[HOW-TO] Download/Install Honeycomb to Nook Color (SD card)

Avoid Windows 7

Spent many hours trying to put marketplace on the Nook with Windows 7. Result: Almost there...almost there...almost... Aged 4 years and pulled out hair on one side of the head. Never worked. Pulled out a Windows XP laptop, worked in 2 minutes, literally.

If you can, avoid using Windows 7 to move Vending.apk and GoogleServicesFramework.apk, as it seems almost everything from Mac to Ubuntu or old XP works easily.

Good luck...literally, 2 minutes.

I just downloaded and flashed the Honeycomb rom on my 8gig sd card, it works in my nook. But now when I put the SD card into my laptop it say's that it needs to be formatted before it can be used. If I try and format it, it says that it can only format it to 117mb. Does anyone know what happened to my sd card? And will formatting it make the card only 117mb?

I had the same issue. I used the earlier release (win32diskimager-RELEASE-0.1) and the card read 8GB. That worked once, after that every image I wrote to any size card returned with 115MB available.

To restore to the correct size I used the HP Format Utility:

HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

Works fine, the Windows format utility does not, and will format to 115MB.

is the full version out yet?

can the full android OS be downloaded and installed onto the nook yet or is it still the preview? When can it be expected? Links anyone? anyone? bueller?

Kindle for Android 3.0

Has anyone else run into this issue?

I just upgraded my Kindle app on my Honeycombed Nook Color to 3.0. My Kindle app had been working flawlessly. Now, whenever I want to open a book, I get the window "Kindle for Android has stopped unexpectedly" and I have to force close. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Kindle for Android. I've tried sending a book to archive and redownloading it. I've tried downloading a new sample of a book. Same result. Is it some glitch, or could Amazon have done something to make the app unusable on a Nook Color?

Thanks for any input!

Talked with Barnes & Noble yesterday and they are anxious to get Android 3 for the Nook and will email all NC owners when the software becomes available. Hopefully, soon!

I got the same issue, you should use the correct CWM image file for your MicroSD card size

I used a 4GB microsd card, so I got the CWM_4gb image and everything went fine

Did you fix it?

I get failed to copy 'Vending.apk' to 'system/app/Vending.apk': Out of memory and failed to copy 'GoogleServicesFramework.apk' to 'system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk': Out of memory Errors. Any suggestions on how to resolve this? I have it installed on an 8 GB SD

I'm getting this Out of memory too error...I've allocated over 1GB of memory to the image. Have you resolved this and how?

Thanks,
inverted

I've gotten 3.0 to work on my Nook Color. However, when trying to proceed through step 4, something happens and I cannot access the Market. Can you give me more specific instructions for #4? For example, you say to download two more programs, but to where? And then you say to find adb.exe, but I can't find it anywhere on my computer or on my Nook (I don't know how to do file searching and command editing on the Nook), so I don't know what folder I should be in.

So, could you please give more detailed directions for #4 so that tech unsavvy people can update to a working 3.0?

Thanks for the directions.

Even more problems

Now I'm having the same difficulty as mentioned above...my 8GB card, after step #3 is only a 2MB card! I san reformat it back to 8GB, but then the data is gone, so when I reinstall, the card goes back to 2MB. So what do I do to take care of this? Already tried the HP program mentioned, but it doesn't run on Vista.

I NEED HELP!!! I'M GOING CRAAAAAAAAZY!

I am a complete noob to Android, Unix and modding devices. On my mac I was able to correctly identify my 8gb Scandisk micro sdhc and unmount it, but when I used the command to copy the nookhoneyO4.img to the card I received a "No file or directly" message.
Any ideas?

No file or directory message

I'm brand new to Linux, Android and modding devices. On my mac I was able to identify and unmount my 8gb Scandisk micro sdhc, but when I used the command to copy the nookhoneyO4.img to the card I received the message, "No file or directory." I have tried several ways of typing the file name and put it in different locations, with the same results.

Any ideas?

Thanks

instead of typing nookhoney04.img do this: dd if=(drag file here) and continue like normal after that

I installed HC on my nook the other day. I was running Froyo before hand. Froyo was a nice fit and worked as if it was supposed to be installed on the Nook in my opinion. HC looks pretty nice on the nook as well. It is slightly jittery and slow to react (I have not over clocked my nook yet). I also had to alter the LCD Density to 120 in order to get the icons to fit the screen. The time popup box still does not fit the screen when the nook is vertical.

All in all I am happy with HC so far. Cant wait to see if there is any further potential with the performance on the nook.

Still looking for some of the Xooms factory apk files though.

Nook Color Software Update 1.2.0

I just got Honeycomb and Marketplace setup running off the SD card. B&N just announced the new version of the Nook Software 1.2.0. Does anyone know if booting off the SD card will still work with the new version of the Nook Software?

Thanks.

The new Nook software has no effect on your ability to boot from the sdcard. I updated mine to 1.2 and I run CM7 from my sdcard.

Updated to the 1.2 then downloaded and installed HC on SD inserted into Nook and when booted the name Android appeared lower left with flashing minus sign.

Mac user having trouble

I have followed the instructions on this forum and gotten HC to work on my color nook (v 1.2). The fact that I have done this without bricking the nook or my mac is a testament to the great instructions you have provided. I am trying to get the marketplace and google framework to load. I connected to my mac via USB, but the drive does not show up in disk utility. When I take the microSD card out and connect it directly to my mac, I cannot find adb.exe. I have 1 question and 1 request. The question is that I used a 8 GB microSD card, and I know other users are able to only get ~2 GB of available space after installing HC, but my card shows only 1.14 GB available for use. Is this normal? The request is can someone have step by step directions (for someone not very familiar with terminal commands) showing how to install Google Market and Framework on the HC nook using a Mac. Thank you guys again for all the work and information you have made available.

Another question: is there a way to boot the native nook os while the HC microsd card is still in place (I want to run the nook OS without physically having to remove the microsd card)? Thanks.
