Ugh! Coming from my trusty Droid X, which I have had for over 2 years and currently my 12 year old DD uses/abuses, the GNex's screen is a piece of cr*d. I do not like screen protectors and having had not one scratch on my Droid X, I didn't bother to put one of the GNex. That said, I treat it gently, place it in a side pocket of my purse with keys or any other items near it, etc.

Well, lo and behold less than a month of owning the device and I already have a scratch on it. I am so peeved! I really don't abuse my phones so I am shocked at how easily this screen scratches, especially compared to my old phones. Luckily it's in the upper right corner so I am not too bothered by it, but I am really NOT happy about the fact that my brand new $300 device already is permanently messed up.

Lesson to me and others, unless it's made by Corning, get a screen protector on it! Really, really wish Samsung didn't cheap out on the gorillaglass. This could have all been avoided IMHO.

bahahaha. scratches happen, deal with it. Gorilla glass is just a name they are both the same type of glass one is just made by a different manufacturer. The reason samsung didnt go with gorilla glass is because the screens look like crap IMO. T-BOLT is garbage compared to this screen and all the others i have compared.

Take it for what its worth, but if people really "take care" of their phones they would have a screen protector and a cover on it. accidents happen. neglecting your phone and putting it in the side pocket of a purse is just asking for scratches (sand, dirt, dust, other objects, etc). It could have even been the INFAMOUS GORILLA GLASS in there and would have got a scratch depending on the partical that scratched it.

The Dell Venue Pro has GG and is curved.

well I guess u can still call that curved GG.. but its not the one I mentioned.. =
that glass on venue pro came out before corning even demonstrated real curved glass in computex 2011 (may)

It was also reported Corning debuted their curved Gorilla glass at Computex 2011.

I cant find image nor video of that demonstration but it was about 3 thin layers of glasses u have to carve it so it can be bent.

Yes. I wish Android Central would do a big article about this with video. Scratch test demos have people so brainwashed its ridiculous.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the GN has GGII, but couldn't say anything because it hadn't been unveiled yet. Kinda like how the EVO wasn't announced having GG, but it came out 6 months later that it did.

1. the videos i have seen were regular guys who were returning the phone for another reason and decided to do a scratch test before the return.
2. again - please point me to even one picture on the internet of scratched Gorilla Glass. i have never seen one nor can i find one.

Let me google that for you

Gorilla Glass is scratch resistant and HIGHLY shatter resistant. But it is not more scratch resistant than most other top end hardened glass options. It does resist shattering better than anything else out there. So if your concern is scratches, don't worry if its not GG. If you're worried about it surviving a 3 story fall without shattering, GG is your only option.

Add my name to the list. I got a 1.5 inch long scratch on my SGN within days of purchase. I'm pretty sure it got on there during holstering it. (Was using the VZW slider holster case and my shirts kept getting caught during slidein.) I completely babied the phone up to that point, so I'm sure that's how it got on there. Either that, or I scratched it while attempting to holster it by missing the rails and hitting the glass on the rails. Neither one of those should have caused a scratch.

I agree, I really don't like screen protectors. They reduce brightness, unsharpen the image, and add various sparkle or orange peel effects.

Before this phone, I had a Bionic which also got scratched on the screen. That was a 1/2" scratch from it falling from my bedside table in the night to a hardwood. So much for the GG.

My SGN is now in an otterbox.

Meh....

Certainly not definitive proof that the same thing wouldnt have happened with your droid. Youre jumping to conclusions. Theres a youtube vid of keys vs the GN where it remains unscathed.

Holsters. When I was in college it was popular for Engineering students to wear holsters. They got ridiculed so much that I never wore a holster. I still can't bring myself to wear one, the picture of Engineering students walking down Bruin walk with a holstered gadget is still too strong in my mind.

LOL For me, it's function over fashion as I'm old enough not to care what it looks like. I've used a Seidio spring clip holster for my Thunderbolt since day one and not a scratch on it, still looks as pristine as when it first came out of the box! Frankly, it's just asking for trouble to put a phone in a pocket of any kind. There are just too many potential things that can rub on the screen and cause a scratch.

my screen has a small dent in it. you can only see it when the screen is off and at an angle, but its there. my incredible was in the same pocket as my keys for 18 months and looks perfect

If it makes any difference, I'm just happy I have a SGN - scratch free or not. We could still be complaining when they were going to release this phone instead of if the screen scratches and by what or how.

Just don't abuse it or drop it in water and it should last you till the next one gets release.

hmm...

naked here, since release day. usually in a pocket by itself, frequently a metal-zippered chest pocket in a favorite sweater (merino...mmm). even spent a week at the beach, mostly unprotected in the console of a 4x4 that was regularly driven on the beach (ie: full of sand / salt air). no, i'm not particularly careful with my phones.

not a scratch on it, but it has only been a month...

previously, i had an x as well. last replacement (phone defects, not my wear) was ~1yr old when retired for the nexus. i am amazed how good it still looks given my treatment...there is definitely something to say about moto build quality. the corning screen *does* have a couple tiny nicks, but you really have to be looking for them to notice. rubberized exterior is great too...doesn't get beat up quite as easily, and barely shows the scars when it does get them.

i can only hope the nexus fares as well.

It scratches.. Just because its scratch resistant doesnt mean you cant get a scratch at all...

Gorilla glass SUCKS... my screen is scratched!!! - xda-developers

This statement is true

"Gorilla Glass doesn't sucks... The perception that it is un-scratchable sucks.

Unfortunately this thing is poorly market and no one makes any effort to properly tell you that, altough Gorilla Glass is really harder and really much more difficult to scratch, it is easily scratched by diamonds (well, that is life, diamonds are harder than almost anything) and quartz (which is commonly found on dust and sand). Usually scratches come from friction from jewels with the screen or friction of dust/sand in your pockets or something else with the screen. I can tell you that I take care to not store my phone in dusty places or places where jewels are nearby, and never had any scratch on it, it has even fallen once or twice, screen down.

Mutch better than, per say, my old Nokia E51 (which I love BTW), that had scratchs of just taking it off my pocket and putting it on my pocket..."

It amazes me how a person can put a $500 phone in a purse or pocket totally naked around keys and other objects. It just baffles my mind.

glade i am with verizon. never had to pay over $150 for a phone :P. then again i always talk to cs and they always hook me up

Exactly. The same things that scratch this glass also scratch GG. The biggest problem is that people think if the phone is in a pocket by itself that it is safe. They do t realize that its not keys and coins making the scratches, its tiny particles that get in everything.

Bottom line...if you've used phones without protectors and gotten no scratches you've just been extremely lucky. Screen protectors on everything if you're smart.

I don't agree with that. I'm sure GG can be scratched but it's gotta be incredibly tough. I always keep my GS2 in my pocket, even w/ my keys, and no scratches. I had an Atrix for 6 months before the GS2 and nary a scratch on the screen, the plastic is beat all to hell but the screen looks perfect.

My screen got scratched after 1 week of putting it in my pocket. Never with anything else, besides dirt and grit evidently. So now its got a screen protector and case on it. First phone I've ever protected so much.
