Gorillaglass this AINT!

I don't agree with that. I'm sure GG can be scratched but it's gotta be incredibly tough. I always keep my GS2 in my pocket, even w/ my keys, and no scratches. I had an Atrix for 6 months before the GS2 and nary a scratch on the screen, the plastic is beat all to hell but the screen looks perfect.

Lmao, did you actually read my whole post, or the thread for that matter? Again, its not keys you need to worry about, it quartz, that is in dust and grit everywhere. You can disagree all you like, but that's the fact of the matter. Research fortified glass, including Gorilla Glass and educate yourself on it a bit. Many here don't seem to have a clue about it. Proven by the fact they keep talking about keys

I somehow refuse to worry about dust scratching my sceen. I'l do my darndest to keep it out off the sand, but dust..........:)

Im truly not trying to sound rude here and I know this has been said before but her goes:

What can scratch or cut glass?
Glass (particals of glass are found in dust sand etc)
Diamonds (unfortunatley I dont keep many in my pocket but Im sure a ring in a purse is likely)
And Porcelain

With that being said it is very very possible for a screen to become scratched while inside a purse or pocket. I've had it happen to GG. (I live in phoenix and it id very dusty here) The only way to be completley safe w/ any device is w/ a screen protector. Now Im not telling people to use them because personally I dont like to, I feel they take away from the clarity of these beautiful screens, but its not fair to say the product is inferior when it truly is not and it sounds like what happened here would have happened regardless of the product.
I understand that some glass is more resistant than others but none are immune.

Truthfully I just think that if you are a person that goes naked, knowing the risk you take, scratches really shouldn't bother you... I mean if I were to have my GN naked I would expect after a little while to start seeing imperfections.. My phones never see the light of day because I need my phones in pristine condition because of resale value.. I never will own a phone for 2 years so I know I need to keep it looking border line perfect...

I had a Droid X for a year and a half without a screen protector and the screen never scratched. I have a Ghost Armor screen protector on my Galaxy Nexus now, though, because all these people getting scratches are making me feel like this screen is not as tough. I have always hated screen protectors, but I really don't mind the Ghost Armor at all. I think if you get a nice one and have a good installation, then they really aren't bad to have.

5 pages to conclude that glass scratches....were a sharp bunch.

You just realized that now huh? LOL

Regarding the screen scratching, even gorilla glass can be scratched. Someone has to know that. Look at many of the cases with holsters are designed... The screen of the phone faces in... Probably to provide protection to the screen.

I've actually found it to be more scratch resistant than my iPhone 4, Thunderbolt, and Droid Charge.

I use a pouch inside my pocket. Its actually made by a soft gun holster company Remora.

It's grippy on the outside do when you put in and take out your phone in the holster in your pocket the holster stays put. And it eliminates sliding of anything in your pocket and it keeps objects and dust out.

You can also wear the holster like a concealed gun inside of your waist band, works well with shorts or pj bottoms or if your pockets can't fit the phone.

Definitely good for nudists out there

Anything harder than GG will scratch it. For example, sand is the biggest, but a diamond ring will as well, keys tend to not scratch it since brass is relatively soft.

It amazes me that people think just because the device has "fortified glass" and not "Gorilla Glass" means that the screen sucks or that it scratches more easily than GG.

There are lots of different fortified glass brands out there, Corning's GG being just one of them. They all work in the same way, but since Corning is the only one to really push their brand, people auto-assume it's the best and/or only one. There are tons of different fortified glass brands out there, just because the device doesn't advertise "Gorilla Glass by Corning" doesn't mean it's not as good, or even better, than that product. Hell, some devices actually do use Corning Gorilla Glass, but due to the OEMs not wanting to pay Corning for advertising costs, they don't actually advertise it as being from Corning. In the case of the Galaxy Nexus, we just don't know.

The bottom line is, whether it's unbranded fortified glass or "Gorilla Glass", it will still scratch. Sure, pens, pencils, coins, keys, and other things that would likely be in Joe Everyday's pocket won't scratch the glass. But dirt, especially sand, will very easily scratch it. Even just one grain of sand can create light scratches if it gets rubbed into the glass in the right way. People don't realize that everything has a "grit" level, and dirt/sand has a higher level than your keys.

What's the easiest way to make sure your device stays scratch-free? Get a screen protector. If you get the right one, you won't even notice its there. Make sure it's the "clear" or "crystal" ones. You can even get the really cheap ones from Amazon, you would likely just need to replace it a little more often than the 15-20 dollar "high end" ones.

"Scratch resistant" doesn't automatically mean "scratch proof". I'll never understand why people refuse to use a 3 dollar item to protect their 700 dollar investment, "just because" they shouldn't have to, and then get mad when their device shows wear/scratches. Makes no sense to me.

Because most here aren't nearly as educated on the subject as they think they are. That's what happens when all you see is a lot of promo material of someone scratching keys on it.

THANK YOU! It drives me crazy when people say this. It's just a brand name!

I think the OP is a great example as to why we should all practice safe smartphoning. You never know what your smartphone might catch.

Lets not forget that Gorilla Glass only protects from Scratches. In fact, the iPhone 4 & 4S both have Gorilla Glass, and they shatter all the time. People mistake Gorilla Glass for being shatter proof. It isn't, it's only "more" scratch resistant. It shatters just like any other glass.

Not entirely true. GG is much more impact resistant that regular glass. Impact resistant and scratch resistant does not equal shatter and scratch proof. It is harder to scratch fortified glass than regular glass, but mist things that will scratch regular glass will also scratch fortified glass. Regular keys and coins will not typically scratch normal run of the mill glass either.

Ugh! Coming from my trusty Droid X, which I have had for over 2 years and currently my 12 year old DD uses/abuses, the GNex's screen is a piece of cr*d. I do not like screen protectors and having had not one scratch on my Droid X, I didn't bother to put one of the GNex. That said, I treat it gently, place it in a side pocket of my purse with keys or any other items near it, etc.

Well, lo and behold less than a month of owning the device and I already have a scratch on it. I am so peeved! I really don't abuse my phones so I am shocked at how easily this screen scratches, especially compared to my old phones. Luckily it's in the upper right corner so I am not too bothered by it, but I am really NOT happy about the fact that my brand new $300 device already is permanently messed up.

Lesson to me and others, unless it's made by Corning, get a screen protector on it! Really, really wish Samsung didn't cheap out on the gorillaglass. This could have all been avoided IMHO.

Katherine

Go run to the Vzw store and tell them that your phone is bootlooping and that you've factory reset it twice with no luck. They extended their return policy for the holidays until 1/15/12. Get a new device and put a screen protector on it. The protectors for the GN are nice. They are glossy and feels like nothing is there. Some are thick and make the screen dull but the ones that i bought with my accessory bundle are not.
