How can I recover lost contact numbers from my device?

Why all the contact numbers in my device is lost?How should I recover it?

I am trying to clean my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 repeating contact list, where I select " Merge with google" in the Option Bar, many of the contacts photos I have previously set suddenly disappear. I later try to remove the google account to undo the merges. It ends up all my Contacts in Device are lost! leaving some whatsapp contacts. there's thousand of contacts inside.
Here's what I have done.
1. I Checked Google account, no contacts inside. I Signed in the google account to my Phone again, and scyned the contact, no good.
2. Checked " what to display" on contact and select all, no good.
3. I Checked some software to recover contacts, but it requires rooting, so i didn't go for that.
I didn't know what else I can do. Please tell me what actually happened? >,< thank you

Have you tried going into Settings, Accounts, Google and tap sync?

Go to Google Contacts. More. Restore contacts. (If it still sends you to the old site, you'll have to hit more and Restore contacts again.) Choose the period you want (probably 30 days) and restore them. Then sync the contacts in your phone.
