How bad does Always On affect battery life?

That's always been my reasoning to. I love the information I get from the AOD at a glance and it's continued to get better. Time, weather, now texts and emails will come across it in snippets so I can see what they are. To me the functionality of the AOD far outweighs the little bit of extra drain it uses and overnight I'm going to charge anyway most of the time.

It would be cool if AOD could be scheduled. I'd like to turn it off at night and on during the day. An on/off button in the notification shade would be a nice add too.

Need the notification light back. Less drain on the battery than this method.

Motorola had a nice solution for this. It would pulse the information on the screen regularly instead of the persistent AOD. I forget the pulse rate -- I think it slowed the further out from the noti. Once you acknowledged seeing it, it no longer flashed. For me it was a fine replacement of the LED light. It was a good middle ground for those that did not want AOD.

That said, I really like AOD, so I leave it on for now despite it being high on my battery consumption.

You can add it as a quick setting using the app Tiles.

Need to execute this command using adb.

adb shell pm grant com.rascarlo.quick.settings.tiles android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS

It might not show up right away in the tiles app. You need to turn off and on the AOD setting a few times for it to recognize it. https://github.com/TilesOrganization/support/wiki/How-to-enable-hidden-tiles

The setting is called "Always on" in the tiles app. At first I thought it was "Ambient Display" but it's not. I can't recall what the "Ambient Display" tile does.

I also have mine scheduled to turn off at 9:30pm and back on at 6am though you need to be rooted and use Tasker. https://www.reddit.com/r/tasker/comments/7rm6s2/help_always_on_display_pixel_2_xl/ Worked on my 2XL and now my 3XL

Thanks for the information. I used Tiles and Tasker previously, but it has been a while. I used to love Tasker in particular.

That said, I have reached a point in my Android life that I am not going to wrestle with my phone anymore. I really like the way the Pixel 3XL is running, and I am happy enough that I don't want to mess with it. I will keep this in mind if AOD becomes too much of a battery drain.

I'm going to test my device and turn AOD off and see if I can break into 8 SOT and will post my results

XL here. I charge my phone fully before going to bed. Off charge overnight AOD is the top of the list at averaging 16%. I will take note tomorrow morning and see how much percentage wise the battery has dropped from 100. I did not use AOD on my P2 because I had notification lights. So I can't compare. I thought for sure when I first got the phone and using AOD that it would dim down until movement made it brighten up. Now its on the same brightness all the time. Is AOD supposed to dim down or did I imagine it?

I found the notification light useless

Yeah I used to love it, but after getting my Garmin Active 3 with smart notifications, the notification light really isn't as useful for me anymore either. All the notifications I care about comes directly to my watch.

This morning after full charge and eight hours on battery. 11% went to AOD. I had 88% battery this morning.

AOD had little to no impact on my battery life on my 2XL, but literally drains 15-25% of my battery daily on my Pixel 3.
