm ordering mine from the Play Store.

I'm not a fan of Verizon but went would they delay nexus 6 updates if 4.4 came to MotoX before any nexus device (short of N5 that was sold with it)

That's what I think a lot of people from Verizon & first time Nexus users are having a hard time wrapping their heads around. There is only one device. The same device that's in the Playstore is the same device that the carriers will be selling. The only difference is you can not subsidized in Playstore. This is exactly how the Nexus 5 work & I see no reason for the Nexus 6 to be any different

Some people like to handle a device before they purchase it so they go to the store. You can then buy it and have it right away and not have to pay shipping. Nobody knows if the carriers will add anything to it. All this talk of bloat is silly and premature.

Because some can't afford $649/$699 upfront and need the carrier subsidies to help to get the phone. Especially if they know they are not going to leave that carrier for the next two years... I personally like the freedom of knowing I can leave whenever I want. It has certain bargaining advantages when dealing with the carriers on prices of plans.

That is certainly true. But we also don't know that there won't be either. I am not that concerned because I will be getting it from the play store. I guess the GNex is still fresh in a lot of people's minds. I am hopeful that the phones from the carriers will be SIM unlocked and bloat free.

Yeah you guys make good point. I haven't bought a phone on contract for almost 3 yrs, guess I forgot about that!

But I agree I would rather hold the phone first before buying. But I'll take a chance with the nexus.

Re: Carrier Nexus 6 phones will have update delays !!

I was hoping that if I bought the N6 from T-Mobile it would get the Wi-Fi calling, but I'm not willing to put up with delayed updates.

Re: On-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware?

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014...talks-to-android-execs-about-the-upcoming-os/

Judging by Burke's statement, that's the way Google expects the majority of people will purchase the new phone. The last Nexus device to launch on a top-tier US carrier was the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, and that was constantly hamstrung by the carrier's interference. It blocked Google Wallet from the device to protect its competing mobile wallet solution, ISIS (now renamed "SoftCard"), which wouldn't hit the nationwide market until two years later. Updates were also constantly delayed, nullifying the best feature of the Nexus line and leaving customers feeling betrayed.

As such, we asked if history would repeat itself with these new carrier Nexus devices. "I don't think we're going to do that. There is carrier testing that has to happen—you can't get away from that—but we're trying to have our updates be frequent," Burke said. "I think the carriers are learning and realizing that's a feature they want. So I think these are getting more efficient and they're getting better at it."

So it sounds like carrier Nexus devices will lag behind the unlocked versions, as they will have an additional carrier testing step. The hope this year is that the carriers wise up and won't delay things too much, but the potential for a delay is there.
