Gorilla Glass? (Corning Tweeted No)

By the way. Know what is on the Gorilla Glass list?

This.

Yup, so does this (same phone):

It all depends on how you treat the device. I use a case/belt clip combo. Never used a screen protector... have dropped it a couple of times.

That line is not a crack or anything... Its a reflection of the line along the forum posts.

thats a dissapointing sight considering how the TBolt isnt even that old of a phone.

Gorilla Glass isnt perfect.. it has won over alot of fans though and made alot of people happy they dont need to use screen protectors.. I would surely have a different view of GG if that was my phone though.

Just a thought but what if Samsung/Google found a glass that provides the same level of protection that alot of us are accustomed to but allows for improved touch response from lets say a gloved hand. Would this still be viewed as a deal breaker?

Of course not.. but at the same time I couldnt imagine why they wouldnt advertise in the press release something as great as this?

Screen Protection is a feature.. a big feature to alot of potential customers.. At this point I don't think they are sending this phone out in the wild without a quality fortified glass.. but I just wish theyd shed some light on what brand and how it well it performs.. Like I said though the fact they didnt use it as selling point during the reveal means its probably nothing special.. and we will be lucky if its on par with GG.

I have a hankering feeling that we may not know until the device is released. Sometimes in contracts between component manufacturers and device manufacturers there's a clause about not revealing what exactly is in it. The iPhone 4 apparently has some form of fortified glass. I remember a buddy of mine that is an Apple dingbat nutcase talking about how no one knew if it was gorilla glass or something else. I also know that the guys at Corning have said before that they supply gorilla glass to device manufacturers that they can't disclose, and those manufacturers pass their "fortified" glass off as their own, when in all actuality, yep, it's Gorilla Glass.

If it is advantageous for Samsung to use its glass more so than gorilla glass why would it publicize it. I heard that it might be dragontail glass.

I don't care if it has Gorilla Glass specifically, but I'd be upset if it ships with plain 'ol tempered glass or some cheap polycarbonate. This is a Nexus device, dammit, and Nexus means (in theory) the best of the best and the top of the line. Obviously its internals are a tad underwhelming (though still very impressive), but the one spec I was really excited for was that big, beautiful 1280x720 full HD SAMOLED screen (pentile display notwithstanding). That screen was going to be what sold the GN for me, and if it doesn't have adequate screen protection, I simply won't buy it.

Before anybody jumps down my throat about simply buying a screen protector, I'll just say this - I've used them for years pre-Gorilla Glass, and they worked quite well for what they did. But when I'm paying a premium for a bleeding-edge screen, the last thing I want to do is muddle it up with a screen protector. I had one on my Epic and took it off within a week because it seemed silly to ruin the biggest reason I bought the phone. Gorilla Glass has become standard on high-end smartphones, and on devices where the screen is the main showstopper, it only makes sense. To remove that layer of basic protection seems like a terrible decision from both a practical and a sales standpoint, and really would be a dealbreaker for me.

Why would I purchase a media device largely because of the screen, knowing full well I'll either have to 1) cripple it with a screen protector, or 2) wait for the eventual scratches to build up, ruining the screen anyway?

It was confirmed by SamsungMobileUSA to have another type of fortified glass. Just not name brand. It was mentioned in this very thread even....

I eat fortified cereal every morning, but that doesn't mean I'm getting all my vitamins.

Neither does eating brand named cereal.

Horrible analogy, dude.

No, you just didn't get it.

It wasn't an analogy comparing generic cereal to brand name cereal. I was comparing regular cereal to fortified cereal, my point being that just because something is "fortified" doesn't make it healthy (or, in this case, strong and scratch resistant).

Maybe I should lay off the analogies on this site...

No, apparently you didn't get me, either.

If an analogy can be used two different ways for the same subject, and be used to undo your same analogy, it is fail.

;)

if you are buying a GN, the most important link you need is the link to the screen protectors/cases for sale on this site and others.

:)

Good grief people. They're going to put scratch-resistant glass, of some sort, on all phones but will also assume you will use a screen protector.

you own an optimus t bro... that doesnt use GG.. you have no experience of how GG holds up..

that is an ENTRY level phone.. it launched @ 29.99...it probably has a plastic screen and not even glass..

alot of people stopped using screen protectors along time ago.. just because you seem to like them.. please dont imply that anyone else does.
