How can HTC be this incompetant

There are some good points made here. All I have to say is I love the one. I have the unique opportunity to influence what people buy :-). Most go for the gs4 so I just make sure each and every customer at least looks at the "one" too. It's subtle but that's my way of giving HTC a even shot. It's sad how many do not even know HTC's flagship.

Samsung is a name brand. They sell phones, TVs, laptops, ssd's, HDD's, dishawshers, refrigerators, microwaves, tablets, and the list goes on and on. hTc sells phones. Of coarse Samsung's income and budget out strips most other corporations but it doesn't make them the best in any way, shape, or form. People know the name so they buy because they think of the quality associated. hTc just needs to get their name out there because I have both phones and in my personal opinion, the One is a better phone. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung in the near future buys a HUGE stake in Best Buy.

True story:

When I went to buy my S3 (Sprint) when it became available, I we to BB because they were giving me 120 bucks for my S2 as a trade in. I thought cool, let's do this! The BB guy went to get the phone and I started taking out my SD card out of the S2. Another BB guy said that was standing there said "make sure you don't lose that because the S3 doesn't have a micro SD slot to put it in." I looked at him with a blank stare just as the BB guy with the S3 walked up and re-stated what he said. "Yeah, the S3 doesn't have an SD slot." "you know, you have to put a screen protector on or you might scratch the screen making it unusable." I didn't say a word. After the BB guy activated the phone and everything was done, I took the S3's back cover off, took my SD card and slid it in the slot till it went "click" and turned the phone on to let it boot while I replaced the back cover. They both looked at me like I was a contagion about to infect the Eastern seaboard. I smiled and walked out.

I have had the advantage of using a new HTC One head-to-head with the Samsung Galaxy S4 since the wife upgraded the same day. After using both, I can objectively say the the One is a better built and better designed device, but you wouldn't know it based on press and marketing.

I stopped into Best Buy yesterday (unrelated item) and noticed a display for Samsung devices that was VERY prominent, well designed and twice the footprint of Apple- HTC had ZERO representation.

Is HTC stoned, stupid or fully incompetent? I am not a fanboy per se but I have to wonder who is running the "show" for HTC because they are shooting themselves in the forehead with marketing apathy.

I know some within the industry review these boards and I ask for their opinions. If anyone from HTC is reading this, I bought the One and love it but I find it perplexing that you seem to work to undercut your own products or (at the very least) seem content with getting the proverbial sand kicked into your face by the beach-bully ****** when you offer an arguably superior product...

I am genuinely sorry, but your post really did make me laugh. Samsung have a global marketing budget of $4 billion and they have sold 10 million S4 units. HTC have sold 5 million One's with a tiny fraction of that budget. Incompetent is not the word I'd use.

I think the One has been quite deliberately promoted by the best (and cheapest) form of advertising there is, word of mouth. It sells because it is a good product and people are hearing about it because everybody and his dog are telling them it is a good product. Simple and very effective.

Admittedly, I took this pic in HTC's home turf (Taipei), but it at least shows they're trying. Taxis here are full of One ads too. Stark contrast to last year when I'd mostly only see Samsung S3 ads...

And Samsung still got the highest.billboard. Probably a matter of available funds at this point. Can't say HTC isn't trying. Can't say if Best Buy didn't have some preferences too as to what they should advertise.

Best Buy's job isn't to be fair and balanced. It's to sell ****. Just like a grocery store. And just like a grocery store you can pay to get better placement.

End caps aren't cheap. Special placement isn't cheap. And Samsung has WAY more money than HTC. Period.

Respectfully, I think this misses OP's point. HTC is still a profitable company with plenty of money to spend. I'm sure you would agree that they needed a home run with the One to ensure survival as a viable OEM. OP is making the point, if I may paraphrase, that it doesn't seem like they are willing to go all in with their great device. Instead they give interviews and whine about samsungs marketing budget and competitive advantage in the supply chain.

I see your point, madlaw, as well as the OP's. However, to say that, based upon a Best Buy experience, is not quite representative. For example, HTC was advertising on the electronic sign boards that ring the playing field at the Champion's League final last week at Wembley Stadium in London. That is the biggest sporting event in Europe, equivalent to several of our Super Bowls. I don't believe that came too cheaply! They ARE spending their money as wisely as they see it. Could it be that they figure BB is not that high up the "value list"?

Lol, picketing Best Buy would get you nowhere. In the UK, I was shocked how much all the big phone stores are pushing Samsung stuff. Most of the phone stores have huge Samsung displays with all the sales staff pushing the Galaxy and even girls in Samsung tops handing out flyers out the front. HTC meanwhile, had somewhere between very little and nothing at all as a display for the One. In the Vodafone store they had one of the fake demo handsets tucked away in a corner with the mid-range stuff, whilst they had four working S4s on display. Honestly, you would think the HTC One didn't exist.

I think HTC need to seriously review their strategy toward advertising to be honest. They can't compete with Samsung $ for $, but they can maximise what they do spend. There are a few ads for the HTC One creeping on to the TV here in the UK now, and to some extent the fact that it is so universally loved helps, but it still won't be on the radar of the General Public. I can't help but wonder whether the money they pay to sponsor football would be better utilised elsewhere?

What bugs me, is everyone used to complain that Apple had all the accessories and Android phones had nothing. Now Samsung has finally cracked that, and people are STILL mad because there aren't tons of cases for their exact phone.

This cultural change takes time and money. hTc will get there eventually if they keep making awesome devices like the One. But we can't expect them to get there after 1 month of finally having a decent flagship that's uniform across multiple carriers.

It's not entirely their fault, although I would say about 45% of it is.

Yes, one day, HTC users will also be able to be ill-functioning counterfeit chargers and the like on Amazon.

How sure are you that they have plenty of money to spend?

Not sure how relevant the point you're trying to make is since both use micro USB.

As bad as their financials are they are still making money so they can afford aggressive marketing. Lets have an honest moment together, if they don't sell a boatload of ones they're in deep doo doo. Some might say that calls for pulling out all the stops.

You have to realize best buy charges a fortune for those advertising spots because, they too my friend are in Depp doo doo.

Samsung has the money to afford it, htc as you mentioned is barely lucky enough to afford TV commercial time.

Hey Phil : )

Its a good point you make, but on the other hand, why even BOTHER making, "the most amazing bag of potato chips if you KNOW you are not going to be able to afford any supermarket shelf space where ppl can get your product??!"

i can see where OP is coming from, i also would like to call out LG for making the most amazing phone (LG O Pro) and barely marketing it.... If & when they get around to it, Note 3 will be here and ppl will be like, "LG who?" Especially when you consider the last iteration of their competition to Samsung's Note series (LG Intuition) was almost (at least in USA) a joke... How they haven't felt the need to yell and yell LOUDLY that, "HEY WORLD- We got it right this time!!!" is baffling, you almost have to question the logic..

.(Well, if you're an obsessed, compulsive, phone addict you do, which i am - Normal ppl prolly could care less about the hows and whys of cell phone mfg marketing strategies...lol ) :-*

Clearly, you've never ordered what purports to be an OEM/Samsung charger from Amazon.
