[GUIDE] Fascinate Beginners rooting read me *3/31/11*

I was going to say I recommend you post this question in one of the two sticky threads that specifically mention root in the title instead of starting a whole new thread to ask a question in a topic where threads already exist. But fortunately the Moderators have been super busy lately cleaning up the Fascinate forums of these types of issues. Thank you Moderators. DroidXcon's ODIN all-in-one packages are the easiest way to root in order to get the wireless tether option. You can only get the wireless tether option with the EB16 kernel and you can't use that kernel unless you have a compatible modem and ROM. I think the only compatible ROMs are superclean or one of the other custom EB01 ROMs. I would also recommend some reading:

I notice you have been very busy lately. Thank you very much. I link as many new people as I can to the forum rules and guidelines and general forum usage in the meta so they can get the most out of the forums, and hopefully the forums will not be as cluttered.

first time rooting fascinate.... questions

ok so i am very familiar with rooting and what it means, however all my experience is on the droid x which is a completely different animal... i am used to rooting with z4 root, and it is very easy... i see that on the samsung people use odin to flash fascinate root.zip ... is there a way to use z4 root for the sammy as well? if so where do i get it? and are all custom roms flashed in cwm just like the droid x? just want to make sure i am doing it correctly...

also, which rom is highly reccommended? i hear a lot about superclean 2.9 and have been anxious to try out CM7

no z4 for you. i would just use odin to flash an already rooted cutom rom like superclean 2.9.

Hey DizzyMaker, since you're new to the Fascinate, I should warn you to watch out for GunnerMike53.

He's been known to place frogs and such in his phone to see if they will make it work better.

Noob question about Odin/flashing

I just rooted my phone a few days ago, got superclean 2.8 ..I orig used Odin to do this ..I was just wondering, in order to flash different roms do I need to use Odin for that or can I just download them from Rom Manager or download them onto my sd card and install from Rom Manager?

unless i packaged the rom for odin then you cant use odin,,, all roms are available in clockwork flashable form

Rom manager doesnt work you will need to learn to install and use clockwork

you will need the flashing zip section

You CAN use odin but you don't have to... but it'll wipe everything each time u go this route.
Don't use Rom manager, put the ROM on your SD card
and flash in recovery

Thanks for the link, I got cwm all installed ..so now I just install the roms I want onto my sd and flash them from clockwork? I got kind of confused about wiping cache. Is that something I need to do only when flashing and non Froyo rom?

Thanks for your help, it's really appreciated

yes put it directly on your card not in any directorys (folders)

i would suggest you always wipe cache partition when installing a rom

you should only need to wipe data when going from eclair to froyo

You can only use ODIN to flash the superclean ROM because DroidXcon bundled that ROM into his ODIN packages. There are quite a few other Froyo based ROMs out there right now including blackhole, darkrevenge, MIUI, and truly fascinating. All of those HAVE to be flashed through clockworkmod recovery (cwm.) DroidXcon has done two separate packages for each version of superclean since 2.4. One version wipes everything, one doesn't wipe everything. So as long as you are already on an EB01 build, you can use DXC's no wipe packages as many times as you want and not lose everything.

Say I currently have froyo and I want the super_frankenclean 2_9, you're saying I can't flash that from clockwork but have to use Odin?

No, I'm saying the only ROM that is capable of being flashed through ODIN is superclean, and that's only because DroidXcon put Adrynalyne's superclean ROM in his packages. If you want the latest version of superclean and are already on a Froyo build, you have two choices; 1) Use the package by DroidXcon that does not wipe and has an x in the name (EB16SC29x_DXC.tar; or 2) download the superclean ROM from Adrynalyne's thread to your sd card and flash it through clockworkmod recovery (cwm.)

DroidXcon's ODIN packages can be found here:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/ver...ged-roms-w-root-clockwork-updated-3-10-a.html

Adrynalyne's thread can be found here:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/ver...om-superclean-2-9-1-ea15-eb01-eb16-based.html

If you aren't familiar with how to use cwm follow the instructions in DroidXcon's outstanding thread here:

What does Odin do that cwm doesn't? I don't get the "DroidXcon put Adrynalyne's superclean ROM in his packages" part, if it's too much to explain I understand ..I'm a noob to all this ...but other than one wipes and the other doesn't, is there a difference in the two methods, or do some ppl just prefer to start completely fresh?

ODIN and cwm are just two different tools used to flash (install) things on your phone. Tar files are flashed through ODIN and include modems and the cwm file. Zip files are flashed through CWM and include ROMs, patches, modifications (mods), themes, and add-ons. DroidXcon took Adrynalyne's ROM which would normally be flashed through CWM, and bundled it together with CWM, the modem, and root files in the all-in-one packages flashed through ODIN. It just makes it much easier for people brand new to root to only have to take a few steps on their part to get rooted and get the latest software at the same time.

HAHAHA! Mike's claim to fame is using the phone button in Odin just for funsies. That and peddling SC 2.X like a crack dealer working at a middle school.

To the best of my knowledge CM7 isn't available for the fascinate. CM6 has a barely alpha port, but no CM for us.

I use one click root, or flash rooted roms mostly. It's fun and rewarding.

Flash cwm_odin_all, or odin one of droidxcon's packages. Once you've got CWM up and running then you can just flash whatever you've got laying around on your card.
