re: Google Nexus 6 Preorder Info & Reviews

There is ZERO excuse from Google treating their customers this way. Imagine going to the Apple store, you wait in line, they open, they give the first 3 people in line a phone, then just say try back later we are out of inventory. The crap-storm that would ensue would be epic. Google needs to be held to some sort of standards, this is not their first time launching a phone. So far no word out of Mountain View, and nothing from the tech blogs is just ridiculous. Is the Google-aid really that strong? Wasn't this supposed to be a pre-order? I wasn't aware there was a finite numbers of pre-orders, it is not like we are buying concert tickets.

But see, we don't know how many actually were sold. Yes, there have been very few people on forums like these who successfully ordered one, but that doesn't mean that there aren't tons of people who don't frequent these forums that were able to get one.

Anyway, it's fairly commonplace for preorders on new gadgets to cap at a certain number. That's nothing new. It happens all the time for particularly desirable gadgets. Whether it's done purposely or not by the company in order to generate a buzz, that's hard to say, but it's nothing new in the tech world.

As far as Apple goes, they know every time they make a new iPhone, they're going to sell millions almost instantly. I'm sure the iPhones are mass produced very rapidly. Nexus devices, on the other hand, are a very niche phone. Most average Android users will gravitate to manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, and Motorola. Previously, Nexus devices were often regarded as "developer devices", and most people really only knew about them if they dug deep enough to know they even existed. Granted, Google has been working over the last few years to make the brand more main stream, but I think Nexus devices still often get overshadowed by some of the more well known flagships out there. What I'm getting at is, it's probably difficult to gauge demand for a Nexus phone compared to an iPhone. Especially because the 6 is not only more expensive than the previous two phones, but also has a 6" screen, which still hasn't become a generally accepted thing.

Re: Who ordered theirs today?

There was a Who Successfully Pre-ordered a Nexus 6 thread going yesterday. It is gone now. LOL Appropriate for the Halloween season I suppose.

I was looking for that thread! I was thinking that thread was on a different forum.

Just a theory about the pre-order

I have no idea how the Google/carrier relationship works. Their terms of agreement, and whatever else that goes with that could be finalized for all I know.

However, with the amount of unanswered questions, and the lack of details (aside from T-Mobile), could it be possible Google did that in order to gain leverage against carriers?

If they've still not finalized their deals, for whatever reasons, and Google sold out of their stock within seconds, they could just use that to show the demand. Thus giving them leverage.

Again this is just a guess by me. I'm beginning to go slightly crazy waiting for the actual release lol.

Re: Just a theory about the pre-order

I'm also starting to go stir-crazy. Your theory would be nice but I have a feeling it is like many articles on the web have stated today: google is holding back on play store orders because their new focus for this device is carriers.

Re: Just a theory about the pre-order

There may be several factors involved in explaining how quickly the pre-orders "sold out." Because Google has decided to go through a more traditional distribution method (i.e. through carriers and on-contract discounts), they may have assumed that most people would order the phone subsidized through the carrier. As a result, they didn't make available very many unlocked, contract-free devices on Google Play. The VP of engineering at Android recently said in a CNET article that in the past, a nexus phone would cost $350 up front, which is a "foreign concept" to the average mainstream consumer. By working with carriers, they can build a more premium nexus phone, and get it to average consumers with a more palatable $199 on contract price. Thus, they probably assumed more people would go that route to get the phone, and severely underestimated the number of consumers willing to pay the $650 upfront price off-contract.

EDIT: Well there you have it--as the posters above have stated, Google may be holding back on purpose so that consumers go through the carriers

Re: Just a theory about the pre-order

If they think they're gonna be able to compete with Apple and Samsung with the recently released iPhone 6+ and Note 4 then they're as delusional as Samsung who thinks we need 8 Galaxy series phones released per year. If you don't market the thing aggressively, the phones will die in carrier stores (see HTC). The bulk of their sales would have come from the play store as Nexus users tend to be the hardcore phone geeks and already know they want it. They might get a few sales through carriers but nothing to warrant holding all the stock back. If there's a sliver of possibility that the carrier Nexus will have bloat or require carrier approval for updates vs the phone you buy direct from Google, who ever made that deal should be dragged out back and raped by a gaggle of silver back gorillas.

Re: Just a theory about the pre-order

Google better step up their advertising/marketing game for this phone or for sure it won't be able to compete with Apple and Samsung. Nexus phones in the past have not been about trying to make a best-selling device, but I think they've changed their game plan starting with the Nexus 6.

Perhaps they've made a deal with the carriers to pick up the slack on the marketing push. We'll see...

I was looking for that thread! I was thinking that thread was on a different forum.

That thread was merged into this one. I posted last night in the thread that disappeared and that post appeared in this thread today.

Re: Who ordered theirs today?

Okay... yesterday is now gone and done and I have forgotten it. New day. It is just a phone. I will get it at some point. I will wait until the 12th and see what happens. If, like some are thinking, that Google wants us to buy them from carriers, I will wait til that date and hope that with the carriers release, the play store will have them on sale with no fanfare and just buy one then. Otherwise I may just walk into an ATT store or TMobile store and buy one outright. I want the play store for tax reasons. But now my sights are set on Nov 12. I congrats to those who were fortunate enough to get an order off yesterday!!!! Now let the reviews and videos flood in over the next couple of weeks. I still have a pretty nice phone in the N5 to tide me over....

Almost impossible to compete with Samsung on marketing.... They spend the gross domestic product of several small countries on marketing alone... Dollar for Dollar I think they just spend way too much.. Apple actually has a minimal marketing budget in comparison.. they live on their reputation and brand name... But one thing that should have been super easy for Google to replicate is how you can go to the Apple online store and buy an iPhone outright without a contract or on contract with the carrier of choice... DIRECTLY FROM THE APPLE STORE!!! Pay $199 and they can even check your upgrade status and eligibility and even sign you up as a new customer with a carrier and port your number over.... Smooth and easy....

problem is Google's bread and butter is search and ad revenue.... on the way to $15 billion in profit this year and 90+% of that is ad revenue... But they have no clue what so ever on how to do retail sales.. Horrendous.. and for all the information they absorb and use to sell ads they have no clue how to just communicate with us on what they have in mind... I'd of rather they just came out and said..... You can no longer buy the Nexus phone from us in the play store but here are links to our carrier partners and they will take care of you.... They should not have a problem finding a great retail partner to take care of their devices.... Amazon for the Nexus 9 and the carriers for the Nexus 6... Maybe Best Buy for the Nexus 9 and Nexus Player since Amazon is pushing their fire TV and don't seem to eager to put the Nexus player up against their own device...

Don't know about Verizon, AT&T or Sprint.... T-Mobile said on their twitter account their Nexus 6 will be bloat free outside the T-Mobile "My account App" which they said is completely user removable.... The next issue would be carriers like Sprint wouldn't allow people with a T-Mobile purchased Nexus 5 activate that phone on their network even though it was compatible with their network... They'd only activate phones bought directly from them or the play store.... I am sure Verizon will be the same way... So paying $650 for a Nexus 6 from T-Mobile might lock you into T-Mobile or AT&T for life regardless of compatibility......

Re: Who ordered theirs today?

It looks like the only real way to get one is to get one through a carrier. I'd rather get one through the play store in case something happens to the phone and it needs to be repaired or they send a replacement. Google's process is simple and easy...the manufacturers, not so much. Come on Google, just let me buy it through the play store!

It's going to be hard to get over this kick in the face from Google but I'll try. My N5 should do for now.......

If so they are about 2 weeks late in that push.... Should have started very shortly after a well coordinated blog post on October 15 with all the relevant information about the device... So far only T-Mobile has give us a date (11/12) Verizon has said the phone is not yet certified on their LTE network and I've seen rumors that Verizon people are looking at December.. Possibly Mid to Late December.... Sprint and AT&T have been quiet on a release or preorder since October 15 when they were confirmed to be carrying the device..... Nothing more than information pages for both with no answer on when we might be able to play with one....
