Nevermind – I get it again, I'm rebooting the phone now, and then the terminal process will finish.

And success! I guess that means I'm rooted! Thanks again!

Okay, the next development:

I downloaded 1-click-clockworkmod-2.1-to-2.2-v1.0.zip, and ran it according to the instructions. The first part – kernel.app – seemed to work fine, the phone rebooted automatically.

Once it was back on, I tried running cwm.app. Here's what I got:

designmac:Files egardner$ /Users/egardner/1-click-clockworkmod-2.1-to-2.2/Files/cwm.sh
Starting installation...
failed to copy 'zImage-recovery' to '/sdcard/zImage-recovery': Permission denied

dst: /dev/block/bml8 partition size: 0x0
part_size: 0x0
reboot: Operation not permitted

No reboot. The phone still seems to be working fine, but I'm not sure what parts of the process I can safely re-do.

Okay, I *think* it worked.

Terminal says it successfully installed superuser.apk, and seems to have stopped doing anything. But it didn't give back the command prompt ? the window still says adb at the top. Is this normal?

Yep, thats good. For some reason on 2.1, the install package command wont exit out when finished. As long as it said it was successful you're all set.

This is the issue one of the other users had with permissions. Try typing this command:

chmod -R 755 *****

In place of the *****, drag and drop the 1-click-cwm folder into terminal and press enter.

Then try running both again.

I previously rooted my phone, then one day my root access was denied. When I attempted to unroot my phone i recieved an error message indicating, "can't get window 1 of application "terminal"". What does this mean and is it fixable.

Please help

Did you previously have terminal open? Make sure it is completely close out.

Okay, so I think I've advanced to the next stage in the install process but I want to be sure everything worked before I go further.

I ran the chmod command in Terminal for the CWM folder, that seemed to work.

I ran the kernel.app file and it seemed to work, the phone rebooted.

Then I ran the cwm.app, and I got the following:

designmac:Files egardner$ /Users/egardner/1-click-clockworkmod-2.1-to-2.2/Files/cwm.sh
Starting installation...
failed to copy 'zImage-recovery' to '/sdcard/zImage-recovery': Permission denied

The phone didn't reboot, but the screen did go black and displayed two lines of red text that said something like "rebooting phone, upgrade in progress" – I don't remember the exact words, because it disappeared when I touched the screen. I'm guessing that has something to do with the red recovery mode?

At any rate, I'm concerned that because of the Mac connection problems that Verizon inflicted on us with the latest update, the zImage-recovery file might have not copied to the SD card.

I'd hate to find this out in the middle of installing a new ROM – is there any way to check?

Thanks again, this help has been invaluable.

Just to say, I was able to successfully root the phone – I've now got a little pirate-android icon in my applications folder. So I'm hopeful...

This may have been where I was stuck as well. I didn't fully understand how to reboot the phone properly and found info elsewhere. Don't quote me on this, but it was something like hold the up and down volume buttons in at the same time while pressing the power button. Wait to see the first Samsung logo in white then release the volume buttons. You should see a second Samsung that flashes. Once you see this wait a minute and you're in recovery mode. Once there, you go back to the instructions on the first page to load up the... I think the update.zip or something.

I was stuck here because I wasn't ever rebooting properly. Once I did, everything went fine. Hopefully that is all the problem you are having.

If not, and again I'm not sure, but if you are indeed missing that one file you could use your SD card adapter and load it on manually. I don't know if that will work or not, but it might be worth a shot.

Yes, that is exactly where I am stuck - it sounds like our experiences have been very similar. So the fact you made it gives me reason to be optimistic.

I actually did make it as far as the stock recovery mode, with the blue text and the big caution icon. One of the options here was "apply update.zip". I tried this, and was promptly told that the phone could not find the file.

I was thinking I might need an sd reader to go any further, since Verizon has apparently taken great pains to keep us from actually connecting this phone to a computer...

What files would I need to copy to install the right version of cwm? I think if I can install clockwork, then I can put roms on the phone the same way and upgrade without needing a computer connected. And then hopefully I will be able to connect without any issues again.

You are having the same permissions problem as before, try running that chmod command again and then run cwm.app. It doesnt sounds like a connection issue with the phone. If running the command again doesnt work, I'll give you steps on doing this step manually.

Just finished updating the 1-click to install red recovery. If anyone is still having issues, try the new version.

Okay, tried it again with the new 1-click red recovery package. I'm still getting the same results, essentially: permissions denied comes up when running both the Kernel process and the CWM install process.

When I ran the first step, for the kernel, here's what I got:

The device doesn't restart after doing the second stage, the screen just goes black until I tap it, then everything's back to normal.

I ran the chmod -R 755 command several times, but no luck. If there's a manual way to install CWM, I'll give it a try.

Thanks again!

This is very strange... I have no idea why you're getting these issues.

Do you have gchat? I could try to explain the manual way but it would be much easier using gchat.

Hey, just PMed you my info. I tried the steps for CWM again, and got the same results.

Thanks again for all your help!

Okay, success! But not exactly through this method. I kept getting those permission errors when trying to install red recovery.

Fortunately, I have a Boot Camp partition set up, so I followed these instructions from the windows side: How to Root Your Fascinate and Install Froyo

However, without all the help and info here (as well as the 1-click-root, which did work flawlessly from my mac) I would have never gotten this far. So thanks again to everyone!

Glad every things working out. Sorry we haven't touched base, been really busy!
