[How-to][NEW VERSION] Run Nookie Froyo off SD card

now just to figure out how to use adb

It probably sounds more complicated than it is. All you need to do is get to the 'Tools' directory from the Android SDK in a command prompt, and copy commands from the post. For these purposes, you can ignore everything else from the Android SDK. :)

damaged SD card

Installing Nookie Froyo custom Android 2.2 ROM to boot off of an SD card:

- the "damaged SD card" error that the developer's 0.5.9 image had is already fixed (0.5.9 fixed the browser force-closing on location requests, so you don't have to worry about that)

Hi!
I've already installed the "official" 0.5.9 image: is there any way to fix and remove the "damaged SD card" notification? Or should I reinstall the whole thing by using your customized image?
TIA and congrats for the good job!

Yeah, first download this file called vold. Place it in your adb directory (SDK 'tools' directory by default), and type the following from command line from that folder (enter after each line of course):

adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 /system
adb push vold /system/bin/vold
adb shell
#cd /system/bin
#chmod 6755 vold
# ls -l vold
adb reboot

That should make the damaged SD error go away.

You can now expand the SD partition too if you'd like (directions in nookie froyo tips thread).

- download the SDK (link in op)

- put the google apps system folder in the folder called 'Tools' in the SDK (link in op)

- open a command prompt (Windows) or Terminal (Mac), and navigate to the Tools folder (if you're in Windows, shift+right-click on that folder and choose 'open in command prompt').

- with your nook hooked up, type the commands in the op

- If you get a no device error, follow the link in the op to install driver files for adb to recognize your nook.

It might be because you already tried to do the wonder machine method. I'd re-burn the nookie froyo image and start over (probably won't take too long now that you've got the hang of it).

i think i know what the problem is do you put the brackets... and the two systems? adb push [here, enter the path to your SDK tools folder]\system system/ and before you plug the nookie exactly what file are you supposed to go to tools or system?

No brackets, everything else exactly the same.

how do get into the adb directory

Are you using Windows? If so, hold shift + right-click on the Tools folder (in the SDK folder) in Windows, and choose open in command prompt. That'll start you off right there. Then look at the path at the beginning off the command prompt - that's your path for the part in the brackets.

Curious as to why the Google Market can't be placed in the ROM itself. Side loading apps is a pain when Nooter has it built in and I can directly load apps that way.

Anyone else notice that it's very slow running from the SDCard? I'm running a 16gb class 10 card and there's serious lag opening anything.

I bought a class 10 16GB from Wintek, a brand I've never heard of and not only was the card unbearably slow -- so massive lag a points, it ended up corrupting itself.

So maybe you have a defective card, or the class is not accurate?

Anyways, I put in a 16 GB class 4 Kingston I have and not only is it faster than the supposed class 10 -- rarely any lag, I've not had any problems. I'm going to return the Wintek and pay the difference for a class 6 or higher Kingston, SanDisk, or Patriot, since none of these brands have ever caused me any problems.

i think im doing it right but, can you send me your email so i can send you a screen shot to see whats going on?

Please help a Noob out. I've been trying to set up my color nook all day and am having some issues.

I'm running Froyo off the SD card.

1) Can't get my N button to work as home. I've been able to remap the volume buttons, but can't find any info on the N button not working or remapping it.

2) I can't find most things I look for in the Adroid Market. (i.e. Zeam, XScope, etc.) Apps that I know are there, that I use on my Droid but for some reason don't show up. They don't show up in my downloads either, from when i downloaded them to my Droid or the NookColor yesterday before I restored factory default to try running Froyo off the SD card.

3) Do I need SetupWizard? When I tried the google app package, it makes my nook stuck at the setup screen. Even though I've already set up the wireless network. I got around it by renaming it WizardSetup.old, but if I try to rename it, I just get stuck again at the setup screen. (i.e. Please touch android to begin setup.)

I must admit, that I'm very new at rooting and have stumbled through a lot of problems, but I'm stumped at this.

You can post in this thread, and I or someone else will give you the best answers we can.

The 'n' button not working most definitely isn't normal. The setup wizard not running isn't a particularly encouraging sign either. I'd recommend starting fresh with the 0.5.9 image that's currently in the op.

The market fingerprint (that determines what apps you see) has been updated for that image too. If they still aren't showing after burning the new image to your SD, just clear the cache for the market (menu>settings>applications>all>market>clear cache from your homescreen), reboot, and check again.

I wound up figuring out my first problem, now I've run into another :) I got the google apps installed via adb, but now when I reboot I'm stuck at the "touch the android to begin" screen. I touch the android and nothing happens. The change language button at the bottom works, but that's it.

Any ideas?

EDIT : got past the adb troubles finally...

Having a bit of a problem with installing the google apps via ADB. Nookie Froyo boots fine, all seems well there. My NC is recognized and shows up as an ADB attached device, but when I try to mount /system as rw, I get this error :

error: protocol fault (no status)

Not sure what to do from here. Any ideas?
