Gorilla Glass Victus

No, cases aren't mandatory and it's not crazy to do things differently from you. Different people are able to accomplish different degrees of safety with their phones. Some drop their phones more than once a month, others less than once a year. If you rarely drop your phones, you can go for literally decades without damaging one, and the cost and inconvenience of decades of cases and screen protectors would add up to more than the cost of repairing any rare damage that occurs without the added protection.
I rarely, if ever, drop a phone. I'm always being consciously cautious because just a scratch would diminish the device greatly to me. I the past 2 months I had a random scratch show up on the camera protector of my S20U and am not proud that just knowing it was there bothered me. Of course I replaced the protector almost instantly. Really wish I didn't care. I wish I could be one of the people you see walking around with a cracked screen but just as happily using their phones.

Well, you know what they say about opinions.

I use a case. Just no need for a screen protector. Phone is only carried in an empty pocket.

Why does anyone think a screen protector will protect against drops? That never made any sense to me.
Screen protectors can't protect your screen from all drops but they can prevent your screen cracking in certain instances. They certainly prevent scratches from drops and other circumstances.

This is exactly why I am thrilled with having Gorilla Glass 3 on my shiny (well matte actually) new Galaxy S20 FE.
GG3 is much harder, less flexible, and more prone to shatter if you drop it...so...a tempered glass screen protector is a MUST! However, seeing that scratching the screen is more likely than shattering it completely...I prefer GG3. I had phones sliding around in a drawer for years that had ZERO scratches on the screen because they had GG3. Once they started going to GG4 and above...scratch-a-palooza!
Just wanted to add that my main reason for a case used to be for protection...the S20 FE has a plastic back so less chance of damage from a drop...but now the main reason for a case is to make the back uniformly flat. Especially now with the carbuncle camera bumps that OEM's are determined to shove down our throats! :(

I almost never had any kind of scratch on my phones... Except for my XZ Premium.... Which was caused by my car key. And depends on the users daily life...

If I anticipate I'll be trading in the phone down the road, I don't concern myself with a screen protector, nor typically fret too much about a case. But if I anticipate I might simply sell it, a cheap case and screen protector more than pay for themselves in (hopefully) affording the ability to market the phone as being in pure mint condition.

Good reasoning! Makes a lot of sense... :)

I'm super careful and super lucky and haven't dropped a phone (yet). I came close from someone bumping my arm hard from behind once.

I have always gone caseless OR a wallet style case with nothing but the phone in it. Caseless if I REALLY liked the look of the bare phone. So far that was only a Lumia 925 and a Lumia 950-XL. If bare, never anything else in the same pocket.

The 950XL has a removable back that can be replaced with aftermarket. I have a top grain leather and a few exotic woods. Look fantastic with no extra bulk/weight of a case and no interference with wireless charging. Was about to take a pic of it with my S20 FE but just got it and don't have it set up for uploading pics yet. So web pics:

I have the one on the right:

And this is one of the wood backs I have:

I ordered a transparent (blue tint) wallet for the S20 Fe 5G that claims you can use touch thru the cover. If I don't like it for any reason I will get the Samsung Clearview.

Given the recent reports of screen burn-in on the Note Ultra with the S-View case, it might be prudent to hold off considering the Smart Clear View until it's determined whether that might also be an issue on the FE.

Thanks for the heads up.

I knew it was all marketing hype. I still get mystery scratches on my screen. I mean I'm used to them since I don't like screen protectors but I thought it'll last a little longer before getting hairline scratches on my screen. Didn't look like I see any difference with this new Gorilla Glass since it doesn't stand the test of time. Oh well. This is just a post to warn others not to depend on this supposed new tech.

Isn't it a preinstaloed plastic screen protector you've scratched so deep and hard?
I can see borders of it between the screen and metal frame

Nope I don't use screen protectors. And the Note 20 Ultra didn't have one preinstalled like previous devices. At least not the AT&T model.

They get away with it year after year because their clients Samsung and Co use them in their marketing hype as you quite rightly stated.
Its my understating that the glass has become more resistant to cracks over the years but in turn more susceptible to scratches.
