[HOW-TO] Restore Nook Color to rooted stock

rooted stock auto nooter

I used the process in this thread and it returned my NOOK to stock just like it said - so thanks...

But when I tried to re-run autonooter, it boots into CWM. any suggestions on how to get this to work?

I am very new to this rooting thing...so any information would be helpful to get me to better understand what is going on.

does the very first process described in the first post "UPDATE 1/28: Try this method first", return the NC to rooted stock or un-rooted stock (ie. untouched factory) ?

the title of this thread vs. some of the comments in it are confusing :p

The first process restores it to un-rooted stock. Once you are back running 1.0.1 you can either autonooter it and run a customized 1.1.0 file or don't root it and it will update on it's own from 1.0.1 to 1.1.0. At this point, there hasn't been a root method for 1.1.0. The only way to it is so far is to root it before installing the customized 1.1.0.zip file that is available at the XDA forums.

I'm having trouble restoring back to stock.

I had installed Nookie to internal memory, and for some reason it quit booting. The device does not even appear to power on.

However if I run Nookie off of a SD card it works just fine.

I've tried the first set of steps, booting off a SD card into Clockwork and then flashing the zip. It appears to go OK but the nook still will not start back up

I booted into Nookie off my SD card and flash Clockwork recovery using Rom Manager. However, when I choose Reboot into Recovery it just reboots into Nookie off the SD again.

After that I tried the first method again in case flashing Clockwork some how helped, no go.

I would like to try the adb method, but the link for "boot" is not working

This thread:

[ADV][DEV][STOCK IMAGE]Nook 1.01 stock dd images - xda-developers

Ended up saving my bacon. I found it through other searches but it is pretty much the same instructions as the OP. But if you're a member of XDA its another location to get the system.img and boot.img

I have an unrooted NC with 1.1.0 on it that I want to root. From what I understand, I need to follow the instructions in this OP to get it back to 1.0.1 so I can root, correct?

Ok, assuming that is correct, I started following these instructions on my PC. I downloaded the CWM image and used Win32DiskImager to burn it to my 8GB SD card. I then downloaded the stock 1.0.1 restore file, and tried to copy it to my SD card, but it said I didn't have enough room.

So it looks like the CWM image is only 128MB, so that's how "big" it made my SD card. That makes sense. I then found in the forums that I need to run EASEUS to expand that partition on my SD card. I download EASEUS and follow the instructions laid out in the Nookie Tips thread. This is where I run into a roadblock.

EASEUS won't let me resize my SD card. When I click on my C: drive, the Resize button is enabled and I could change the size of my C: partition if I wanted to, but when I click on my F: drive (the SD card), I can see it's only 128MB, that there is 7+GB of unallocated space, but the Resize button is then disabled.

Anyone else run into this problem before? Any ideas how to debug or fix this?

Thanks.

Tim

[Edit] I followed timmyjoe42's advice below and just did CWR first, then popped out the SD card, formatted it on my PC, copied the restore zip to the SD card, then put it back into the NC and installed the restore zip from there (and then, on to the auto-nooter). Thanks timmyjoe42!

You pretty much nailed the process.
After you are booted into CWR mode, you can unmount the sd card, and format it back to it's original state and then add the zip to it, or you can have a 2nd card with the zip on it. Then put the sd card back in, mount it, and then install zip from sd card. (This is what I did, because I assume that I will need the CWR formatted card in the future. I also have a 3rd card with the autonooter on it, just in case.) Reboot. Then you will have to image the autonooter to the sd card, and insert. Then you will have to go back to CWR (after formatting your card again and imaging CWR to it) to install the pre-rooted 1.1.0_r2.zip (file from the XDA forums). This is why I have 3 sd cards going. I want to get a 4th card that allows me to boot to Froyo or Honeycomb as those versions develop.

Partition Layout

Hey everyone,

I'm attempting to restore to stock, and I guess I'm one of the crazy people the original article poster was talking about...

I attempted installing honeycomb to the raw internal memory (/dev/mmcblk0) which of course changed the partition layout. (this actually worked btw, I was able to boot honeycomb from the internal emmc). Now I want to restore to stock because I can't get aldiko to successfully load on honeycomb.

Since the partition layout is now completely messed up, I was wondering if someone could give me the original partition layout? A simple "fdisk -l" or "parted /dev/mmcblk0"
and then "p" over adb would give the correct layout. (Assuming you have one or the other of these utilities.

Anyway, thanks in advance to the kind person who does this...

i need some serious help....pulling my hair out here.

rooted first nook no problem yesterday. Second nook, I rooted 1.0.1, installed CWR via ROm mamager, flashed 1.1.0 rooted image. Nothing really worked...Rebooted nook 8 times, it went into CWR. I wanted the stock recovery back, so I restored it via these instructions: [RECOVERY][ZIP] Nook Color Restore to stock - xda-developers

So, not I can get back to 1.0.0 I can sideload 1.0.1, but now, I can not get autorooter to run off of the SD card. I can not get CWR to run either off the sdcard. Any help? I am 'burning' the .img files just like always (on a MAC, dd if=auto or cwr of=/dev/rdisk# bs=1m

It just always does the normal startup! It's like the bootloader is screwed up??

help!!

How did you copy Honeycomb over? If it was cp'd, pushed or dd'd, it shouldn't have changed the partitions, unless you did that manually. I'm not on linux and don't have either fdisk or parted, sorry. Try asking at xda if you haven't already.

So you'll insert any bootable SD and it always boots from emmc? Jeez. I'd say make sure your SD isn't damaged, try it with a couple if you haven't already. I've never heard of it just altogether not booting from SD anymore. I guess I'll refer you to ask at xda too lol. Let us know if you get it figured out.

Thanks

This method worked for me. I had messed something up as the Nook would boot to the main BN screen and keep rebooting itself. Thank you to the developers! You guys rock.

NC honeycomb

I have followed the instructions to add honeycomb to my NC. It's works! Problem..the device comes with 8gig,,,but after installing honeycomb 2 times,..i still only have 1gig of internal storage..is there a fix for that,,did i do something wrong? I was thinking about going back to stock and starting again?? Any suggestions?
Have a great day!

I take it that this is now incorrect? Once the machine updates to 1.1.0 we can then use Autonooter 3.0 to root it. Yes? Or am I missing something?
