Google Nexus 6 on Verizon

Re: The on-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware

And here's why I think this...

Currently, AT&T sells the 2nd generation Moto X on contract (the non Pure Edition phone) for $99 on contract. But, on their store web page it markets itself very interestingly/devilishly:

Key features include:
5.2” HD display
Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 801 quad-core processor
13MP camera with 4K capture
Pure Android™ experience
Moto voice control

Did you catch that? Yes, folks, this is what they are going to do with the Nexus 6 as well. If they can just throw around the label "Pure Android Experience", that means they think we are stupid and they will go ahead and put the pre-loaded bloatware, locked bootloader, carrier start up splash screen, etc.

They will most likely have a Nexus 6 Pure Edition that sells only on the Google Play store for $624529789498249824

The title of "Nexus" would no longer mean anything.

Let's use our heads. This is a nexus. Hell there wasn't even bloat on the verizon galaxy nexus. Just relax

Re: The on-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware

I have suspected the exact same thing which is why I'll go through Google Play to purchase the device.

I would never pay more than $400 for a nexus device. I would rather stick with my Nexus5 with Lollipop.

Re: The on-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware

Did you think that they wouldn't? It's going to come loaded up with bloatware. But, to be honest, bloatware doesn't bother me anymore. Neither does carrier branding.

I hate to be the voice of reason in an otherwise ignorant bashing of carriers, but "pure Android experience" is the term Moto is using to market the experience on the X as being nearly stock. This isn't an AT&T thing, it's a Moto thing. AT&T took it right from Moto's own marketing materials

There are two big holes in your logic. First, Nexus phones are NOT, and have never been, "pure Android". They are pure Google. And yes, there is a difference. For example, Google removes the open source messaging app from Nexus phones and pre-installs Hangouts. Hangouts is not an integral part of Android. The Google launcher that first came with the Nexus 5 is also not the pure Android launcher. A "pure Android" phone would in fact have the Messaging app and the Android launcher (instead of the Google launcher) installed. So yes, the Moto X does give you a Pure Android experience, but NOT a pure Google experience.

Second, Google exerts a level of control over the Nexus line that it cannot have over any other Android phone. The Nexus devices is how Google wants your experience to be, and it will remain so.

What AT&T did was copy the actual Pure Edition of the Moto X2 marketing materials. OOPS! That's what we call a no-no. They knew exactly what they were doing when they loaded up their bloatware-infested pos. There's absolutely nothing "pure" about their device.

Go to the Moto X2 motomaker page (for the PURE EDITION) and see for yourself. That's where AT&T ripped off the wording.

Since Google owns the Android operating system, I consider the hangouts app and google launcher 100% part of the pure Android experience and the older versions of these to be legacy.

I hope so, but I don't see AT&T giving up that kind of control over the devices they ship out of their warehouses. I am leaning towards what they did with the Moto X2. Google still gets paid this way.

Wrong again. Google does not own the Android operating system. Google maintains, publicizes and develops the project along with many smaller companies and individual developers, but no one owns Android. That's why there are multiple "forks" of Anroid, most notably Fire OS by Amazon.

And you cannot "consider" something to be part of pure Android when it is not. This isn't a matter of opinion; this is a matter of fact. And the fact is that the pure Android source code - yes, the one release by Google - does NOT include Hangouts or the Google Now Launcher. If you doubt this, you can download the code and compile it yourself and see if those apps show up. Heck, even Google Apps aren't art of core Android - they are proprietary applications that are added with Google's permission when Google certifies an Android device. But Google's certification is not required for something to run Android.

Android is advertised as "Open Source" and companies are free to develop their own flavor of android but technically Google acquired Android Inc. on August 17, 2005. But, getting back to the point... being that AT&T is laughingly claiming that their subsidized phone is a "Pure Android Experience" is absurd.

Re: The on-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware

It might have bloatware, but it will also have an unlocked bootloader like every Nexus, even the one on Verizon before. The very first thing anyone should do is root their Nexus and debloat the system. I have no doubt there will be custom rom and scripts on XDA within a few days. And you can always freeze and disable all the bloatware within Android too.

So you are basically saying exactly what I sad...except for your inexplicable belief that its an "oops" and a "no-no" that AT&T is using the marketing materials that Moto provided to sell the phone that Moto provided those marketing materials for. Do you really think Moto spent millions(or however much they spent) coming up with marketing materials only to have the carriers to completely ignore those and just use whatever slogans they feel like using? C'mon man! Its not an oops or a no-no. Its doing exactly what Moto wants them to. Advertising the X they was Moto wants it advertised. I get that you want everything the carriers does to be devilish, but this is just trying way too hard.

So Google develops Android, but they don't have the right to decide what "pure Android" is...some guys on the internet do. Ummm...ok...

It may very well be that way, but AT&T is not blameless. They certainly are laughing all the way to the bank. You and I both know there is nothing "pure" about the AT&T subsidized Moto X2.

Indeed :p

Google will be be the lead in all the latest releases (KitKat, Lollipop, etc). Everyone else is just trying to keep up. It's "open source" only as far as they are willing to support the grasping under dogs.

Just imagine if anyone besides Google were to claim a new updated version of Lollipop and called it 5.0.1

Actually the Verizon Gnex did have a small amount of bloatware (My Verizon and VZ Backup Assistant).

I would have installed both if they were not already installed...

Umm, ok indeed. Because that is none of what I said. What I said was that Google does not own Android - not in the sense that Apple owns iOS. Because of its open source nature, anyone can pick it up and use it and give it any form they please. Google may or may not have the "right" to decide what "pure" Android is...(in the open source world, such "right" is meaningless even if it were to exist), but even Google has never officially claimed such right. Come to think of it, actually it is "some guys on the internet" (like here, for example) that claim that they have such right.

But for the sake of argument, even if Google has such a right, they choose to define pure Google and pure Android differently by releasing one source code for Android and a modified image for the Nexus devices, which code differs from Google's own released "pure" Android code.

Re: The on-contract AT&T/Verizon Nexus 6 will come with bloatware

That's not even bloat. Useful apps for your basic user.

I'm sure Samsung and the other OEMs and carriers consider their apps useful for the basic user too, but if it's software that doesn't come with a stock nexus device from the playstore it's bloat. Whether it's useful or not is just a matter of opinion. As an owner of a Verizon Gnex I personally would have rather they not put those two apps on there.
