[GUIDE] Rooting 3.7/Hboot2.02+ w/screen shots (1/27/2011)

Ok, another snag. I got z4 back on and the very next command:
chmod 0755 /data/local/flash_image

doesnt work. it tells me unable to chmod /data/local/flash_image: No such file or directory

Do I need to completely start over?

Ok, got past that, just had to re-push the local flash image over again.

Loading PC36IMG and on the red triangle...

I may be stuck at the white htc evo screen. How long do I wait before I pull the battery?

So for those of us who are now rooted, we should do a Titanium backup, correct? And at the moment clockwork recovery is not compatible with this root?

Success!

Had to pull the battery the first time. Then the second time it went from red triangle to booting in to the rom, so I just shut down and booted into bootloader with the down volume/power button and went into recovery again. I'm up and running the sprint lovers rom and I'm setting it up so I can make a backup. Thanks for the guides.!

so i'm a little confused. since two (or was it three) of you had the same issue, what exactly did you do differently from the guide to end up with a rooted phone?

is it possible that the two (or maybe it was three) people that posted that sd card problem, are having that problem because they have a different hardware version? (ie, the guide works for version 1-3, but not 4?...)

trying to avoid getting half way into the root process and then going back. if someone can confirm that the guide posted here work for them on 3.70, hardware version 3, hboot 2.02 that would be great.

thanks all

Hi superbrute,

At that point of the installation process you don't actually really do anything to your phone except copy some files to the sdcard, gain temporary root (valid only for the current boot session) and attempt to backup your 4G keys. You can feel free to try without changing any core functionality of your phone.

I can't re-create this issue on my end and would love to try and work it for anyone who has had it.

I read in the XDA thread when people had the same problem that typing:

mount /sdcard

right after you type "su" can help fix the problem but since I haven't been able to confirm it yet I haven't added it to the guide.

In may specific case I first copy and pasted this - mkdir /sdcard/nandroid/RSA-PR-BACKUP - like the instructions stated. The XDA thread suggested, if you were having problems with this part, splitting it into 2 lines instead of one. First I pasted - mkdir /sdcard/nandroid (hit enter) - then - mkdir /sdcard/nandroid/RSA-PR-BACKUP (hit enter) - and it worked for me. When I tried to do it altogether I would get a file or directory not found error.

Thank you for this, I'm adding it to the guide right now!

I just spent 40 minutes getting back to where I left off yesterday: stuck at the red triangle.

The three commands that follow simply fail.

Question: there's no screen shots of the final steps in this process. After the red triangle...the next three commands...are those entered from the directory where the root files are? (in the guide's example c:\evoroot) Or from a # prompt?

Did you flash the first PC36IMG.zip file?

yup. Everything goes exactly as the guide says until I put the phone in recovery; then I get stuck on the HTC screen, so I have to do the battery pull. Then I follow the instructions, try to put the phone in recovery again, it goes to the red triangle, and the next commands don't work.

Yes, the commands get entered at the C:\ prompt in evoroot, not at the # prompt.

Ok; just making sure. I'm giving up. Might try this again when I have a whole lot of time. I think I'm pressing my luck, so I'll just return to 3.26 before I do permanent damage.

You're on 3.26 software? You root really easily with that...

before you give up, if you type:

adb devices

what does it say? Just right in the command window

Oops. Already back on 1.71 and about to flash 3.26.

Yeah, I read liquidjesus' guide to rooting the older versions, but I didn't understand why I needed to go back to Eclair like he says his method does. And the method you based this guide off was supposed to work for all versions, right? Frankly, I don't see anything difficult about this method...it's just not working.

I got a question which of the list of things i downloaded from the instructions can i delete now?
