Google Nexus 6P USB-C car chargers?

Good news. My 6p stock charger and my tronsmart quick charge 2.0 charger (using type A to C cable from oneplus) charge at the same rate. Both average around 1800-2400 mah when charging under the same conditions.

Anything over 2amps will trigger the charging rapidly notification. I kinda wish it was anything 15watts or higher.

I can plug in my killawatt and get wattage readings in a little bit.

Weird.. The stock charger should theoretically charge faster but in reality it charges only at the same rate as a QC2 one? I guess the 3A current can only be achieved when the state of charge dips below 50% or something. Can you retry the same comparison test when your battery is at a much lower level?

I have this charger: Vinsic® High Speed Car Charger with Type C Output

And this cable: Rankie® USB 3.1 Type-C to Type-C Connector

I maxed out at 1550 mA

It does say "Charging Rapidly," so that makes me feel better.;)

Re: USB-C car chargers?

Oneplus.net has the best prices for type c to sub cables for $5-$6 bucks but they are out of stock now.

Re: USB-C car chargers?

Is there perhaps such a thing as a car charger that supports USB data passthrough? My car reads the music off my phone and it would be cool to take advantage of the "charging rapidly" while still playing music and such (when my 6p escapes processing purgatory, that is)

Re: USB-C car chargers?

I am going to wait and see what quality accessories come out for this phone before I jump to conclusions and waste money and have to return things based on them not working or not working as expected. The battery life is pretty good so far so I should be ok without a car charger for now.

I'm using my incipio car charging brick, I think it's rapidly charging. However I haven't had my battery low enough to use it. Now it should with my battery around 20%.

Re: USB-C car chargers?

Almost everything at amazon is a bust. There is one actual charger rated at 3a, with a type c to type c connection, everything else you really need to read those output bylines, they are all stating 2.x + 1.x, and ive only found 1 that truly stamped 3a on the power rating. Problem is the reviewers are saying it doesnt work for the 5x/6p at all, but i suspect he is using type a to type c which would not engage rapid properly as 3a type c to type c connection should. Im holding off until we get better tests and less speculations.

I'm sure after a little time, there will be better accessories. I'll buy another brick and cable, until then though my old car charger charges fast, but not rapidly.

Type a to type c has no effect on whether a charger can get to 3A. Type A cords can handle 3A if they are properly made for it. See the one that Google sells (https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...tion/accessories_wall?hl=en-US&token=PxjZRKri). The style of the connector, for the most part, does not matter.

What is really going on is that there are two different things at play:

1.) Charger capacity - can the charger distribute power at 5V/3A. Most of them cannot at this point and this is where we are seeing the slightly below full speed. A lot of the chargers available now only go to 2A or 2.4A. This should be fixed in about a month or two. Additionally, manufacturers are playing marketing games with 3A right now by combining the outputs for both outlets and writing in small print the individual outputs.

2.) Cable rating - If you are looking for 3rd party cables, people need to make sure that the cable can handle 5V/3A. Not all cables can handle that rating. Some are specifically made for Quick Charge 2.0 so they have a cap at 2.4A.

My guess is that around the holidays is when there should be plenty of select available.

Re: USB-C car chargers?

As nickacs guessed - Amazon. I would have posted a link, but I'm a newbie, and I'm not allowed yet.

Closest I have found on amazon is the tronsmart car charger. A lot of the questions asked if it rapid charges the 5x/6p. Apparently it does.

Actually, there is a third issue, and that is communication. The USB-C charging standard allows the charger to communicate to the phone, so the phone can tell the charger how much charge to send. This is why many of the older Quick Chargers aren't fast charging, not that they can't deliver the power but rather because they can't communicate properly with the phone (the Quick Charger communicates with Quick Charge phones using that protocol, but typically can't communicate using the USB-C standard).

From what I can tell, you are correct that a USB-A to USB-C cord should be able to work, just that whatever USB-A device is being used as a charger has to be able to communicate using that USB-C type standard.

That's because the Tronsmart car charger will deliver 5V/2.4A which triggers the "Rapidly Charging" notification if you have a cable that can handle that load. My current in-car setup is:

Car charger - Amazon.com: USB Car Charger,Tronsmart 2-Port Rapid Car Charger with Quick Charge 2.0 Technology.Total 36W Output for Apple and Android Devices(Includes two 3.3ft 20awg USB Cables): Cell Phones & Accessories
Cable - Amazon.com: Cable Matters® USB 2.0 Type C (USB-C) to Type A (USB-A) Cable in Black 3.3 Feet: Cell Phones & Accessories

In my car I get "Rapidly Charging" at a roughly 5V/2.4A depending on how low my battery is. The cables also work just fine with the wall chargers that come with the 5X and 6P since they are built to the USB Fast Charging specification (5V/3A).

You are definitely correct about the communication aspect.

I have the Tronsmart charger for my 6P and it does show "Charging Rapidly." I haven't timed it to compare it to the wall charger, but it definitely uses quick charging. I have about a 15 minute commute to school in the morning and it gets me a sizable amount. This morning I went from 77% to 93% in about 16 or 17 minutes.

Nice. I have a QC 2.0 charger in my car, but I was thinking to get this charger for the car. You never know, you need a quick charge during a quick drive. Def going to buy it now.
