Google Search problems on Galaxy Note 8.0

Hello! My dad recently received a Galaxy Note 8.0 as a gift and is having problems with the Google Search bar. When he taps it to search, it flickers quickly and goes back to the home screen. I've never had this problem on my Tab so I don't know what to tell him. Please help me get an old man's tablet working!

Check in the Playstore to make sure Search has the latest updates installed.

There was also a firmware update to eliminate this on the 2012 if I remember correctly ... Mine did that forever until I plugged in my note 10.1 to my laptop and updated the firmware that's the only way other than downgrading Google to stock version.
